Want Sky but don’t want a dish?
Sky may soon be coming to a PS3 near you, hot on the heels of full BBC iPlayer & Hulu compatibility comes reports that Sky see the PS3 as an “interesting opportunity”
TechRadar have been speaking to Sky’s Director of OnDemand, Griff Parry
“Currently consoles like the PlayStation 3 won’t play the Sky Player because of the way we protect the content [through Microsoft's Silverlight]; so the PS3 wouldn’t be able to cope with the DRM,” said Parry as he showed off the new streaming live channels on Sky Player.
“However, I think games consoles are an interesting opportunity and it is something that we are exploring.
“We have a relationship with PlayStation because we launched the PSP service (GoView) so I look at consoles, and there are a lot of them, and they are obviously connected to televisions and the internet,” concludes Parry.
This news comes at the same time that the BBC announces it is willing to open up iPlayer technology to other broadcasters, so hopefully we’ll end up with one application which does everything rather than lots of little ones, only time will tell.

I remember hearing early this year that Sony & Sky were working together so that the PS3 could be used as a Sky+ box which would launch early 2009.
Saying that, it was very early in the year, and since then GoView and PlayTV have both been released, so when you think that one is a Freeview version of Sky+ and the other was worked on with Sky, there’s every possibility that this was never actually planned.

This is the way things should be going, the PS3 was sold as an ‘entertainment hub’ (well, it was when i got mine!). Hopefully once Home is out of the way with other features will start to be added to the PS3. It’s all good.

For the love of god, stick it in the XMB.
Get iPlayer, Sky Player, 4OD and on demand in there as little apps. Charge the standard price for the movies, stick some adds in there and you’re away!

nice idea, shame theres too much legal jibber jabber to be done b4 the release of the ps4. im betting ( and honestly a little worried) the ps4 will get everything that we are dreaming the ps3 will get and right now the ps3 will just be a rumour mill of unfulfilled promises and idealism.
Lets just hope im terribly wrong with my feelings.

Woohoo ! It’s strange ( but nice ) that this is all happening now , I remember when basically nothing would play video content online !
Since day one Ive been using the ps3 browser to do everything , and it’s been like watchin watching my favourite child grow up into a respectable young man ! ( one with bad punctuality !! lol ) and I am begining to lose my fanboy issues and just enjoy what my ps3 can do regardless of my mates criticisms !
I heart ps3 !!!!!! X x

Hope this is true. More apps the better. Just got PlayTV yesterday so this will add to more content on my PS3

It will be good if and when they get this all down to one app that can sit on the XMB.
Or if they let you watch live football on Sky Sports for free.

Great news actually, but probably not for me :s
Just like PlayTV… I can’t even get that here in The Netherlands and if I could, I will only be able to receive 4 channels (3 public + 1 local), because all the rest of the signals are scrambled and aren’t open for Sony.
Some rules are just a way to stop progress.
