Play TV is wonderful, it really is, although it was previously missing a few vital options, such as the ability to set reminders for future programs, auto-switch channels, that sort of thing. So imagine our excitement when a 1.02 patch was released yesterday, bringing a whole wad of new features. Like, er, slightly faster guide response, and support for Italian guide ordering. And something else to do with the guide, but, bizarrely, no reminders.
So, in what is still pretty much the best Freeview box on the planet, it’s still impossible to set a reminder to switch from Casualty to Eastenders. Yes, you can record, rewind, even twist time and space itself, but you can’t set a reminder. Here’s a reminder, Sony, that we need some reminders. Otherwise, good job.

It’s kind of strange to think that you’re able to update your freeview box, but it’s a great idea. The reminders and channel switching and all that jazz will probably come in a not too distant update.

Is it me or is Play tv Really complicated to update??. It took me ages to find the update part to update it…

Ironically, the new update does fix that. In fact you might say they’ve overcompensated for their previous deficiencies in that area…

Hmm, annoying. I have to set something to record, and use that as my reminder, then cancel the recording when it starts.

Dudes really, we can learn from the ladies! Buy or use an alarm clock/watch/or use your mobile in conjunction with “what’s on tv guide”. Then apparently when it all goes wrong or you miss a recording you’re allowed to curse and blame your other half as it’s their fault!!!!!! You can shout at them from the bathroom and tell them to record heroes cos you have no time as your washing your hair! Genius!
But seriously, Sony fix it! I’m fed up of tipping Olbas oil in her eyes cos of her nagging about recordings!!!

needs “record season” option and the option to compress the video a bit more, i aint got it but my bro recorded match of the day at weekend and it came in at a few gigabytes! wtf!
it’s like having all your music stored in wavs! no need!

You can set it to record at the same time every day/week/month. But if the program for some reason changes time one night, PlayTV won’t know and will just record at the time you set it at.

Totally agree, the thing it is most missing is the series link option. Until then i still use my trusty humax freeview box (which get updates over the air!). No need to remember when anything is on anymore, i’ll soon be completely done with my brain!

Standard Recording weighs in at 1gig per hour (I believe). Play TV with a 80gig PS3 is like a Ferrari with 1ltr of fuel. You wanna get more outta it you need to drop a bigger HDD. £60 for 300gig last time I checked. That’s more than enough for this gen of consoles

Yo, I’m bout to drop a bigger HDD in da club
320GB for 50 squids off play:

As we should all know by now, this really only gives you 298 usable GB of space, but it’s still one of the best deals about atm.

does anyone know whether it will be able to receive the freeview hd channels when they’re broadcast. i know its supposed too but i read it can receive them if they’re broadcast in a DVB-T1 signal but they’ve changed the hd broadcast to a DVB-T2 signal which requires different hardware to receive.
i also haven’t got much of a scooby what thats all about either????????

I don’t think they’ve decided what format to broadcast in yet (unless they have in the past few weeks since I was looking into it) but it is true, as far as I can figure out, that PlayTV will only receive one type and there’s a possibility that the Freeview broadcasts will be in another format.
Basically if you’re thinking of getting freeview PlayTV is better than any of the standalone PVR freeview boxes I’ve tried (unless Series link is your world) but if you want HD you need freesat or one of the subscription services that are still over-priced. If you think of it like that and the backward UK broadcasting industry decides to use the format PlayTV can receive then it will be a bonus.

PlayTV infuriated about a fortnight ago , well , the twats in charge of the freeview change over did anyway . I took my £70 to argos to buy it and it’s not covered in their 28 day return policy so I couldn’t ‘test’ it to see of it works . Instead I just double checked my areas change over (2010 !) and asked Mr. Nofi if it needed to be freeview enabled , for some reason I thought the Internet boosted it , he confirmed . I am now very sad …

I’d presume so, it works in Northern Ireland, I can vouch for that. Don’t you guys just get the same freeview channels as us but with RTE and TG4?
