Some Betas work well, they get the information the developers need to make the last minute tweaks to ensure that when the game is out, it runs as smoothly as possible. Some Betas are purely for marketing reasons, as the final disk is usually gold before us plebs get our hands on the pre-release version.
We suspect the Resistance 2 Beta falls under the former category, Insomniac are smashing people and surely want Resistance 2 to be as good as it possibly can be. And that’s why, according to rumours this morning, they’re opening up the current Beta for all. We could even see it in today’s PSN Store update.

What, really? So we could download it today and have a go, no applying for a code or anything like that? (Sorry for being a pleb no idea how the beta thing works!)

Well my official Beta stopped working when I was wanting to join cc_star last night!
Wonder if it has something to do with the fact that my Beta is the ‘Girl with Stick’ version, and not the newer Betas???

What is this “Girl with a Stick” version

The early closed beta version of Resistance 2

Had the beta anyway very good, surely this ‘beta’ then becomes a demo.

That would make more sense! I got the email about the Motorstorm 2 demo, I would have thought that should be called a beta after reading here that the graphics are much prettier on the proper beta.
I’m so confused, I’ve just started an engineering job and should know exactly what a beta is, ah well!

A demo can be made of old code, and therefore an older build of the game
Beta’s are traditionally for gathering fedback about bugs etc… but they now just appear to be a marketing tool to create hype around games

Ah okay, thanks! Suddenly the cloud has lifted. I think I might have a tea and do some work to celebrate…

I hope this rumour proves true, as I never got in to the ‘email Beta’. I’ve been looking forward to R2 for a while, so it’d be nice to give it a whirl before its release.
October 23rd, 2008 at 10:15 am
If it was possible then you could have my code, but it’s not so you can’t
My initial impressions are: It Sucks and badly!
I’m going to give one last go later, before deciding whether to recover almost 2 1/2 gigs of HDD space
If this is one of Sony’s big hopes as a system seller, then boy are we in trouble

Absolutely agree, I tried to give it another go last night, just so I wasn’t writing it off too early but it froze my system. Twice.
I hope that if it’s early code then they heavily publicise that fact, otherwise people will just think the game, when it gets released, will be crap.

I’ve given up. The beta is awful. My 2 lads are loving it though, don’t know what they have seen in it that I haven’t. Anyway they send their thanks to you cc for the code. Cheers mate now I can’t get on the PS3 and play anything!

The Coop mode is beast on this. The only complaint I have is they have these guys that take a shit pile of hits to kill, but they are basically retards. I would prefer twice as hard to kill and half the health. Other then that near perfect execution.
They need a way to mute players. I had to listen to some lady yapping on the phone for an hour talking gossip with her friend in Spanish.

You can mute the online conversations, I thinks it’s in settings, but not 100% sure, I did exactly the same, people on there were getting on my T*Ts, I had some yank trying to take over the game and shouting ” Give me ammo ” ( He certainly deserved a bullet ! )if only he read the instructions
bigwhiteyeti Says:

If you pause, there is a mute player function. I’m not sure if this is available in co-op, though.
October 23rd, 2008 at 2:46 pm
I’m in the beta. While I have to admit it froze once on me, but asides from that its one of the smoother betas I have ever been a part of. I’ve put a few hours in and never experienced any lag or slow down. The Co-op feature is a much welcomed addition. The battles play out like a MMO, with the different classes working together to use there various skills to take down super powerful Camera. The competitive portion is also very enjoyable.
The beta is great. If the beta is any indication of how smoothly the retail release will be, we are all in for a treat. I hope this rumor is true so more people can enjoy the game.

R2 beta is crap IMHO!!! I don’t think I’ll be getting this…
FarCry2, NFS Undercover, Fifa 09, here I come!!!
October 23rd, 2008 at 5:58 pm
FAR CRY 2 does look a bit special
October 23rd, 2008 at 6:06 pm
I think it’s a good start, but IT’S A BETA, PEOPLE! It isn’t intended to be the full product. Granted, there are glitch issues, and it doesn’t feel exactly like Resistance: FOM (please, Insomniac, make aim a toggle button again!), but despite some minor flaws, it is undoubtedly a more polished and better version of R1’s multiplayer component. I especially love the randomly generated co-op levels, making every runthrough unique.
I personally think that this Beta release is a demo of sorts for people who weren’t in the public or private betas.
