Xbox 360 Gets Blu-ray

Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 8:50 pm

Rumours

XBitLabs is reporting that Microsoft is about to offer 360 owners the chance to watch Blu-ray movies via an external player much like the HD-DVD one.  The device is rumoured to cost between $100 and $150, but there’s no set date or even anything remotely official at this stage.

Not necessarily, because if the price is correct, it nearly doubles the cost of the 360 Arcade bundle. And let’s not forget that we live in Britain, so it may end up that with this add-on, the 360 could be more expensive than the PS3 (especially when considering the PS3’s free online).

I doubt any games console owner wants a big bulky thing next to their games console. They should’ve just bought a high end pc if they ain’t bothered. Besides, it isn’t gonna play games now as well is it? It’ll probably scratch all the discs as well just like the dvd drive inside the 360. I love my ps3’s blu-ray drive, no disc has a scratch or a smudge on it *touches wood*…

    Actually,

It may be a very good thing for Sony, because then the general public will know that the PS3 has one built in, and with the 360 you have to pay extra… this helps compare like with like rather than the current my apple is better than your orange scenario we have at the moment

BUT… $100-$150 is around £60-£90 which, added to the cost of the “not quite the shittest” 360 is £230-£260 (or significantly less if the Sainsbury’s story is true) which is still cheaper than the PS3 and you get all sorts of exclusives and better multi-platform content (DLC), multi-platform games look better if you believe everyone on the internet (I don’t) and you can buy SWOS from the arcade.

So, we’re still getting the shitty end of the stick.

Also, it is highly unlikely it will play games from blu-ray due to the inadequate throughput of the (presumably usb) connection. I think, as cc_star said, this will be good for Sony as it makes them more comparable and the PS3 comes out on top of that comparison.

Oh yes, not for games, but why would they want it to play games when their DVD’s manage better performance, lighting and textures than our huge Blu Rays? That is if you believe the comparisons on all the gaming sites (I still don’t)

I hope they get a bad batch that explodes and causes a small American child to go blind in his left eye. Then he can sue Microsoft for more money than any of us have ever seen and buy himself a PS3. Problem solved.

Fear not fellow PStriplers, Sony would probably come in their little black Playstation logo emblazoned y-fronts if this turns out to be true.

I don’t think Sony will be too worried about it detracting from the value of PS3 for first time buyers… come on, who’d want to buy a hot steaming pile of fugly noisy crap with an extra fugly noisy box to fit on the side when you can have the gracefully beautiful PS3 for practically the same price.

I actually think it would be far more appealing to gamers who already own a 360 (especially the jealous 360 fanboys who hate everything blu - hehe!), and therefore tapping Sony’s blu-ray baby into another established 20 million user market. I bet Sony would jump at the chance, especially considering they will get royalties on every 360 BD sold. And not to mention the huge ‘one-up’ they would have over M$.

It could also have a negative effect on 360 - I think they have already pissed away the value of the 360 by reducing the price so much. The embarrassing capitulation of HD-DVD and now adopting a technology pioneered by the opposition - this would surely be suicide in the eyes of the public.

    Gamoc Says:

No, it wouldn’t suicide, because the general public DON’T CARE.

Or know! When the format war was going on, most people I spoke to didn’t understand the difference and had no interest in upgrading to an HD player at that time. You find an average Joe off the street and ask them to name one or two of the companies behind Blu-Ray and I bet you most won’t even know Sony.

If only Sony advertised their incredible technologies, just a little!
