Whilst we are used to seeing the hardware sales figures for the US and Japan on a regular basis, via NPD Group and Media Create respectively, letting us know how well the console wars are progressing in those far-flung territories, UK numbers are harder to come by. UK hardware sales are monitored by GfK ChartTrack and to get them you need to be a subscriber. The TSA piggy bank fiercely guards the few pennies it contains so, unable to subscribe, we rely on other subscribing organisations to publish the numbers for us.
One reliably bi-annual source of those numbers is GAME Group PLC, the UK’s biggest video game retailer, who operate both the GAME and Gamestation chains of stores. This week they held their Annual General Meeting and presented their trading update to the 27th June. That trading update contains the figures for the current UK installed base of consoles as well as reproducing the figures from GAME’s last three updates. So how is the console war playing out in the UK? It looks like this:

Running down the latest set of numbers for the consoles we have the Nintendo DS way out in front with 9.1m sold, followed by the Wii with 5.4m, Xbox 360 with 3.9m, PSP with 3.3m, PS3 with 2.2m and finally the DSi with just 0.3m sold to date. As, arguably, the DSi is just another flavour of DS that leaves Sony’s two consoles trailing.
Things look even worse if we calculate the last year’s sales using the sets of numbers from both this year’s and last year’s AGMs, those dated 28/06/08 and 27/06/09. They show that the DS has sold 2.3m in the last 12 months, the Wii 2.3m, the 360 1.7m, the PS3 0.9m and the PSP just 0.5m.
So the 360 has been outselling the PS3 by almost two to one and the PS3 has been doing the same to the PSP. This shows two things. In its first eighteen months on sale the 360 sold 2.2m and it has come not far short of matching that in the last twelve. That shows you how successful last August’s price cut was. The second point is just how badly the PSP has sold in the past year. With the current £130, or less, PSP doing that badly, no wonder retailers and consumers are expressing some doubt about the forthcoming PSPgo, which is currently anticipated to retail for around £230.
The smart money is on a price cut for the PS3 no later than October, possibly announced as soon as August at Gamescom in Cologne. Given the weakness of the British pound how much of any price cut we will see is up for debate. The speculated $100 price cut may translate to £50 if we are lucky which would bring the PS3’s UK list price down to just £249 or just £20 more than a PSPgo.

if the wii wasnt around id bet ps3 would have alot more sales and be dominating the gaming market. there were over 120 million ps2 sales, where are the ps3 sales!!!!
but i love my ps3 anyway and sales doesnt affect me much.

I’ll wager that a lot of those PS2 owners have bought Wiis and are unlikely to buy a PS3 at any price. I’m a self-confessed Sony whore but I firmly believe they will struggle to avoid third place this generation*. And I don’t give a damn so long as we get good games and software support.
* Though only thanks to the 360s domination of the US market for HD consoles. Sony will surely “win” the HD battle for the rest of the world.

Not great I’ll admit but I’m liking the PS3’s line up at the min and nothing the xbox has coming up really makes me want jealous (even tho my bro has an xbox downstairs and I could quite easily just go down.)
Apart from Viva Pinatta, apart from COD4 I havent sunk so many hours into one game this generation, SO addicting and fun. And with many titles at the moment not keeping my attention for longer than one playthrough, I could do with Viva to play in the comforts of my own room please!
Damn Rare and Microsoft. Curse you both!
No I didnt meant that, another Viva please!

I reckon the high street under-tracks the PS3 and more expensive of the 360 SKUs. Conventional retailers shift huge numbers of Wiis; I reckon buyers of the aforementioned HD consoles are more likely to buy online where there is more chance of a deal on those higher £ figures.

Why is the Sony PlayStation 3 at the bottom?
I understand the PSP is successful, no one can deny that, but why isn’t the Sony PS3!?!?!?!?!???????
Waaa waaa, why?

Partly because it’s been on sale for less time than any of the others (except the DSi) and partly because it’s the most expensive.

MOSTLY because its expensive I say. I do believe its selling better (or the same) as the xbox 360 year on year so far?
I also think Sony rested on their laurels slightly with the PS3’s marketing. I think they seriously believed that people would snap up the PS3 after the PS2 even with the ridiculous price.
And the fact they have never even really bothered with marketing.
Its a really great console, theyve just messed it up. Now they’ve got mountains to climb. And not the small ones. Like the REALLY big ones

I understand if people see this differently but…
I dont even take notice of the X-box, I have had ps1 ps2 and when the 360 came out before the ps3 i didnt give it a minutes thought as to wether or not indulge in one, playstation has been the dominent brand over a decade now and when i got my ps3 soon after launch i was well chuffed with what i got, I still am and although xbox has a few tiny itty bitty perks that we dont have i still have daysof shock and awe when i put a new game in see the results.
PS is producing some of the best games ever made and I for one count myself lucky to be able to enjoy them.
In the end of it all I just dont care how many consoles have been sold in thelast 4 months or whatever other poll comes out next time. I am happy with what ive got and that is that for me.
MS are playstation wannabes with more pounds to spend, a bit like Chelsea wanting to be Man Utd.

I agree with you entirely. When the ‘box was released I didn’t give it a second glance, I set my sights on getting a PS3 and went for it. Best descision ever. It was a bit annoying having to wait a year stuck with a PS2 whilst alot of my mates were playing on there shiny (matte..) new 360’s but getting a PS3 was so much better and continues to increase in quality with great updates.
(also agree with you on the united thing

I find it quite interesting that if you look at the price of the 360 to ps3 right now in the UK it’s £200 to £300.
With the 360’s (elite) £200 price tag, the addition of £60 wireless router, £40 yearly subscription to XBL and however much it costs for the charge and play kit, It easily reaches £300.
Given the systems unreliability, lack of blu-ray support they only serve to further increase the cost of the console,
unfortunately the cost of everything you need for the 360 is usually not accounted for and the price of the ps3 can be intimidating at first glance.

For some reason I never took proper notice of the graph earlier.
SCEE should be worried that of the first 6 months of THIS year the gap is actually widening.
Sony doesn’t have the 360 in its sights, it’s not closing down fast on the back straight, it is not even keeping pace, but instead slowly being left behind.
Everyone keeps talking about Sony’s great line-up of games, and that the 360 cupboard is bare, and this is the year of the PlayStation… well somebody ought to tell the customers because they obviously couldn’t care less about the all the propaganda Sony is feeding us, and we run off and repeat – ad infinitum
Looking at 2009 figures so far only it looks like Sony have hardly shifted more than handful of consoles where as Microsoft has shifted close on a million. Even the Wii with it’s already huge install base has a stepper line (on 2009) than the PS3
2009 the year of the playstation – my arse!

A mum walks in to a shop to buy a PS3, she talks to the sales advisor, sorts her one out for £300 including 2 games… she see the 360 out the corner of her eye and remembers all the TV ads, so it registers with her… she ask the advisor how much it is… he says £170 with 2 free games
She says wow that nearly half the price… whats the main difference, the advisor says, well they both play hi-def games and hi-def movies, but twice as many people own a 360, so it’s more likely his friends at school have got one
no brainer really
She doesn’t know that on some websites some people talk about a few exclusives (even though the vast majority of them have a alternative exclusive on the 360)

I’ve not seen an advert for ps3 in months, before Christmas was the last one I actually saw on TV or at the cinema. xbox adverts are on radio and TV constantly. If a parent unaware of games goes into a store to buy a console, they are most likely going to go for the cheaper console and the one they see advertised more

there were a few for killzone but sony only advertise the exclusives. so expect plenty of uncharted adverts at christmas and a storm of adverts when god of war III comes along

i never buy from game, unless it was a pre-owned game as they are overpriced. i buy online and i am sure alot of other people do also. generaly i only ever see mums buying wii and ds games when i am in there.
maybe game is not doing so well?

everybody else has said it but sony do need to drop the ps3’s price but i think people don’t look into as much as they should. Yes the Xbox is cheaper but within two years you will have spent so much on xbox live that it will have cost you as much as a ps3 and in 5 years it will have cost you double the original price. so in the long run a ps3 is a better bargain.

I got my 60gb PS3 from Game about 18 months ago, as at the time they had the best deal and the Reward points were a nice bonus too !!
I also bought my Wii from Game as well for the same reasons!! Incidentally, my Wii hasn’t been switched on since last Christmas, even whilst my PS3 was away for repair!!!

When you walk in Game the majority of people in there are mums and kids buying crappy DS games.
I find Game too expensive though.

I genuinely think that part of the PSPGo strategy is to push sales of the 3000. People will see that PSP is a thriving format which Sony are still taking very seriously so will pick up the cheaper but compatible 3000. I would expect the Go to sell pretty poorly for 6 months until a price drop then maybe pick up towards the end of the PSP lifecycle.

No they don’t! Theres a few every now and then but nowhere near as many as xbox or wii’s adverts. I cant escape from motionplus adverts at the moment!
Sony needs to constantly bombard TV’s etc, tell everyone different reasons why to buy!
I think they need a relaunch pretty much.

similar scenario to me, my brother really wanted a 360, I however wasnt interested. I waited for my black box
So happy that I did.
Played the 360, yeah its good, but no-where near as good as the PS3.
Also, my brother is now considering a PS3 for X-mas, because he has seen how powerful it can be
*grins*
Anyway, these figures arent great, but Sony shall prevail!
Keep your heads high guys
