Despite us having the update list since Monday, the damned thing has been delayed. Probably until tomorrow.
“Unfortunately, a minor technical problem has caused a delay to today’s PLAYSTATION Store for PS3 release of new content. We will get the content uploaded for you as soon as is possible” said a spokesperson.

Right, I am a newb so by all means tell me to read the manual etc, but how can I get access to the American Store? Is there a setup option for it somewhere?

You need to set up a seperate user with a US address to access the US store. If you google for it there are guides that will walk you through the process.
