Thanks to EdgeFusion on our forums who informed us that Firmware 2.42 is up and ready for download to your PS3s. Not sure what he’s doing up at 5 in the morning, but us Sony Ninjas do work right through the night.
Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations and a damned good looking chap to boot has officially confirmed the update, although there’s no changelog. “This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software,” he said. We did notice that Trophies load a bit quicker.
The recent BD-J homebrew stuff is still working, by the way, and we reckon it’s to prepare us for Life With PlayStation as we said on Monday, and the new Home beta which is rumoured to be landing on Thursday.

* Life with PlayStation seems to have been released. You can access it by going into folding@home where you’ll see a globe you can interact with. Zeroing in on a specific area will yield news from that locale.
* A Bluetooth mic fix has been added.
@work now so cant test Life, ne1 willing to give it a go. or 7:48am to early for some people

I read post over at N4g which claims this update streamlines the trophies in some way. So they load faster or something. I haven’t had a chance to test this though, but at 130mb I figure this update will do lots of behind the scenes stuff.

Ah well I was up that late because I got sucked into Final Fantasy XII, I quit back to the XMB and was notified of a system update.
Still no idea what it did, I doubt it’s for the Home beta. It seems sort of unlikely to me that Sony would develop and push out a firmware upgrade just for a beta. I’m sure if that were the case they would have told us (beta members) to expect a firmware update.
