Clever, Sony. We’ve seen the ‘TV’ icon in the Theme Builder for a while, but we had no idea that Play TV functionality is already in the firmware. So, we just need the hardware, which, according to David Reeves, is due out on the 10th of September.
“It was very difficult for some of the tech guys but we had to include it in the firmware upgrade, 2.41, but it’s done now,” he said, speaking to Eurogamer in an interview to be published soon. The hardware is expected to cost 99 Euro when it launches this Autumn.
Reeves also confirmed that you will be able to record live TV to the hard drive whilst playing a game, but there’s no word on picture-in-picture yet.

Now they just need to start broadcasting HD on freeview. It would be great if you could hook up Freesat to it as well as that already has a few HD channels.

€99 is about £75 right, and it receives HD broadcasting? I think this is going to be a huge deal. I have a freeview recorder but it’s not too reliable and always makes The Bill a bit jumpy when it records.
If this ships with decent stability, a slick EPG and a nice remote control I think it will be an outstanding addition to the PS3’s Media Hub credentials.
If it lets me watch The Bill smoothly I’d pay for it twice.

f this shipped as a Freesat device i would be first in the line but Freeview, meh. From what i have read Freeview won’t get HD till probably 2009/10 and even then it will restricted. They have to wait for the analogue signals to be turned off i believe so as to free up space for the HD signal. It stikes me as being typically British and a little half arsed.
Because freesat is a different sort of set up i think there isn’t as many restrictions on how many and the quality of the HD broadcast. And HD channels will be arriving on Freesat pretty much straight away i spose cause they don’t have to wait for the public signal space which is being used by analogue at the moment.
All of what i have mentioned is wrong but in my opinion Freeview is pointless and a bit pants compared to what i have read about Freesat.

There seems to be some confusion over whether this will have firmware-updateable HD tuners (allowing full HD when they decide on the Freeview HD standards), or whether it is just SD and will upscale?
I can’t decide if I want this or not, but as it’s relatively inexpensive I might get it anyway. The only problem is that Sony only furnished my PS3 with a 40gb disk, so I don’t suppose I’ll be recording that much anyway…

This is good, i will be purchasing one, im not too bothered about it having full HD, seeing the cast of coronation street or emerdale in full HD is not my idea of fun.

@gazo69 Imagine the football though, and certain films, HD would be a benifit but I agree, not immediately essential.
@humanfish If it went Freesat it would drive the base price up because it would need to ship with a satelite dish.
@everyone Wouldn’t it be cool if we got a sub section to the PSStore that allowed downloads of HD TV since PlayTV won’t immediately show us them in HD. They could be stupidly cheap for regular users or free for PlayTV owners? If that’s even possible.
I for one always felt like a second class citizen when the BBC put Robin Hood on in HD but I had to watch it on BBC1 knowing that it was better on the other, unobtainable channel. Like getting the wrestling taped by my neighbour when I was a kid because my dad wouldn’t buy Sky.
