Big growth for the platform holders, big sales for the retailers. Just us with no money then?

Hot on the heels of Michael beating me to the punch for his number-crunching story, I find some more sales-related claptrap to throw at you…

Some figures on MCV from Game’s strong sales reports indicate that the PS3 has more than doubled its install base this year up from 0.9 million to 1.9 million.

That is still lower than the Xbox360 which rose from 1.8m to 3.2m (so in percentage-growth terms didn’t perform as well as the PS3) but the 360′s sales figures will be swayed by the massive price reductions it saw in the latter half of the year. In fact, with those price cuts the Xbox is probably cheaper than a hotel bed in Gaza at the minute.

So in total the UK install base for games consoles has gone from 4.7m in January last year to 10m as of January 3rd this year. I would imagine that growth is pretty much unrivalled anywhere given the current financial situation.

Needless to say that the Wii accounts for nearly half those numbers, increasing from 2m to 4.9m.

I’ve left the handheld figures out but you probably already know that the DS is selling like cheap beer and the PSP is doing OK in comparison.
