As you may remember, a few weeks back I claimed that half my left testicle would be gladly given for the chance to play Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time and today my willingness to sacrifice was intensified by a look at the first ever footage of the upcoming title which you can watch here at GameTrailers.
Whilst simply being a short look at the gameplay, and although the main mechanics remain the same, there is actually a fair bit of new information present. First and foremost is the fact that the older Lombax from the teaser trailer, now known to be General Alistar Azimuth friend of Ratchet’s father, is fighting alongside you. He carries some sort of futuristic martial arts weapon which has him hopping all over the shop and Ratchet has acquired some new boots which have him zooming around just as much.
Insomniac have confirmed that these boots will be present throughout the entire adventure as a means of travelling around faster, suggesting that the maps this time will be much larger than before. Something else which caught my interest was that one of the weapons Ratchet used was entirely organic. It appeared to be some sort of alien creature which burped a fiery shock-wave onto enemies. It seemed odd to see a fleshy weapon in contrast to the usual mechanical guns which fill your arsenal.
However, what stood out most to me was the absence of Clank. We do not know how early on in the game the featured level was, however, the fact that everyone’s favourite little robot was not present certainly is worth noting. Still though, his name is in the title and I very much doubt that Insomniac would waste much time without him.
Whilst talking about the footage, Insomniac also stated that there will be time travel featured in the game and that there are yet more surprises to come. The recent relaunch of their podcast also suggested toward a lot of content which would encourage second playthroughs and other such things to flesh out the game. Multiplayer anyone? Co-op? Personally, whilst I loved the multiplayer of the 3rd game, I really hope that there will be no co-op here. This is strongly being hinted at as the last game in the series and I wish it to remain a personal story between Ratchet and Clank. Not even Ratchet’s father should infringe upon that.
There is much to be speculated over, but with E3 only days away, the speculation should not have to last long. I couldn’t be more excited.

The trailer at least hinted towards co-op between Ratchet and the older Lombax, and personally I’d be all for it. Online co-op (perhaps as a reward for finishing the game?) would be perfect for this. TOD featured such big open well designed worlds that could easily accommodate co-operative play.

Yeah, I can see how co-op would be fun, but I love the story of the franchise and if this is to be their last adventure, I’d like to see the focus on Ratchet and Clank with just the occasional help from the father like what happened with jetpack woman last time around. She wasn’t always present, but she came in here and there to help. If they did something similar to the co-op in R2 and Uncharted 2 with it as separate missions or a separate campaign, then I’d be happy to see it.

It’s not his father. I was watching the show and they said his name was Allistar and he was another lombax or something. Watch the show after the second break to see what I mean.

Yeah, I heard that too but still suspected that he may be the father, however, upon investigation, it turns out his name is “General Alistar Azimuth” and that he was once the leader of the Lombax and is a friend of Ratchet’s father.
Sorry for the confusion

Looks impressive! Personally I’m all for some sort of co-op/multiplayer. Never played it on the PS2 but ToD needed some more replay value, as excellent as it was!
Does anyone else think that the graphics have changed a bit? It looks a bit more cell shaded (prince persia-esqe) rather than the usual pixar stuff!

It’s certainly the last in the ‘Future’ trilogy of Tools of Destruction, Quest for Booty and this.
And with all the talk of separation in the press release for the game, who knows where it could go.

Again – Nooooooooooooo!
I guess developers must get bored of churning out the same thing and want to move on to something new but the day R&C finishes will be a sad one (not as sad as if they do a Tomb Raider with it and start losing the plot though). I guess if that happens i’ll just have to download them as retro classics on my psWii60 5 and enjoy them all over again!

EASILY among my most anticipated games. Loved the series from the beginning, and Insomniac have been fine servants to my gaming needs. If there’s a collector’s edition I’ll buy it (if I have to import and THEN get it in PAL format for DLC, I will).
R&C games are among an elite few that can get me hyped and excited. Consider me DESPERATE for this game.

R&C 3 had co-op splitscreen. It was fun and if I didnt have my ps3, id probably be playing it, aswell as MGS2, GT3 and the getaway. I could live off ps3 exclusives becuase there so good. Ratchet and clank is just soo goood. This next 1 will have trophys!!!! also im hoping they have the R.Y.N.O gun.
