Despite the PSPgo not landing on retail shelves until the 1st of November, the first title to be classed under the (official?) moniker of “UMD ダウンロード” (or “UMD Download”) is Nippon Ichi’s Hayarigami Portable Keishichou Kaii Jiken File, which will appear on the Japanese PSN Store for PSP later today, at a re-release budget price. Yes, we’ve had a couple of download-only games for the PSP (like Patapon 2 in the States) but never before have we seen this classification of UMD Download, suggesting that this will be the permanent title for these games.

Well at least it’s starting, I hope SCEE start placing titles on the PSN before November so there is a good choice of games to tempt people to buy the Go and so we can get in on the download action before the consoles release.

Uh.. what? UMD Download games have been on the store for months. What the heck is this about? Go into the PSP Downloads section of the PSN Store, its full of UMD Download titles.

I think this article is about the fact that the Japan store has introduced “UMD Download” branding, not that UMD downloads are in anyway new, my guess is that it is to differentiate them, from the hinted at “smaller iPhone style” games and apps

I thought this was about swapping UMD’s for PSN titles , are they planning to do that or have they decided not to go through with the goodwill scheme ?

there’s been no official words on what the end plan will be. I don’t think they should bother, honestly.

It’s a good thing that they are starting this early.

Is Europe scheduled to receive “Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman!”? I belive in the US that is also getting a UMD only release.
I think the difference between this title and those previously released is that this is download only, where as previous titles including Patapon 2 did receive UMD releases in some territories.

There’s quite a few download-only PSP games out on the store already, HIoPB isn’t going to be the first by any means. There’s atleast Super Stardust and some other space shooting game I saw on there, but I’m sure theres a few more.

Sounds great. Are these downloadable games also playable on a PSP-3000?

True, but you can play the PS1 games you already have on the PS3, and the PS2 games on some PS3s (and hopefully all soon). But this different, as there is no difference in the technical specs between the UMD PSP games and the downloaded full psp games on the psn.
