For some reason, hackers have been trying to create some kind of ‘loader’ for PS3 games for some time. Whilst previous attempts either haven’t worked or just haven’t attracted the mass media we don’t know, but the video below seems to have hit the internet this weekend:
From what we can tell from the shitty TV, this is ‘StreetskaterFU’ who claims to be able to run some old PS3 games (Warhawk, Motorstorm, RFOM etc) from the PS3’s hard drive. Despite GameStation selling these games for about £15 for some reason this appears to be a valid use of their time.
We’re more concerned about the ‘noise‘ constantly throughout the video. Getting a little excited there, fella?

I was actually wondering what the “noise” was. Sounds a bit like a computer keyboard though. Bad camera work anyway.

Some people just like to prove that things can be done. Doesn’t matter if the solution costs more than doing it normally.
With PSN growing in popularity with games like Burnout moving over to it, people can’t even use the “its quicker and easier to have it on the hard drive” etc.

I think it’s an insult running a PS3 on a TV like that! Yea, as PS3 functionality expands and more games come out on the PSN, hacking and homebrew on the PS3 is becoming increasingly irrevelant on the PS3. I think it’s barely justified on the PSP as it is.

I know what you mean! I was just being a bit tongue-in-cheek. An impressive machine, such as the PS3 really deserves a TV with a HDMI connection if the user is to get the best experience out of their purchase.

Piracy is a thorny issue but personally I think games are generally fairly priced (unlike Blu Ray). £40 for 10 hours of original entertainment works out at about £4 an hour which is three times better value than DVD (£12 for two hours) and five times better than Blu Ray (£20 for 2 hours) so I say buy the games fair and square.
However, it is easier to have my PSP games on memory stick, I don’t have to carry all the UMDs around with me and they load quicker. I can understand why Sony don’t approve of this because it makes piracy so easy but, frankly, I don’t care if they don’t approve. I bought into a portable device, it becomes less portable when you have to cart bags full of UMDs around with you.
Also the “quicker and easier” argument for the PS3 is still a valid one. A few PSN releases, one of which is months after the disc release, do not invalidate that argument. Simply put it IS quicker and easier to have things on the HDD. That said I think the size limits of the HDD are too inhibitive for this to be fully useful but there is a use for it.

So long as you legally acquired the PSP games first, I don’t particularly mind - but I don’t see Sony thinking the same way.

I legally acquired the UMDs and the Sony Memory Sticks, they stung me twice in an effort to make their portable device a bit more portable!
I think Sony frowns on this but there is an argument that they also allow it. Without homebrew (including video codecs, flash games, organisers etc.)the PSP would be even more useless than it is now. Half the problem lies with the fact that the PSP doesn’t actually live up to it’s hype so people look for ways to improve it or just to have some fun with it. I’m not saying the pirates should be forgiven or condoned but where’s the harm in using my own software in a more portable and faster way or using some open source homebrew? At least it’s kept my PSP out of Oxfam for a while longer and in that time I’m still buying the occasional game for it, otherwise I’d have bought nothing past the first few discs.

I think that video is fake, have you seen when he clicks on the game, the room goes dark so you can’t see his PS3, during this time he takes the disc out then puts it back in?

wtf why bother. people will hack the ps3, just in time for the ps4. Piracy happens you will never beat it but the ps3 processor is well protected.don’t panic geeks will try but fail!! ;]

I really don’t like the way you have reported this story. It doesn’t matter if the games are cheap to buy, the fact is that (assuming its real) someone has achieved something through hard work and intelligence. Isn’t it a bit childish to go looking for this story and then publish it being all “what a waste of time”. Some people like to push themselves and experiment and see what they can do, have some respoect for that, or just don’t publish the story

this is not fake, but it isnt that great either.
“Yes it is real, yes I know how it has been done, No it is NOT convenient to use at all.
Finally it only works with a few games, it can easely be fixed by sony in any future firmware update, and of course it wont allow anyone to run any kind of unsigned code.”

Haven’t watched the vid, can’t be arsed but perhaps this was done on 2.41, and 2.42 put a stop to it, if not then 2.43 will (in Sony’s words) increase stability of some games ie. stop them being able to be copied to hdd

Definitely fake. Look at the Ps3 when he selects Warhawk. The game starts, then the room is dark and he takes the disc out of the Ps3, then he shows the disc to the camera, then puts it back into the Ps3. Then the game starts. SIMPLE. Also, Warhawk is in the XMB with the disc icon next to it. This proves that its fake.
