Thanks to everyone that emailed in over the weekend to let us know that the Official PlayStation Magazine had an interesting rumour in the latest issue: that Firmware 2.5 would allow us to take our own screenshots from within games. Sadly, we’re not likely to hear any more about this until the Official Blog comments on it, but let’s hope we hear something soon – the ability to take our own screengrabs would be a really nice feature.

The same magazine is also rumouring that we’ll see Sony’s ’super secret game’ at the Tokyo Game Show.  Put us down for something from Team Ico, please.  Ta.

  1. Hope they will upgrade the maximum sent size also.

When I now have a 8mp picture I want to share the stupid ps3 email program screems about size limit (without telling what the max is!!)

I can not even share a background picture downloaded from the store!! how lame is that..

    • very,very lame :)

  2. Whilst useful for a few people, I’d prefer the ability to organise photos/videos/games/friends better, cross game invites, and better standardised support for in game invites

Whilst I welcome any improvements to the FW, the ability to take a screen shot is way down my list of things Sony should be spending development time on, particularly if you can’t send it due to size restrictions mentioned above

    • Some more organisation options would be great – if I can store my videos in alphabetical order why can’t I do the same with my games? And if I sort my MP3s by artist why can’t I then store their albums in chronological order?

      Yes I am anal…

      • Agreed, sometimes I find some slightly annoying organisation options – I’d like to store my games in alphabetical order in their folders.

  3. I guess I should be grateful its a new feature as opposed to a firmware update with no changelist at all.

  4. Again, totally agree with CC, he’s like the superhero version of me. You never see us both in the same room.

Any feature additions are welcome though, I’m not ungrateful, I just would like some of the other stuff first.

Oh, and move the fecking system clock or battery charge indicator, how hard can that be?

    • It’s one of the hardest things known to mankind

  5. You know that OPM just get their rumours from the internet right? They’re not based on insider knowledge or anything. And the rumour about screengrabs in FW2.5 was posted online in many places a month ago, including on this site. So basically we’re just going round in circles.

    • Thought I’d heard it before somewhere…

  6. This would be a useful little tool for when crazy stuff like this happens!:

    and video:

Any idea if a recording tool might be along one day or would it be too much of a copyright hazard?

  7. I’ve no doubt i’ll be too busy actually playing and enjoying moments that are worth screenshot-ing to press the button that’d take ‘em.

  8. so any more on the rumour that home will also be coming with 2.5?

    • nope, lets make our own rumours, and see how many websites it’s appears on

      • I hear in Home you will be able to design a woman and print her off into reality like in that film Weird Science

  9. I’m with cc et al. There are more important things to be getting on with Sony.

But I am confused as to how this will actually work. Will you have to press the ps button at the time of the shot, then take it? Cos as far as I’m aware, most games go to the pause screen when you go to the XMB. And they can’t assign it to a button cos some games use all of them.

    Not that I care anyway…..

    • Could just be via the Blu-ray controller, or a Sixaxis in port 4 or something.

      • Hmmm. We’ll see.

I’m thinking you have to set it up via the XMB and then the next time you press the PS button it takes a photo. It’s easiest way I’ve thought of so far.

  10. I can honestly see it working via the use of a separate control pad or maybe a keyboard. Sometimes you want to grab a screenshot because a once-in-a-lifetime thing happens and having to re-map buttons is a bit long winded and you might miss out on the photo opportunity. Besides, Resistance already has this feature and you have to use a keyboard. All you do is press the print screen button.

Oi, sixth axis, make a bloddy LBP section to the website where you post all your favourite levels found! The search function is absolute pants in-game! :D

  11. Keyboard, print screen. Done.

And it’s a screenSHOT, not a screenGRAB, godammit!

  12. I think video would be a better feature, so that every game records the previous 10 seconds of play, so you can hit whatever button and it automatically saves those 10secs without interrupting the gameplay and re-live/share/upload them later

Whether its a great goal something really odd in GTA due to sometimes rather strange laws of physics or a great set piece in Warhawk

That would be worth talking about, but I’d still sooner have the stuff i mentioned previously

  13. Wasn’t there supposed to be YouTube support for streaming gameplay to a youtube video around the launch of LBP?

Has this feature been downgraded to screencaps then? Great. But I suppose that’s still a bloomin’ great thing! Can’t wait. No more awful photos taken of TVs. We’ll now be able to tell the different between PS3 screenshots and XBox screenshots!

  14. *awakes from cryogenic sleep*….

  15. Yeah, but don’t put a rocket in place of the woman. Bad things happen.

It’s true, I saw it on TV.

  16. I invisage:
You go into the XMB mid-game and select screenshot
Next time you press the PS button it takes the screenshot.
Next time you press it, normal behaviour resumes.

  17. Fgzakly!

    Swot I said! :)
