160GB Bundle Revealed

Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 1:41 pm

Rumours

Looks like HMV may have leaked the list of games in the 160 GB PS3 bundle.  Looks to us (if we squint a bit) like Ratchet and Clank Quest for Booty, The Last Guy, Super Stardust HD and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

A distinct lack of the PSN’s finest game (WipEout HD) but not to worry, this is still a wicked selection of games, catering to all tastes.  Good move, SCEE.

Not a bad selection although I would have thought something like PixelJunk Eden would be more of a show off than The Last Guy but I suppose there are licensing issues involved.

Wipeout HD instead of The Last Guy would have made that list outstanding. If they’d included Warhawk it would have been the greatest bundle ever.

Well squinted! Is 160GB enough? I’ve just taken delivery of a 320GB hard drive coz play tv has filled my 60gb up. I have also printed out colossalblue’s hard drive swapping instructions. That’s my evening sorted.

Good luck, don’t underestimate those evil silver screws!

I have a tip, it helps a lot, make sure you give the screw a lot of pressure whilst screwing, prevents it from slipping and f’ing up the screw.

    Is it really that bad?

    colossalblue Says:

    No, it’s worse.

You need the exact screwdriver or it’s almost impossible.

I’ve heard that as a last resort wire cutters (I think they mean tin snips) will bite into the sides of the screw and allow you to twist it off like you would a bolt with pliers but this chews up the screw. Sony replace them though, slowly.

I was lucky enough to just have enough of the screw left to get out, That screw never went back in though, wasn’t taking that risk.

It went quite well really, thanks! I’d read so much about the evil screws I was well prepared for them! They weren’t too bad for me. I think it does help to apply a lot of pressure when you start unscrewing them. The biggest problem I had was getting an external hard drive large enough and formatted to FAT32. I think 320GB should do me until the PS4…

These are in really short supply apparently, at that big GAME retailer whose name escapes me at the moment, they have been told not really mention it in case it detracts from 80gig sales, and the lack of availability of 160gig may mean no sale at all, so most of the push in the UK will still be on the 80gig

Seem daft, if you’ve got them to sell then sell’em.

    I WANT IT!
But actually, I already have all of those (except the Last Guy) and I have an original 60GB with backwards compatibility so I’ll just buy a new harddrive. I really need one too!
And that’s WITHOUT Playtv or the downladable film service!

If all fails when swapping your hard drive and you can’t get the thing out of the cage, then phone sony for a replacement, but in the mean time you can still use your new drive without the cage. Carefully put the drive in the hole and with your little finger or a pen push the back of it so the connectors meet up. The drive will have a secure enough connection to work fine as long as you don’t move the PS3 around. I did this for a couple of months and worked great till I forgot about it while cleaning the PS3 and it came unconnected. I then phoned Sony who sent the cage out to me in 2 weeks.

I can’t just be me, but I didn’t have any trouble with the screws at all, yes they were tight, but most electronics gear is done up well.

I moved from the stock 60 to a nice 250, you can however get 500gb units now (I’ve checked the size and it is a 2.5inch 9.5mm jobbie), still a little pricey at over £100 delivered, but I might treat myself for Christmas.

That said, ALWAYS use the correct screwdiver.

A little tip though is if you can afford if, get a USB external HDD, I’ve got a 640gig (WD Mybook, all nice black and shiney) sitting next to my PS3, it goes well as the indicator light is blue.

It’s great for backups and for moving PlayTV recordings off of the main HDD.

    Metalgsean Says:

Is that a Western Digital mybook essential 640gig external USB HDD? I just wanna make sure because i just found a £50 500gb one on amazon amd im in dire need of some space lol. Do you have to format or convert anything 1st?

    Rating: 0.0/5 (0 votes cast)

    colossalblue Says:

It has to be formatted as FAT32 but you can do that with your PC.

    Rating: 0.0/5 (0 votes cast)

    Demibeard Says:

Yes, it is the essential, one I was going to get a 1TB version, but ran out of money.

The PS3 will only read and write to FAT32 external drives and memory cards (It might support FAT16 for the really small memory cards)

I think that all external HDDs come preformatted to FAT32, but if not, Windows doesn’t support such huge FAT32 partitions for formatting.

There is however, a format tool on the WD site, I think Freecom do one too, I’m guessing all the major manufacturers do. It will enable you to format partitions greater than 200GB in FAT32.
