I think it was blocked somewhere between 1.5 – 1.52. Everything was a repackage of something specifically for java/bd-j except PS3Filer (a browser and image viewer). In other words, Linux.

It had nothing to do with reverse engineer (in comparison to DaX CFW-M33 on the PSP) or circumventing any licences.. it was a bit of Java code found on the media, used in a lot things and AFAIWA it’s open source.

I don’t know how they did it, but if it involved reverse engineering or circumventing anything then they will have broken the licence they agreed to when using the PS3 software

I thought (am pretty sure) it got blocked with the last firmware update.

I didn’t get a chance to try it.. never got round to it really. I’m all for homebrew applications and programs. You can do it on the PSP (much to Sony’s disgust, but that only because of the ISO loader thats out), you could even do it on the original Playstation, remember the Yaroze?

I think it’s great, people gaining have the ability to code their own applications and publish them.. not much different to XBLA to be honest.

And don’t forget that someone recently has found the ability to put their PS3 (Jap/US 40GB’s only, due to the Emotion Engine) in to Service Mode and play PS2 games.

But by saying that it was bad or pointless is a bit daft really.. cos if these people weren’t about then we wouldn’t have the games or the technology we do today.

well i did know about it ( http://www.ps3-hacks.com )
but after trying (and failing) to get it to work i gave up…to be honest, theres lots better games i could be playing on my ps3, but saying that – i did think it was rather cool

I never even knew it was possible , it’s really annoying when updates take a feature away .
I used to ” save taget as ” download any videos from google or ” other ” sites with ease , now you have to trudge through a few menu’s to do it . Why not take advantage of a useless square button or something .

What on earth is the point? If there is an exploit could’t they achieve the same thing still by burning a blueray with tha java on it? And if there is no exploit and they only want to prevent unapproved games it’s also pointless since we could install ps3 linux and play java that way.
