Back in May I saw that one of our ever resourceful readers, Tuffcub, had posted in the forums about a little meeting of industry heads in my home town. How could I not go? Whilst I didn’t exactly know what to expect it turned out to be totally worth the effort. It brought forth some really interesting thoughts which I’ll be letting you all know about later on in the week.

Get to the good stuff, right? I will, however it does require a small explanation. You see, one of the speakers at the lecture was none other than the much loved co creator of the original Elite and Chairman of Frontier, David Braben (you whippersnappers might have to do some googling). I have the slideshows that accompanied his very entertaining talk and in the section introducing himself, as if he needs to, he details that Elite IV, the often dismissed sequel is set to release on the PC, the 360 and, as you might have guessed, the PS3.
This is, of course, great news as back in the day Elite was one of the most forward thinking concepts out there. A huge chunk of the games industry will quite happily admit that some of the roots of many current strategy genres owe Elite big time. We have no clue as to when Elite IV will surface but it’s bound to be under wraps untill Frontier have The Outsider in the bag, which, as a side note, I’m most definitely looking forward to.
Oh, and here’s hoping that ‘more lost winds’ comes our way too.

Hey, I’ve actually got a copy of Frontier: Elite II around here somewhere. All boxed and near-mint condition.

I spent a lot of time playing Elite on my C64. Didn’t even know parts 2 and 3 exist. I’m curious what the new PS3 version will be like!

Honestly, I’d rather they worked on finishing The Outsider – it sounds like an interesting concept, but has just been in development forever!
Elite IV would be good I s’pose, but will likely never live up to people’s memories of the original.

Please, pretty please with sugar on top keep the flight model.
I played Frontier on the amiga and absolutely loved it, and the fact that it had an accurate physics model, where you kept travelling unless you used thrusters to slow yourself down, meant it played completely different from other space sims that are just “planes in space”.
They should also keep the classical music in there (was it there in elite and first encounters too?) just use an orchestra recording instead this time around.

BBC Micro B & Elite all the way for me.

This is good news, hopefully get some flight time on my Cobra MkIII before I bump into those troublesome Thargoids!
Right on Commander!

From time to time I fire up Frontier on my Amiga Emulator, I do still have this disks (the game was on one disk, with the other as the save game) around here somewhere.
It’s quite astonishing that there was so much game play on 1.44mb floppy.
I played Elite on my MSX for many many hours.
I hope he/they manage to retain the magic.

So, is this out around the same time as Duke Nukem Forever then?

Great games and great times.
Too bad that David -Bugs Bunny- Braben used to bring out the series way ahead of proper game completion.
Sometimes the games had more bugs in them then the hood of a car after a summer day ride in the country.
Mind you, the game concept was absolutely brilliant and it had a more devoted following than many an ayatollah.
Cant wait to see this one.
