Edge magazine have published their awards for the year and LittleBigPlanet has scooped the two big ones. Dead Space also got a thoroughly deserved (or so cc_star keeps telling me) Best Audio Design award. Aside from the obligatory and, I have to say, slightly confusing inclusion of GTA IV in the Audio Design and Best Game categories and the complete absence of Metal Gear Solid 4 there isn’t really much that can be argued with.
But I’ll give it a bash anyway:
The Xbox 360 being named as best hardware is an absolute indefensible joke. It actually makes me a bit angry. Don’t get me wrong, if I had a spare couple of hundred quid I’d buy one, I’d like the chance to play the Gears of War series and Fable II as well as some of the XBLA games. I think it’s a decent (if ugly, noisy and cheap) games machine.
However, under no reasonable definition of the word could it be described as the “Best” Hardware of 2008 (which is a stupid category anyway, 2008’s hardware was the PSP3000 and the DSi). It absolutely is not better than the Playstation 3 in terms of specifications or performance. I know there will probably be fanboys who will disagree with me. They are wrong. The argument is over people, learn to live with the facts: the PS3 is a technologically superior machine that hasn’t (yet) bettered the 360’s ability to ship enjoyable, high quality software. And the 360 breaks if you breath near it. And they reckon MS did know about the disk scratching and chose not be arsed fixing it.
So, fair enough, the 360 would beat the PS3 on hardware or software sales, certainly on popularity. Unfortunately the Wii is a contender for this stupid category too and if we’re measuring on sales or popularity then I’m afraid it pushes your 360 into a puddle and pisses on its shoes.
Seriously, it’s a stupid category and it’s an even more stupid result.
I won’t argue with the rest though. Even though I think Edge is a stupid, biased, crappy publication that I never seem to agree with any more. Maybe I’m wrong, I’m sure some of you will tell me if I am. I’m not though.
Here’s the list, gleaned from *shudder* Neogaf
Best Innovation:
Best Visual Design:
Best Audio Design:
Best hardware:
Best Publisher:
Best Online Experience:
Best Developer:
So there you go, I stayed up late to write this and now I’m too annoyed to sleep. You might not like anything that I write but at least try to appreciate the effort.

I suppose staying awake to see if I get any comments is a bit futile at this time of the night isn’t it?
Fair enough, I’ll go to bed and try not to let my head explode.

Now you know how I feel when I was posting up the VGA results. I’ve been awake all day. And it’s already night time again.

Can’t sleep, bogged down with flu and I’ve got to spend tomorrow (or today or whatever) training a class on something I don’t give two shits about.
Instead of doing something about it I’m rattling around here and will likely go play some WoW instead.
Thats futile.

I have to completely agree with you on the hardware issue. The word hardware is specifically addressed to…you know…the machine. NOT the software. The PS3 has so much more going for it right out of the box in terms of hardware.
Another note: good job LBP. Looks like it got some recognition that it deserved. I like the innovation part. Hehe.

You should have stayed up, because I was waiting for you to finish the post so I could comment on it.
Best Audio Design: Dead Space is the most deserved award I’ve ever heard of.
If you’ve got surround sound, wear pampers whilst playing this game. And If you haven’t got surround sound you’re missing out on a key next-gen component, it is practically as important as a good HD TV
I can pick fault with all the other awards, but I’m afraid of the backlash.
Actually no I’m not fuck ‘em!
Best game: LBP – this is great news, someone tries to do something different, it just about works as expected and this is a well deserved award.
Best innovation: LBP, it certainly is innovative good see it being recognised for it
2nd best innovation: NXE – really? you don’t need a slow bloated, buggy boring 3d world, just enhance the amazing communication facilities you already have with some avatars, and enhanced chat room type facilities. other than that it’s vertical version of the XMB
3rd best innovation: Left4Dead, whilst maybe fun or even good/great I wouldn’t exactly call it ‘innovative’
Best Visual design: LBP – and the awards just keep on coming (hopefully that will convince some Americans to buy it.)
2nd best visual design: SF:IV – a game coming out next feb/mar has this years 2nd best visual design, c’mon Edge you’re losing it now!
Best hardware: top 3 positions are hardware which has been out for a couple of years? WTF? Like Cb says there is only the DSi and PSP 3000 to choose from
Best developer: I’d agree with those 3, but I’d give a special mention to EA’s Redwood Studios, for the fantastically produced (original IP) Dead Space

“2nd best visual design: SF:IV – a game coming out next feb/mar has this years 2nd best visual design, c’mon Edge you’re losing it now!”
that’s exactly what I thought when I read the list. If their going to give out awards for games that haven’t even been released yet then they might as well give these awards out
Best Online Experience:
Killzone 2
Best Visual Design:
GT 5
Best game:
Resident Evil 5
bah…

I really don’t like Edge any more, they seem more and more biased and out of touch with the real world with each issue.

Hardware is bullshit, like cb there a re a few games on the 360 which turn my head now and then. I don’t have the cash or time to justify owning both though.
But whenever I’m tempted to turn to the dark side I just go read ANY 360 related thread about anything (360 price drop, new film available, something about acheivements). You are guaranteed to find at least one post from someone saying their 360 is currently borked.
And then there is the noise which brings up the next point. Has 2008 been so dull that after LBP the only innovation we have is NXE? I can’t say I’ve seen it but what I’ve read is that they’ve redesigned the menus – like the PS3, the crappy avatars – like the Wii and now feature direct to HDD installs of full games that *may* increase performance IF you have a big enough drive (or one at all).
But speed isn’t the main reason people use it, most 360ers use it to cut out the bleeding noise of the thing which is the biggest complaint of the hardware after the RRoDs.
So another nail for hardware and the NXE is an innovation because it tries to paper over the shitty design of the thing.
I always thought the design was way to close to the Dell systems of a few years ago as well:
http://news.cnet.com/i/bto/20080502/xbox_360_black.jpg
http://www.itrecycled.com/shop/image.php?productid=3
Bit of a rant, basically to sum up, the 360 is good for the money and the online play but it hardly deserves awards compared to what else is on the market. When Sony fuck up (and they often do) I sometimes wonder if I should sell up and move on but then I remember all of the above and then go play LBP.

A new list of webistes/sources which i no longer trust:
Edge
Gametrailers
Gamespot
videogamer
+ any others i come across that tote “graphical comparisons” or “360 vs PS3″ Game comparisons
In my opinion, the only category that the 360 should win is “The Cheapest, Tackiest, Most likely to break Console”. Nice to see that LBP and MM got every award they deserved. How did Microsoft Game studios get best publisher? I hate EA but i still think they probably should have been first.
The only problem with this list is that fanboys will be blind to everything that our beloved LBP won and only see that the 360 won best hardware.
I really wish I could write an article for TSA on graphical/Game comparisons.

Gametrailers are sort of okay…still pissed me off when they posted that GRID 360vPS3 graphical comparison video that only showed PS3 footage. Everyone thought that the 360 had managed to grow a triangle button.

Edge are alright, the award winners aren’t so strange if you read their justification. Here’s the blurb on the Best Hardware winner:
“Though Xbox 360s hardware issues still nag at Microsoft like a canker, few would doubt its other achievements over the last 12 months. A series of price cuts have the placed the basic model as the cheapest console on the market by some margin, while estimates suggest that Xbox 360 sells the most software in the current generation, with an attach rate of 8.1 games per machine, compared to PS3 at 5.3 and Wii at 5.5. As such, Xbox 360 is a compelling product for both consumers and publishers, all at a time when Microsoft has invested so much in lending it broader appeal with a new dashboard. Xbox Live, meanwhile, is still unchallenged as the best console online gaming service in the world, and Video Marketplace has now reached a size and scope that rivals dedicated online media providers. Microsoft’s continuing development has been intelligent and extensive, and every user has profited from that.”
So basically they mean best console rather than best hardware. In the text for PS3 being runner-up they say that the numerous updates have helped, but Sony are always playing catch up with MS rather providing any vision of their own. They say the Trophy system betrays “a distinct lack of flair”, and launches of games like LBP and SOCOM have been beset by PSN problems. I can’t really argue with any of that.

They should have had the category as “Best all round console”, rather than “Best hardware”, as they are giving the 360 the wrong award.
It wouldn’t be odd to have that either. No one would mind to see PS3 as best hardware and then have the 360 as the best all round console, as it would be fair.

Should be more like:
“Best hardware:
1) PS3
2) Wii
3) X360″

Good point, iPhone is a rising gaming platform.
Edge is a UK magazine though so the inclusion of a game that their readers can’t get in the shops is a bit silly.

I know EDGE is a UK mag but it’s about ‘game culture’. I don’t think they should restrict themselves to just UK stuff BUT I also agree it’s aggravating not being able to play the games that they can.

BS. PS3 has plenty of good exclusive software. Many of which the Xbox 360 has not bettered.

BS *in your opinion* factually I am accurate though. The PS3 hasn’t bettered the Xbox’s ability to *ship* any sort of software.
