Trophies: Are you collecting them?
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I really like the idea of trophies, and I try and get as many as I can on every game. However, at least on my friends list, I seem to be the only one who actually cares about them.
Currently, I have 244 trophies from nine games (and two of them are at 100%), and my friend with the next highest amount only has 54 from six games (and none of them are at 100%). Sure, I know there’s no way I’ll ever be able to get all trophies on all my games, but it’s not going to stop me trying. I wouldn’t go as far as buying a game just for the trophies, but if I was already thinking about getting a game, trophies might just convince me to take the plunge.
I love that sense of achievement when the “You have earned a trophy…” message appears on screen, because I know that not only I can see I’ve got the trophy, but my friends can as well. In the past, especially with single player games, your 100% save file which you no doubt spent hours on is made somewhat redundant by the fact that no-one else knows about it. But with trophies, your gaming accomplishments can be displayed for all to see.
The last couple of months have seen a definite increase in both the number of games getting trophy patches and announcements of upcoming games supporting the feature, and personally, I look forward to unlocking as many as I can. I just think if you’ve bought a game then you may as well get as much as you can out of it, and I consider it a wasted opportunity if you choose to ignore them.
But what do you guys think? Like me, are you constantly on the hunt for more trophies, or like everyone in my friends list, do you simply consider it a bonus if you happen to unlock one or two accidentally?

Ill add you tonight then Stef, I do enjoy trophy huntinmg and played through Drake’s Fortune twice for trophies but honestly I haven’t found a game I can play over and over yet which has trophies.
I wish COD4 and MGS4 were given a patch then i would be trophy hunting like Van Helsing looking for Dracula

I loved it when I got a Trophy for walking into the fifth landmine in a row on Warhawk, and another one for dropping cluster bombs on myself (don’t ask!)
I would like collecting them, but I can’t be bothered to play through some games again, SSHD, Uncharted etc…
For me I’m only going to commit to Trophies if they’re in there when I get the game, no re-playing patched games for me
I do like ‘em though, I’m just not as good as I was in the good old Sega days of gaming

Coming from a 360 to the PS3 I really felt the lack of Achievements, somehow games felt less rewarding.
Which is odd beacuse id been playing games happily for the preceding 18 years without thinking ‘what I need is a virtual pat on the back for doing this’
Anyway now I have trophies I find myself thinking things like ‘maybe i should replay Uncharted just to get the trophies’ or ‘I’ll wait to complete the story mode on GTA4 until after the trophy patch comes out’.
I was even chuffed when Linger in Shadows dumped 5 trophy messages on my screen simply for watching it!
I guess it just appeals to the compulsive collector in me

I’m a total trophy wife and I’m one of the few on my friends list who seem to care about them too. I have a number of friends who have somehow managed to stay at level 1 with 0 trophies.
I’d never buy a game just for trophies though and if I feel like it’d be a chore to obtain trophies (PAIN I’m looking at you) then I won’t bother. If I own the game and I feel like the trophy is within reach I’ll go for it though.

Totally agree there. I have games like PAIN and Eden which I enjoy playing but don’t bother trophy hunting on cos they are just too hard! On the other hand I have 100% on Uncharted and Burnout because they are achievable, challenging but fun to earn.
I can see the idea that smaller PSN games don’t reward you with trophies as readily as full blu-ray titles but compare “Get all the seeds in a garden” on Eden to “drive through your first auto repair” in burnout!
Linger in Shadows giving out 4 silvers is a joke, they should all be bronze if at all!
Still its added to my haul.

I like trophies. A lot.
I play games with the intention of getting as many as I can (usually – PAIN has proved an exception of sorts), and am really looking forward to getting a whole bunch of games in the next few weeks all with Trophy Support:
Bioshock
LittleBigPlanet
Call of Duty: World at War
Resistance 2
SOCOM (admittedly, this was mostly for the headset)
The trophies aren’t just for collectors though. Sometimes a trophy can brilliant simply for making you try and play the game differently, and maybe leading you to discover something you didn’t know you could do.
I’m yet to really take a stab at grabbing EVERY trophy in every game I own, but I certainly go for most of them, and I plan to finish most of them off in the future.

I know where you’re coming from with PAIN – I’m up to 56% and that’ll do me.

I’m on 6%, I have 2 bronzes. Some of them I’m on the way towards, but the effort of actually doing them is just too much for me to bare =/.
Add my PSN dude (Dafro1989), we’ll Wipeout some time.
One of the things that is screwing over my trophies per game ratio is Buzz. Play 50 singleplayer games, play 40 multiplayer games (this’ll happen over time…), Play 50 Sofa vs. Sofa games. It’s all things that are just so time consuming and for the most part, likely to not be that much fun.
Wipeout on the other hand – now that’s proving challenging and fun!

I also hunt for trophies in my games. Well, most of them, it depends on the game. In SSHD and Drakes, I still want to get 100%, but for WarHawk and Eden, I’m still in the bonus-mode. However, when I reach a certain point in those games, I go hunting.
My friends list isn’t long (20 friends), it seems only 3 of them cares about trophies. However, I hope this change with the new interface (fw v2.50) and/or Home.
However, there are some aspects of trophies I do not like. First of all: There are just to many. My friends won’t even start collection anything now, because I am way ahead. And since I got more games then they, I am sure to win.
And they are not well balanced between games. In Drake you get a trophy for almost nothing, but in Pain it takes ages.
However, I like trophies, I think they are a great addition, it made SSHD much more fun, I started playing Drake again. But the interface is not there yet, and I am waiting for Home.

I completely agree that the difficulty of trophies needs to be more balanced between games. One of the few games I think has got the difficulty spot on is SSHD, with most trophies being relatively easy to get, but with a few freakishly difficult ones to keep the obsessives (like myself) happy. I think this is yet to be emulated on any other game, because they are normally either all too hard or all too easy.

Wipeout trophies are great for this: bronzes can be obtained without even trying, but to get the golds will take serious dedication.

Uncharted isn’t too bad, it’s fairly easy to get most but the Crushing difficulty is genuinely nails.
Burnout I think is the easiest but I beleive they made the requirements easier when it became apparent that they would not be retro-active after they announced they would

I never cared about trophies/acheivements before they became available on the PS3. Just didn’t see the point, especially as some games had their own and didn’t much bother about them. I see the same thing on my friends list though, seem to be the only one with many. I had got a few awards playing Portal on the PC but hardly noticed them.
Then when the new Warhawk patch came out I started getting them by accident, love the daft names they have (the anti-camper trophy and “Are you aim botting?”). Been getting the same in Burnout and from the list for LBP will enjoy those as well.
I find though they are an addition to the experience for me though. I don’t go out of my way to find them. They happen when something cool happens and it makes that much more a groovy experience.
So before I thought it was something that only hardcore chased but now I see there are different levels to it and it really does enhance the games they are in.
However, some games don’t need them and may be better without altogether and shouldn’t be crowbarred in for the sake of it. I found the ingame awards of Uncharted unnecessary (it’s been since last Xmas since I played it) as the story is what drives the game and I just felt when I got one that it was a distraction and broke the immersion in the game. Similarly I found Assassin’s Creed did the same, only thing is that it already broke the immersion on its own so the awards were just filler for an empty game. Also why does Linger in Shadows need them?
Some games will be all the better for them though, Ratchet & Clank devs I can imagine having a riot with daft trophies, I think its a real shame they aren’t there. Still you know we’ll get them in the next installment!
So I’m turned around to liking them, not in the gotta have’em all way, just appreciating when they pop up at the right time!

i also like the idea: i have 198 trophies (or something like that), i am level 6, and i have 3 games at 100 % (burnout, uncharted , and linger in shadows, so 2 platinum).
i have more games like warhawk and pixeljunk, but i don’t play them very often.

I never understood why so many of my friends on XBX were obsessed with achievments. Since trophies were introduced I have become obsessed. I would have never played SSHD if it weren’t for trophies, and that’s going to be the case for many games I will play in the future.

Without meaning to, you’ve actually brought up a pretty good point which is that trophies are all relative. The more games you have, the higher your trophy count (and level) will be. It’s all very well to say “I have 250 trophies” but without knowing how many games that’s from, it may not be as good as it first sounds.

I find them irrelevant. But I think the implementation is great, i.e. I don’t feel like I’m missing anything by not trying to collect them.

1st ever post right here! Love what you do TSA, keep up the good work!
I am a complete Trophy Whore! I cannot get enough of them, I just wish I had more time to play. I am lvl 5 (amost 6) with 168, Uncharted @ 100% and Burnout @ 94% with platinum in the bag. It does make gaming completley more rewarding and as said also encourages you to try new ways to play, and in Warhawk’s case, do completely crazy sh*t!
The implementation so far has been IMO rather hit and miss though. Uncharted was a great game, played through 3 times to get 100% and loved it more each time but the Trophies were quite easy! Warhawk is a joke as you can cheat and get most yourself in a private room, WipEout and a couple on SSHD are incredibly hard etc.
All the games I want coming out have Trophy support. I just wish they would patch Star Wars Force Unleashed, I haven’t played it at all and picked it up on release day. I know this is partly to do with lack of Trophies and I am a massive Star Wars fan.

You can get the Easy Completion trophy simply by completing the game on Normal – you get both at the same time. Then you’d go through again, once on Hard, once on Crushing.
3 times for all trophies (I’m only missing the Hard and Crushing ones myself, but I just can’t force myself through the game again, fun as it is – I’m 3/4 of the way through hard, but I’ve no idea how I’ll drag myself through Crushing).

there are for all 4 difficulties, but if you beat it on hard you get the trophies for easy and normal. I got them all in 2 playthru’s

I don’t suppose anyone knows if the loosely rumoured Valkyria Chronicles trophy patch is ever going to be a reality?
I’ve 7 games on pre-order right now, and whilst I know definitely that Fallout 3 does not have trophies, VC has apparently not be denied as yet. I’m getting it either way (I need an RPG), but it’d be nice to have an RPG with them in.
Between now and the end of November, I will receive 7 games, more if I get Dead Space and/or Far Cry 2 (the latter is less likely, I have 2 shooters already, 2 more pre-ordered and am planning to get Killzone 2). My wallet will be empty, but my trophy cabinet will be full! =)
