I think it's all becoming a little clearer now. If you live in North America you can pre-order the game from Gamestop and receive a code for the demo that will be activated on the 5th Feb. Still in North America, if you don't pre-order with Gamestop then the demo will be available via the PSN after the games launch. Meanwhile in Europe it looks more likely that we will get the demo on the 19th Feb, which is a Thursday, so makes the store update for that week. Ahh lovely!

UPDATE: It seems now that the demo will be released in Europe via the PSN prior to the launch of the game. SCEE have revealed that the demo will be available before the games launch. A date of 19th Feb is rumoured amongst the forum sites.

The demo is more than likely to be pre-release code as well. So you are not even going to be playing the final code for release, which as you say may put people off from buying the game. It's the same with beta testing, you have to put in the back of your mind that this is nowhere near the quality of the final game. Saying that the beta for Killzone was bloody good.

I don't think it's a certainty that demos before launch cause extra sales. In fact they are more likely to reduce sales as they either a)put people off the game, or b)give people something to play for free, which means they get to try it without spending money.

If a game is good it makes more sense to release a demo after it has launched, as the core gamers will buy the game on release on the strength of the reviews/hype alone, and then the demo is used to attract the more casual gamers later, when the game is actually in the shops and available for purchase. It also allows the publisher to drum up another round of publicity after the game has launched.

It also takes time to make a demo, which most devs can ill afford in the run up to release.

Trust me, if the demo is anything like the Beta, it is not cack...
hopefully a similar thing wont happen over here and we'll be able to get the demo without having to pre-order from anywhere...

Maybe the demo is cack and they don't wanna put people off!

Seems the only logical explanation as to why they'd do this

The only good thing about GS is that they take visa gift cards in exchange for PSN cards so I don't have to get any of my money wrapped up in the wretched place. Its pretty sad when people at Best Buy know more about games because the GS kids are about as fringe dork as they come.

But if you weren't sure if you were going to buy the game, a demo might persuade you.

Thats exactly what I was thinking.
I hope this is part of some sort of bigger picture scheme thing.
If not, then they really do have less common sense than I thought.

The thing that I find really strange is why would Sony give a exclusive demo to people that are already going to buy the game? Surely putting the demo out for everyone before release may persuade those that are undecided to actually buy the game.

I love Gamestop. I buy almost all of my games there. And all my PS3 and 360 accessories too. This is the only store I know that still sells used NES and Genesis games.

Nofi, I never no where you get your information from so can I ask if you have had this from an official source or just from Gamestop. As I understand it if you are in America and have pre-ordered the game with Gamestop you will be eligible for a pre-release demo by either collecting a game card with a promo card on from today,5th Jan, or wait to be emailed a code if purchased online, around the beginning of Feb. Either way the demo won't be available until the beginning of Feb and it's only in America. For us Europeans there is still hope of a PSN demo to be released 1 0r 2 weeks before launch. Do some digging around for us if possible, you obviously have more contacts. Cheers mate.

Edit: Just found out that the demo (America only) is from Feb5th to Feb26th.
