The Games Developers Conference is a place where developers and industry types go to show off to each other and generally give themselves a big pat on the back for being awesome.

They have awards too though and, whilst it’s a bit late for the ubiquitous Game of the Year rush that happens in December and early January it is interesting to see what developers are rating. The list is pretty much spot on in my opinion, except for the Visual Arts category which went to Prince of Persia. I thought the art direction on that game was just horrible, it looked like my 4 year old nephew had drawn them with one of my sharpies and coloured them in with a starter set of cheap watercolours.

Anyway, my opinion clearly isn’t as important as these developer types so I’ll just show you the list:

Game of the Year – Fallout 3 (Bethesda Softworks)
Best Game Design – LittleBigPlanet (Media Molecule)
Best Writing – Fallout 3 (Bethesda Softworks)
Best Technology – LittleBigPlanet (Media Molecule)
Best Visual Arts – Prince of Persia (Ubisoft Montreal)
Best Debut Game – LittleBigPlanet (Media Molecule)
Best Handheld Game – God Of War: Chains Of Olympus (Ready at Dawn)
Innovation Award – LittleBigPlanet (Media Molecule)
Best Audio – Dead Space (EA Redwood Shores)
Best Downloadable Game – World Of Goo (2D Boy)

Actually I just realised that Fallout 3, a game which only gets more broken with each update, got their game of the year which is insane. It also won best writing in a year when MGS4 and GTAIV were released which is double insane. So should developers stick to developing and leave the awards to people like us?
