EA has announced that Need For Speed: Shift is aiming for a September 17th release in Europe and the 22nd in America. Yes, Europe…. earlier. Go on, read it again, I’ll wait.

Need For Speed has been hankering for a makover for quite some time and in tune with EA’s new philosophy they seem to be addressing a whole load of problems with several of their franchises, including the Fast and Furious wannabe. They don’t seem to be doing things by half either. We’re not just talking about a new race mechanic or a new way to look at your cars in the garage, we’re talking about a full re-invention of the franchise Madonna stylee.

Behold, the trailer

This trailer looks like the real deal with in game footage confirming EA’s confident push on quality for established brands. Roll on September!

  1. That actually looks amazing. It’s very GRID in terms of style, but GRID didn’t give me as much of a visual orgasm as that just did.

    • They seem to have really worked on the whole g-force thing. It makes quite a difference.

  2. 2009 the year of the racer?

I’m looking forward to Split/Second more than this, but this trailer certainly looks the part

  3. That looked amazing. What happened to freeroaming?

    • N4S is changing direction completely this year, dropping all the urban undertones which have been in prvious editions

Shift, is taking a simulation approach I believe, but there is an Arcade style racer coming out as well, but only on the DS & Wii

      • Oh thank god. Hopefully midnight club will follow soon. Dammit rockstar I enjoyed chasing a double decker bus with a milkfloat in a free roaming splitscreen game! What happened?!

…although pimping a milkfloat would be fun I guess

  4. Meh..

Nothing beats NFSU 2. I’m not so into the race on a closed track thing anymore..

    • But it does look good…

watever happened to the edit button…

  5. I used to love NFS but between that and Midnight Club the whole ‘urban street racing’ thing has got very tired. I would love to see a genuinely fun competitor to Gran Turismo rise from the ashes of the recent NFS games

  6. I always though Gran Turismo was in it’s own league but GT5: Prologue was crap. I hope the full game is slightly similar to GT4 and not have stupid races like getting to the front of the pack before the race is over. I hated those races. I couldn’t get past the second one in the Honda Civic I think it was.

I don’t mind them as optional races but not mandatory races.

    • I think those races in prologue were a way to wring extra gameplay out without needing more cars/tracks. The full game will obviously not have that problem so hopefully there will be more choice and you can avoid races you don’t like
