Cut-scenes run in 1080p, game itself is just 720p.

You might have heard elsewhere on the web this morning that the Final Fantasy XIII playable demo (which comes with the Advent Children Blu-ray in Japan) runs in native 1080p. This isn’t strictly true: the cutscenes are 1080p, but the actual game itself is upscaled 720p. Still, this is the game as it was back in December, so there’s still time for the gameplay to be running at a native 1080p when the full game finally launches. The demo itself is pretty cool, albeit quite limited in scope, with some neat new changes to how the battle system works, namely free magic and a tweaked action bar, we’ll try and get a full hands on for you a little later.

  1. You know, i’ve never been able to tell the difference. But then i’ve never shelled out for a 40″ TV.
IMO GTA4 proved that the native output really doesn’t hamper your gaming experience. Fanboys were screaming when they found out that GTA4 on PS3 was 630p upscaled. But why? It still looked good to me. We can expect this to go into the “How to be a Fanboy for Dummies” book, under the “Game reference for non 1080p PS3 games” chapter. Yawn.

    • As much as Id like to agree with Liam, you can tell the difference between 1080 and 720. WipeoutHD is pin prick sharp, Ratchet and Clank, as good as it is still looks a teensy bit fuzzy.

      I blame sodding Xbox.

      • I’ve heard and am sure that a 40″ TV will show the difference. But i’m stuck with 19″ sammy under the stairs. So 720p at 2ft away does me fine. I’ve had a look at LG 32″ vs Bravia 32″ in both 720 and 1080 in John Lewis, and I couldn’t tell the difference in games. But i noticed the XMB icons were smaller and “neater” in 1080p.

      • Skip or Rent… Because it’s going to be a fucking port. Everybody knows if you make it on ps3 first you can’t port it to “GayBox” and since it’s coming to “GB” it’s programmed on it and port to ps3. That’s way it’s 720p… And that sucks

  2. Well, I don’t really care for it to be upscaled 720p or native 1080p, but is the output 1080p?
Everytime I see my TV changing from the 1080p while in the XMB to 720p (automatic resolution detection) when a game starts kinda annoys me…
Why can’t they just make the output 1080p? This even makes me question why on earth I bought a FullHD 1080P TV :S

    • Eh? My XMB is runs in 1080P

      • Oh sorry read your post the wrong way round :D

      • Yes, mine too, but almost all games are only 720p….

    • Sounds sensible, theres probably some clever reason, but im with you on it. It would be nice to have 1080p constantly, then just upscale everything. Plus more uptions to upscale PS1 and PS2, and also adjust widescreen aspects.

      • Well, if upscaling of PS3 games would work on the PS3 I would be happy already, but it is strange that I can play PS2 games on 1080P, watch ordinary DVD’s in 1080P, but have to play my newest PS3 games in 720P, just doesn’t makes sense to me

  3. And anyone who has Killzone running in 1080p, that’s your TV upscaling it, not the PS3.

  4. Is Advent Children Blu-ray out in Japan then?
And also nofi, if you’re giving us the low down a little later, does this mean you have a copy?

Jammy Git / Not that Lucky (delete as appropriate) ;)

    • Er yes ACBR came with a Final Fantasy 13 Demo.. pay attention :D

      • Is it not the other way round. The demo comes with ACBR?

  5. Advent Children on Blu-Ray is bigger news to me haha

  6. Hopefully it will be 1080P when it comes out fully but will that be possible as it is a multi-platfrom title?

    • Cod4 and 5 came out in 1080p so you never know…

  7. You know what, I have absoloutely zero idea on what my games run on on my PS3, its on a HD TV so thats all I really care about.

    Still looks amazing eitherway.

    • Cod4 and 5 came out on 1080p so you never know.

      • Replyd to the wrong text. Ment to reply to pargonknight.

  8. I was looking at 2 screen shots earlier at 1080p and upscaled 1080p, but to be perfectly honest, it wasn’t till I zoomed in that I started noticing the differences.
    I don’t have 1080p anyway though, so I’m fine.

  9. My mate has a 42″ fullhd tv linked up to his ps3 and when he came round to my house he thought my picture quality was better than his even though I only have a 24″ hdready goodmans thing.
I believe it all depends on your specific tv wether or not you can truly tell the difference but i know one thing, blu-rays have outstanding quality and they are full 1080p arnt they?
Its a crying shame that we dont have more 1080p games out there…especially because we have a system to support it.

  10. Have you let the PS3 auto detect your output settings? If so go to settings/video and manual settings. Un-tick everything except 1080p, and that “should” force 1080p output. Bearing in mind some games won’t upscale to 1080p and you’ll be stuck with 720p if that’s the case. Just had a look, and Killzone supports 720p only, where as Ferrari Challenge does 720p, 1080i and 1080p. So maybe the games are locked at 720p to prevent screen tearing and bad frame rates? If it’s designed to run at native 720p then not letting the PS3 upscale it to 1080p makes sense, as it uses resources and will reduce clarity.

  11. Yeah you are probably right about the frame rate and stuff, but isn’t that a bit strange with a powerhouse like the PS3?
I ain’t saying that 720P gives bad graphics, only that I could have done that on my HD Ready 1080i TV…..
But hey, as long as the games are coming, Im not that unhappy :P

  12. You prolly wont see the difference on a 19″, but on a 46″ you can see the difference. I tend to think of it as the ‘fluffy ps3 effect’ along the edges.

You can tell the difference.. although I don’t really mind all that much, especially with FFXIII… It can run in 480p and I will eat it up.

  13. I have fifty two inches of pleasure. Shows up everything.

  14. FIFTY TWO!!! good god. my 42″ almost killed me. but is it true isf you have a smaller tv with 1080p it looks better than a bigger one. i see the logic because all the pixels are more compact in a smaller space.

  15. Yeah, I know my bravia tells me in a little grey box in the corner that its switched to 720p.. its a little bit annoying

  16. Yeah it is. ;)

  17. Someone needs to pay more attention than me.

  18. Oops! Why
