It looks like we’re only a small step away from an official Sony press release on this - but class it as a rumour just now. From next Monday, according to the link below, several European retailers will reduce the price of the PlayStation 3 to 299€ (including a game), with some already jumping the gun and some already at 249€.
The thread linked below also has ‘almost confirmation‘ that the price drop is to make way for the Slim, which will land at the end of August (currently the 30th) and retail for 399€. We’ve also heard that some retailers are ‘out of stock’ just now, and awaiting a new model. We’re just about to contact SCEE on this for a comment…
Update: SCEE have responded with “we don’t comment on rumour and speculation” as expected.
Tip: GAF.

Works out in UK at around £255 – Although better than £289.99 if they can ever find a way to get to £199 with any SKU either obsolete or slim they’ll sell themselves with no advertising needed

That for people with the British Pound too? £213? Big drop.

If this is true, and they can somehow get the PS3 in at £199.99 (even without a game) it would FLY.

A PS3 at £199.99.. would Sony be able to take the losses with all the added software sales? Such a drop would definitely increase demand – but would it increase it enough?

Couldn’t agree more at £199.99 there would be no stopping sales, especially as dare i say it christmas is just round the corner.

Agreed, £199 is the way to go. If they drop it to £259 (€299 ish), I honestly don’t see much of a change. £229 would be ok I guess, as long as it was a good deal, but £199 is definitely the best option as they would begin to fly off the shelves. However, with the PSPgo at £229, will Sony really go below that price? Also, the thread at Gaf suggests the Slim will go on sale at a higher price point than the current PS3, which again, will make no change. After people have bought the cheaper Phats, Sony will be back where they started; with a more expensive console.

finally I can see some light lol
It’s about time, even though the decrease isn’t HUGE, it could make a difference on sales. Might keep Mr Kotik at Activision happy, what his ruddy name is. He might be able to sell some more stock when MW2 comes out. lol
Great news though in all !

I have two suggestions for a hat to eat.
1. Nacho hat like the one in the Simpsons
Or the easier one!
2. A bowl hat made of cabbage!!

A friend of mine went to buy a PS3 the other day only to be told they had sold out so I guess they are awaiting newer models, a price drop would be great, I hear a lot of people saying they really want one but just cannot justify the price tag right now, with so many great games coming out, Uncharted 2 and GT5 just to name two this really should see the user base increase which can only be a good thing for all of us PS3 owners.

Sounds more likely to be £249, where did £199 come from?
Have to agree that £199 = Sell, £249 = slight increase in sales

i do agree, but you could go on forever saying if it was only cheaper by another £50 then you would sell more. £250 is a good price for a PS3, compare it with what you get on the xbox and it’s actually better value.
Sony just need to advertise this, but as usual are holding back because they are skint.

Havent really thought about it until today…but…how many ‘fat’ consoles are left to be sold? i mean, if there is only say 1,000,000 (for example), then the people waiting for the price drop wont have alot of stock to buy, they will have to end up getting the slim PS3 (after a few days of the fat consoles price drop sales) as its the only one being stocked in the shops, and that will cost the same amount as we have now…so we are back to square one!
What do you all think on that?
any idea on the amount of fat PS3’s left to sale?

SONY would want lots of unsold fat ones left in order to make the price drop actually worth it, not for the money, but for the install base…I would hope of figures around the 9+million mark world wide at least so it makes an impact on SONYS market share plans

I’d expect the price drop to happen near Christmas. MS might follow suit with a price drop of their own.

When you say the URL of the image, do you mean the URL of the page the cake is on? Sorry if the answer is a little obvious…

Does that make it cheaper than the new PSPGo? I know faced with a choice I would choose the PS3, so it could possibly affect PSPGo sales.
