Folding@Home Update

Article written by Watchful in Community News, on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 15:00.

Back in May we told you how two members of our community, Jas-n and TheDeathAvenger, had set up a TSA team for the Folding@Home application that lives within the Life with PlayStation icon on your PS3’s XMB.  We also said we would be bringing you monthly updates on the team’s progress.  Last month’s got missed in the flurry of activity surrounding E3, so apologies for that.

What is Folding@Home?

It is an application the makes use of your PS3’s processing power to solve biological puzzles.  These particular puzzles are looking at how protein molecules assemble themselves or ‘fold’.  Proteins are exceptionally important molecules and F@H’s biomedical research is currently studying diseases like Alzheimer’s, Huntingdon’s, Parkinson’s and cancer as well as working to develop new antibiotics.

How do you Join the Team?

The first step is to make sure that you change your PS3’s F@H identity from the default “PS3″ to your TSA ID.  It could be anything but if you use your TSA ID it will help us recognise you.  Then you will need to tell the F@H application you want to be in our team.

The Team’s Progress

At the start of May Team TSA was languishing way down the listings with a rank of only 21,281 out of 158,205.  We have come a long way in the, almost two months, since then.  Our rank early (01:30!) this morning was 4233 out of 161,161.

  1. nice work everybody. I’ll join when i remember… :-D

  2. Yeah, good work guys

  3. Didn’t expect to be that high up the table. Will be doing some more folding tonight. :)

  4. The Folding at home icon was replaced some time ago. How do you re-activate it?

    • What do you mean? It changed it’s name to Life with Playstation, if that helps.

  5. What impact does this have on bandwidth usage? I get real close to my cap as is…

    • Very little. The work units aren’t that big and the only network traffic is when the PS3 downloads a new one and uploads the results.

  6. Nice to see F@H Team on the front page. I know i’ve not been folding much lately as some days it’s been so hot i’ve not wanted to leave my PS3 running for too long, plus i’ve been playing it a lot more.

  7. I still haven’t finished one yet, poor show by myself. I don’t like leaving my PS3 on at night anymore but when I finish uni I’m going to use my 2nd PC to fold.

  8. I might give it the odd go once in a while now , it just takes up so much tim . Well done to everyone else though

  9. Nice progress! I should fold a bit more again.

  10. Completely forgot about this, sorry. Am signing up now! Go Team TSA!

  11. How good are we? :-)

  12. IM NOT BOTTOM. Great job to everyone who folds. I haven’t done much but I’m going to start
