Well, the rumours were true: thief4.com has just gone live, and there’s now an official forum. Precious few details, but we’ll keep you up to date as normal. “Eidos-Montréal is excited to unveil, their previously secret second title in development at the studio, as Thief 4, the next instalment in the legendary series!” says the press release.
“The original Thief title revolutionised 1st person gaming and defined a new genre of stealth based game play. Thief has consistently met with critical acclaim, with the revered series winning awards for its originality in gameplay and sound design.”
Previous to today the internet rumour mill was convinced that Eidos would officially announce the game today, based on an advert in the latest issue of Edge which clearly shows a spiked ‘T’ and a ’4′ peeping out from underneath a “May 11th” banner. Eidos themselves actually revealed the game last year, saying their next AAA title would be from an established franchise that began with the letter ‘T’.
If there was any doubt, the Edge advert lists a few accolades, namely Gamespy’s “Hall of Fame” and Gamespot’s “Greatest Games of All Time” which ties the announcement to Thief, and only Thief.
“Were in the early development stages for Thief 4,” says the press release, “but this is an incredibly ambitious project and a very exciting one. It’s too early for us to offer any specific game details, right now we are focused on recruiting the very best talent to join the core team at the studio and help us make, what we believe will be one of the most exciting games on the market.”
