PS3 vs 360 In 2009 [99]

Tradition has it that around this time of year we start looking at the incoming year’s digit and reflect on what it might have in store for us. I’ll do it a little differently though, instead of just listing the known highlights of 2009 I will list only the exclusive Sony projects and judge them all according to a scale going from good, to bad, to just plain ugly. The measuring units are a representation of my opinion whether the given project is a good idea for Sony as a whole or not. A simple yay, nay or off with his head regimen if you will.

God of War 3:  Good.

Sure, the gameplay video shown was less than impressive, but judging from the previous games, which were two of the finest action games ever made, I think we can all safely say that greenlighting a sequel to the previous masterpieces was a good idea. Though, while the previous God of War games have been decent sellers they, nevertheless, never set the charts on fire. I expect this title to sell moderately well, about 2 million units, but it won’t be a system seller. Just a much needed vitamin shot into the PS3’s gaming library for 2009.

Uncharted 2: Good.

Brilliant idea! The only thing the original Uncharted was missing was more sales, lets hope the sequel doubles the sales of its predecessor, now on to the next.

Infamous: Good.

Am I a monster for admitting that I am most looking forward to Prototype out of the two? It just, you know, looks like so much more fun. But looks can be deceiving and my misplaced affections aside I am in no doubt. Infamous will be worth the very long wait we had to endure. Unlike Insomniac, which has just stopped trying it seems, Sony has a keeper on their hand with the developer Sucker Punch. Too early for me to judge how big of a success this game will be, but I think we can at least expect God of War 3 type numbers when all is said and done. Another million seller for Sony, coming up!

Heavy Rain: Bad.

Ever played Fahrenheit, or, God forbid, Indigo Prophecy (which the gimped Yankee version was called) that had all the nudey bits removed because tits are a source of all evil and terrorism? No, not many did. I did though, I played the dickens out of that game. Heavy Rain is the quasi spiritual successor to that game.

Now, a Sony exec has been quoted as saying of this game that he hopes it will have casual appeal. Well, I’ll make a bold prediction here, granted I have not seen much of Heavy Rain, but I reckon I have seen enough. Having played trough Quantic Dream’s previous effort I think I can safely say that this title will blow whale gibblets when time comes to bring in the muffin.  Fahrenheit was, for lack of a better description, a glorified DDR clone with a pretty nifty semi-interactive adventure interface unloaded on top of it. It seems to me that Heavy Rain is all that plus a pretty creepy trip to the uncanny valley.

I applaud Sony, as one of the few remaining developer/publishers still doing it, to embrace and encourage new thinking and innovative game projects and studios. But, old chap, Heavy Rain has Heavenly Sword written all over it I am afraid; do not expect it to be a system seller. I’ll be picking it up regardless though.

Killzone 2: Good

Ah, you knew it was coming. Ok, so what we have here is an FPS.  It is dark, it is gritty, it has macho grunts in armour with guns, it has long lines of ugly opponents to shoot in the face repeatedly in an exercise in monotony.  Why, in today’s gaming world that positively sounds like the golden recipe for success, or some kind of get rich quick scheme that actually works. At least I expect that if such a game was released on the competitor’s system it would sell 5 million copies, easy.

But see, the PS3 is not the competitor’s system, and somehow deep inside me there is a feeling. A feeling that Killzone 2, as sure a bet as it is, nevertheless will somehow fail to bring in the number of units that one might expect. Intuition or wishful thinking? I don’t know, we’ll see, for know I am willing to consent to popular opinion and deem this a ‘good‘.

MAG: Ugly.

What do you call 128 closet case NRA chimps running around and playing shoot the terrorist? Well, you get FAG apparently. Sony’s railroad spike to the head, closing surprise at the end of their train wreck of a keynote conference back in E3 of 2008.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what I think of Sony greenlighting this stain on their lineup. Do we really need another online shooter? Really? Think hard now, actually, honestly, really? Can’t all the toddler Yank puffs who shoot away their sexual frustrations in online macho head whacks just do it in the other dozen or so titles designed for exactly that? Hmmmm? In say, Killzone 2, Resistance 2 or maybe even SOCOM? Or perhaps COD5 Or Team Fortress 2? Need I go on?

The Agengy (and that comic book MMO): Ugly.

Look, I am sure MMO’s are big business and all, luring poor OCD saps into monthly payment bondage like so many heroin dealers making future clients of neighbourhood school kids. But SOE, that independent MMO specific gaming arm of Sony, has a pretty terrible track record as a pusher.

They were doing semi-decently until Blizzard came along with World of Warcraft and started running circles around the entire industry. Now all they can do is fight over the left over scraps with the other poor MMO muts. Their insunk eyes and scrawny half dead looking bodies show they are not doing too well at that either.

I am going to go ahead and say it, the people over at SOE are not talented people, The Agency and that #ugh# comic book MMO both look terrible. All I see upon viewing videos demonstrating each games awkwardness is two bottomless holes in the ground each with a sign sticking out beside them instructing Sony to shovel development money into them. I’ve said it before, maybe MMO’s can be made to work on consoles, who knows, but I am sure of one thing, SOE will not be the ones to make it happen.

Here is an idea, those 2000 necks being prepped to be parted from the Sony body in a move to combat massive losses?  How about throwing the entire SOE unit into that meat grinder for good measure? That is right, just fire the whole gang. You want guaranteed MMO success for the PS3? I suggest taking that money being funneled into the dark pit of SOE and using it to purchase a successfull MMO studio in Korea, a really well known one with a good track record.

Then set that studio to develop a PS3 MMO project aimed at the Korean market. That would all but guarantee you a monopoly on console MMO’s in two of the world’s biggest, most lucrative MMO markets, China and Korea. All those Korean gamers who want nothing to do with your console will suddenly have a reason to pick one up and dump monthly subscriptions into your coffers as they slowly exhaust themselves to death as you tend to their OCD’s.

Sure enough you not only have opened up a much needed giant revenue stream into your gaming division but you can also put a fourth feather in your hat. Congrats old boy, you are now the only console manufacturer to be out and have moderate success in 4 totally different regions at the same time.

Oh, and did I forget to mention you should have done all this about two years ago? Yeah, sorry about that, just slipped my mind.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII: Ugly.

First: Final Fantasy XII, or at least the exclusivity of it.  Oh, Sony, years from now you will be sitting in a dimly lit pub rudely asking for another pint as you spill your current one while you harass the other pub goers with stories about the one that got away. How you scared away this delicious little treat into suggesting you start seeing other people I will never know, but you did it all the same old boy.

And Versus?  What do we know about this Final-Fantasy-Light title? It has a guy sitting on a chair and Square Enix thinking this is still 1996 were pre-rendered CGI is all the rage, this game has plenty of that. So…… yeah. I’ll discuss this title in the 2010 incarnation of this article.

White Knight Chronicles: Good.

This game looked so incredible and fluid about 3 years ago when we first saw that video of it. Since then, though, my excitement for the game has sort of run out of steam. The game is already out in Japan, there it certainly didn’t impress Famitsu much, what with the low scores and all, and the newest videos don’t look nearly as impressive as they did all those many years ago. It seems maybe the fluidity and innovation of the combat system fell somewhat short of the early demonstrations as well.

But heck, what else does this game have to go up against? Not too many JRPG’s coming out lately, are there? Square Enix certainly doesn’t seem to be in any rush to change that either. So, the game, as good as promised or not, will hit a dry spot, and we can all be thankful for that I suppose. I don’t think it will light up the charts either, it will likely debut in a low spot on the top ten best selling list only to quickly disappear from it never to be seen again a few weeks later.

Next Team ICO Project: Good.

We know naught of this game but confirmation of its existence and a single mysterious piece of art. A hole with a chain coming out of it. Not much to go on, granted, but Fumito Ueda has never failed to bedazzle us before so why should we doubt him now like a bunch of bratty unappreciative sods?

A Sony exec was quoted as saying of Ueda-san that he and his team are like the Olympics, returning once every four years. The four year passing since the release of Shadow of Colossus is scheduled to be up in late 2009. So, I figure it is about time we find out more about this project and perhaps dare hope to see it released before year end.  Don’t expect huge sales though, I think I bought half of all the copies ICO sold over here and Shadow of Colossus never broke a million, if my memory serves me right.

Do I want it regardless? Oh, you shouldn’t even need to ask.

  1. Looks to be a good year for the Black Beauty.

  2. Great! MAG still intrigues me, though. Mostly because of the massive maps it’s got to have, and it kinda reminds me of Battlefield 2/2142, which I never played.

  3. I like the idea of MAG.
Yes there are a lot of shooters around, but do any other shooters have 256 players in one match?!
It’s going to be like Warhawk TIMES 1000!! (well 6, but thats a lot!)
I know that there will be ridiculous problems at launch with the servers as there is with everything else. And I see a delay for it. But I still look forward to it!
I’m also REALLY looking forward to Heavy Rain. I didn’t play Fahrenheit. But I LOVE cinematic games with deep stories and so this should be a wet dream for me!
Agency and Comicbook thing, yeah. I completely agree with you. They won’t be marketed and so noone will buy them and the few that do will be turned off by the incredibly low numbers.
    Uncharted 2 = ZOMG!
GoW III = OMG! (ZOMG if it can start to look better, the trailer was a complete disappointment)
Infamous = Im not excited, but Ill buy it and Im sure I’ll love it.
Versus XIII = I am looking forward to! It’s darker. I like Dark!
    White Knight = No interest
Killzone 2 = This is going to dominate my spring (along with Resident Evil)
Next ICO = Didn’t play ICO, did half of SoC and will be borrowing it to plat all of but from what I hear of them, I look forward to what they will release! And if Sony market it like they did SoC then it should sell well!
But by far (along with Uncharted 2) my most anticipated release of this year is Ratchet and Clank. I Cannot WAIT! The comment about insomniac stopping trying!? Im temped to give you 1 star just because of it! (i’ve balanced out at 3). They’ve never made a bad game and I can’t wait to see what they do with R&C now with all the new technology they used to make R2. They say each game they make is a step up from the last and R2 was such a MASSIVE step techwise from R1 and R&C that I can’t even start to imagine what they’ll do this time round!
    OoooH!

    • I feel Resistance 2 leaves a lot to be desired technically. The graphics are decent but no MGS4 and the trial and error gameplay really annoyed me on a number of occasions

      • I like its scale. Theres so much going on at once. There was just so much in it! And it felt like everything had been turned up to 11.

  4. damnit kamiboy i forgot are you on my friends list because if you arnt the person i have has a very similar name

    • Itsa not me, Kamiboy!

Nope, sorry mate I don’t know who you have on your list but I personally know all of the ones I have on mine.

  5. I’m going to buy practically all the games on the list. I’m sure I read/heard that SoE is not going to charge a monthly subscription for The Agency but I’m guessing it might, just might, be true and the same goes for DC Universe Online.

  6. FFXIII ( especially versus ) …. OMGWTFBBQ !
    ( 3rd eye cry ! )
Only Square game I’ve looked forward to since FFX , the rest have been watered down tripe .
The CGI clip looks tremendous , no other word for it . Did 8 , 9 , 10 etc. have much more footage ? …. Nope . If it worked ( effectively ) before then why change the habit of a lifetime ?
I agree with pretty much everything else , Heavy Rain looks a bit gash. The Agency is being over hyped in magazine’s and I’m thinking ” are we looking at the same thing here ? ”
    But FFXIII I totally disagree with ……. 90% ( 2010 probably a safe bet !! :) ) .

    • 8, 9 and 10 came out in a very different time, in a long passed era where stuffing your game with CGI looking so good that it makes the actual ingame graphics look like sheit in contrast was a ok move. But remember, already back in the PSOne era there were certain visionary developers who instead of the extravagant but very detached look of CGI preferred to render all cutscenes in their game using the games engine. Metal Gear Solid and Square’s very own Vagrant Story stand out in my mind very brightly when thinking back.

Somehow those games feel less dates when you go back and play them when compared to the CGI fest Final Fantasy titles. Today though the gaming field has changed completely and so has people’s expectations and with it what they consider acceptable and what developers can get away with.

Stuffing your game with unreal looking CGI then giving the player control of a very dissimilar much muted looking interactive graphical world is awkward and makes your games look very dated. Most developers have caught on to this morsel of wisdom, not so SquareEnix I see, which will not help them to try and get hold on to those western gamers they so lust for that they are willing to sell out.

When Vagrant Story’s director, Yasumi Matsuno, helmed Final Fantasy XII he recognised the awkwardness of SqureEnixe’s previous ways of doings things and saw to dialling back the CGI clips heavily in favour of in-game cutscenes. Unfortunately he was muscled out of that game project and SquareEnix about half way through and it is evident that both the game and the company are the poorer for it.

I am fairly certain Versus is going to be a pretty poor substitute for that big real Final Fantasy exclusive SONY so dearly needs and so unwisely lost. But I am not sure how people are going to react to the dated use of much CGI in the game once it does launch in 2009 or 2010. I feel Japanese gamers will be ok with it but personally I cringe and facepalm myself when I see how Square can be so detached from today’s gaming landscape.

      • I find it rather annoying when people big up or down a game with so little info. Now it’s not just you or YOURMUMANDME above you, it’s everyone.

Okay making a judgement on Killzone 2, fine. There’s been plenty of gameplay footage shown and a hell of a lot has come out of the beta. Infamous even, now we’ve only seen a bit but we have seen something. Uncharted 2 we can make a reasonable guess as the prequel was good on the same piece of kit. Until we see a reasonable amount of footage that is gameplay for either Final Fantasy’s how can anyone say that it will be fantastic or it will be poo.

  7. Killzone 2, it’s good, it’s bad, and it’s gonna get fuckin ugly!

  8. er, hi everyone! Another lurker finally registers…

Nice list… but what about Gran Turismo 5? :)

    • They already said not to expect it this year.

  9. Crash Commando 2 (if it comes); F’ing awesome!

  10. I wrote about about the potential impact of MMO’s on consoles back in October
    http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2008/10/13/the-mmos-are-coming/

I’m not sure many people’s relationship will stand up to the main TV in the house being hogged by an MMO addict, who are normally locked away on the spare room’s computer playing for 22 hours a day.

I hate shooters of any kind, but I’ve fell in love with Warhawk, I’m wondering if MAG will be ll that bad, or just dominated by American idiots.

Heavy Rain looks like a DVD game to me, the kind of game that clogs up the aisles in the run up to Christmas as people spend a tenner on something to give to an Aunt they never speak to.

I am probably going to be buying most of the games on that list, but of the stuff I’m not interested in, they will hopefully translate into PS3 sales, because if the PS3 sales don’t pick up in ‘09 they never will.

But on Killzone2, don’t compromise your views just to satisfy popular opinion

  11. Superb article kamiboy.

  12. What would you rather win at though..pricing and interface or high definition and the games. which is what makes pss3 the better console in my opinion

  13. Ye i agree with that, the boss fights are wicked and when you get like 50 of them zombie things running at you at once its exhilirating.

  14. Educated guesses me boy, games are my hobby and I keep a close look. That aside I have seen some CGI trailers of Versus so I KNOW for a fact that is has CGI in it, and I can speculate it might even have a lot of CG in it, but any will do really.

You see, I have a personal vendetta against pre-rendered CGI used in games, I hate it, see, so Versus already has something about it that ticks me off and so far it has nothing else.

  15. Oh I no doubt admit that it will be riddled with CGI and whether you like that or not is your own preference. My only point is that really people have no clue on how good or bad this game will be. From what we know so far it could get a 30 metacritic or a 99. We just don’t know enough.

It would be like saying of the new Watchmen movie is fantastic, I’ve seen the trailer.

  16. Click my on name and scroll down to the Versus verdict, then you’ll see that I wasn’t actually passing judgement on that game. Only saying that it is not coming this year and so far we have nothing to go on, so ugly by default.
