Codemasters have just announced that Colin McRae: DiRT 2 is now in development at Codemasters Studios for the PS3 (and other consoles) for release in 2009. The press release says that the game will be headlined by Colin McRae, honouring the life of the rally legend. Colin McRae, who consulted on the series for over ten years, tragically died in a helicopter accident in September 2007. The decision to continue the famous series bearing his name was made jointly between the McRae family and Codemasters.
“Colin McRae was all about the speed, the excitement and the entertainment of rally driving. Even when we first worked with him over ten years ago, he captured a freedom and a spirit that enthralled rally fans.” said Gavin Raeburn, senior executive producer at Codemasters Studios. “Later his showmanship shone through in events such as the X-games, the Dakar Rally and the Race of Champions. He could do things with a car that no one else would and that’s where we’re taking the series with new events at the extreme edge of rally and autosport. It will be a great tribute to an incredible champion.”
DiRT 2 will be powered by the third generation of the EGO Engine and will benefit from tuned-up car-handling physics system and new damage engine effects. It will also showcase a new level of visual fidelity, with cars and tracks twice as detailed as those seen in Race Driver: GRID. DiRT 2’s garage will house a best-in-class collection of officially licensed rally cars and off-road vehicles covering seven vehicle classes. The opening drive is the Group N Subaru; essentially making the ultimate car from the original game the starting point in the sequel and the rides just get even more impressive.

They’re marked as ‘target renders’.

So CG rather than anything done with the game engine then?
Still, Killzone 2 seems to have exceeded its CG sample stuff so hopefully DiRT will get close to those screens. Which are stunning.

If they get close to these pics this will look amazing.

Glad to see they kept the Colin McRae name in there. Would have been a shame to remove it.

Colin McRae is now a name that alot of people, especially younger people, will associate with video games, never mind the fact that the great man was a world champion rally driver.

They better make it a good game and not another re-release with a different name , making a quick buck from a dead guy is not on so they better justify it with lots of brilliant changes ! X(

It NEEDS multiplayer. I had the first Dirt, and it was brilliant. Except the online was a pile of crap. I wanted to race around a circuit withother cars, or ghosts at least. All you had was a bar in the top right telling you where other players were. I want to be able to SEE other people. Also, maybe the ability to chat in the in-game lobby too.

Pretty stupid now if they release a game without a decent online multiplayer. A no brainer in my eyes.

This is a great sign for the next F1 game! And no doubt Grid 2 will follow

I just hope they are trying to represent Colin McRae and his spirit and not just making money out of his name.
Personally I though Dirt was a bit of a let down and I have loved previous Colin games. High hopes for this one.
