Er, Did MCV Just Confirm The PS3 Slim?

Friday saved! Thanks, MCV.

PS3 Slim: keeping bloggers ticking over since mid-2009. Until now it has just been clippings from magazines, dodgy blurred screens from point of sale tills, leaked shots from production plants. Until now, because this Friday lunchtime UK industry trade magazine MCV has just, it appears, confirmed the PS3 Slim. “Sony is preparing to unveil its brand new PS3 Slim next Tuesday at the Gamescom show in Germany,” says the site, reporting on Microsoft’s readiness to react to anything Sony produce next week in terms of price cuts.

All I need now is a big fat cigar and a large brandy, and I’m set.

Thanks, Tuffcub.

  1. Any PS3 owners actually going to buy one? Sure, something new on the shelves will boost hardware sales but surely Sony aren’t expecting too many of us to replace our reliable phat systems?!

    • Well if my current phat PS3 breaks then I’ll probably go to a slim for the reduced price and nothing else.

      • liket that ‘phat’ with a PH. That’s why i’m not going to get a slim. didn’t get a slim PS2 either

    • Reliable?

Ive been through 3 of them in the last 3 months. I’m probably going to get the slim next.

      • What the hell you been buying?

Mines lasted 2 years and still going strong… (fingers crossed)

      • If that had happended to me i would have sold up and got a Spectrum +2 instead

      • iv had 2 ps3’s replaced in the past month, first my blu-ray drive went, then my second the bluetooth was dodgy because it use to cut out in games and that’s without the power save feature, now im fine, I love the customer service because they know what to say and they don’t send you to a million departments in india, soo annoying,

    • I’ll be buying one and so will many of my friends. Most of us have original 60gb launch models so we’re looking forward to a system that uses a lot less power, is quieter, generates less heat and takes up less space. I actually think there will be quite a few PS3 owners who will buy another PS3 or will trade their phat in for a slim.

      • Not me. I still have my launch day 60gb (with upgraded HDD) and Continuous Play (which I took out before they packed up taking new customers).

To be honest, my console sits under the TV pushed back in the cabinet with adequate air flow etc. Since you can only see the front of it anyway, I don’t feel the need for a smaller one. It’s also pretty quiet, I must have got lucky cos I’ve heard other launch ones that are much louder.

  2. I think I might buy one and give the old one to my mum and dad!

  3. Holy crap MCV leaked it? Well that was unexpected.

    • agreed, most of the time mcv just give out a load of rubbish with no evidence

  4. As long as the PS3slim is cheap, or the ‘fat’ ones drop in price, then the new product will be worth it to sony. If they try and sale the slim at current prices and do not drop the price of the fat, then it a pointless exercise in my eyes at trying to gain more users… the price is the problem, not the size of the thing!

If sony just want a quick buck, then releasing the slim at the fat price will make them some money as its cheaper to make… who knows, all guessing games.

    • I think sony MIGHT discontinue the phat ps3 to save costs as the new SKU(slim) will take over, and it will be rare to see the phat ps3’s in shops.

  5. We all knew it was going to get leaked at some point… I mean a reliable leak, and not some blurry pictures and such. Wonder how much it’s going to cost, and if there’ll be a price reduction on anything.

  6. if it comes out at a lower price point, has ps2 emulation as standard and i can take my current sata drive out and slap it in the new one.. hell yes ill buy the hell out of that. my parents keep moaning they want a blu-ray player so they can have this one.

well done MCV.. you finally made me go to your crummy site to watch you mess up.

    • Oh and Alex.. ill take one of those cigars but you can keep the brandy… i think a glass of Johnnie Walker blue with 2 lumps of ice will do me fine :D

    • I could be wrong but I think the current “phat” PS3 automatically formats any new hard drive you put in it. A mate of mine had to buy a new PS3 and couldn’t keep his saved games etc. because of this. This would mean putting your sata in would result in all of your data being wiped.

Hopefully such a problem will be rectified with the new model.

      • @AcidCrashX
Sony are actually developing ps2 emulation using the cell cpu, so there will be no hardware that plays ps2 games, sony MIGHT release a firmware update in conjuction with the slim to play ps2 games,

        @walkerD
it formats because it’s a security feature, so then people can’t put their own iso’s on the hdd then start playing them. so you will have to back up your data to put the current sata hdd into the sku.

  7. If that is real, then they have caused the biggest leak of the year in playstation terms. But still, how much will it cost when it’s released, or to make it?

  8. My poor sombrero… oh well, i’ll set up the camera when i get home, and start googling for sombrero recipes….

  9. I’m expecting my 60 giger to conk out on me anytime now. The fan is getting insufferably louder and louder with each passing day. So I think I’ll do the same as I did last generation when my big PS2 kicked the bucket, and purchase a slim.

It’s a joke that Sony can’t make reliable machines, especially when they cost so much. I mean you don’t see Sky boxes breaking after a couple of years and they’re used far more intensively than Playstations. DVD players too. I know the hardware isn’t as sophisticated but seriously, when you’re in a market (and such a small one) it’s a joke that you can get away with releasing a product with such a ludicrously small shelf life.

    • Do a back up, when mine went I lost everything.

    • My Dads now on his fourth Sky HD box and third Sky box.

      • Sky boxes particularly the Sky+HD ones are the most unreliable pieces of crap known to man

I’ve had Sky+HD since launch (went to V+ for a year and back again) and I’ve been lucky, but the internet is alive with stories about them always breaking down, and the new EPG is supposed to make things worse, (thank heavens its not been forced on me yet)

  10. Well if it’s confirmed now, what rumours and gossip can we comment on.

How about FW3.0 or backward compatibility?

    • I think FW 3.0 will be out in conjunction with the new sku, hope it contains software emulation, i also hope that the os memory footprint goes smaller, and why can’t sony improve the web browser, or cant they put firefox on the ps3 because it’s open source. I want full keyboard compatibility with the browser, like ctrl+c and ctrl+v,

  11. Poor old Sony can never catch a break can they? Heres hoping they have a trick up their sleeve.

    • if they stopped fannying about and just did things instead of waiting for ’special’ days then they wouldnt have to worry about leaks.lol

Sony knew damm well they were going to release a slim for the xmas period, the public expect something to happen (by the looks of the sales figures), as soooo many rumors float about. so instead of messing about, they should of built the units, boxed them up, slapped a price reduction label on old units, and rolled out the slims…just like they would if it was a TV. No- maybes, no- we will make announcements soon, no- we have lots of new things coming. Just let the public know a new model/product is coming in the same month it is going to be released. problem solved – no leak…

Its not as if sony need hype to sale a slimmer version of a PS3, if it was a PS4 then the rumor mill, and all the if’s but’s and maybe would be worth it.

    • Sony was trying to keep quiet so as to keep selling the console. Once they say “We’re dropping the price” then sales up to that date are diminished.

      • Yea, but they didnt need to leave that big a gap in sales…they just needed to (for example)announce:

Monday 3rd Aug, Press release – New PS3slim available on Monday 17th Aug. Priced at £199.99. Older models will be reduced to £149.99.

Of course my pricing is over the top, but im just using those easy figures for an example.lol

  12. The price of the PS3 Slim, and price of the standard models after, will have a MASSIVE impact on sales. Sony REALLY need a £200 price tag AT LEAST for the large models, with £230 for the slim. Otherwise, Microsoft’s Elite will be the ’shopper-mum’s’ weapon of choice.

  13. I rock. Again. :) Cant see myself upgrading TBH, I’m quite partial to chunky things.

    • Chubby chaser eh?

      • I prefer the phrase “stocky” or “rugby build”, so does my husband, the big lardbucket. Erm, i mean, chunky chap.

  14. http://www.mcvuk.com/news/35356/PS3-stock-dries-up-price-cut-due-September

This dude has a good take on things that might be true (another might):

    Sounds familiar….
posted by Leemondo Yesterday at 12:57 pm

This all sounds a little familiar to me. As an experienced games retailer, I remember when Sony released the PSP Slim and Lite – it was rumoured for ages but nobody at Sony would confirm it’s existence. Then, two or three months before S+L launched, the supply of PSP Base Packs just vanished. You couldn’t source them for love nor money.

This episode is feeling very deja vu. Either a) Sony are going to announce and quickly launch the much-rumored PS3 Slim, or b) they are holding back on stock for a price drop. Reason b obviously makes sense, we all know Sony have a track-record of skewing sales figures to work in their favour (not saying both Nintendo and Microsoft are any better!!), but by slowing down supply now, dropping the price, then flooding the market with lower price SKU’s, Sony will see a huge increase in console sales, so they can boast “PS3 sales up 400% in September”. It’s simply intelligent marketing.

The other reason – over the next 2-3 weeks in the middle of Summer Holidays, if people can’t find PS3’s in stock, they will automatically assume that it is because they are hugely popular, which will only serve to increase demand when the product is back in stock AND with a lower price point.

Hats off to Sony, they managed to manufacture SOME demand for the PSP a few years ago, right when the DS Lite was kicking the life out of it. If it worked then, why not try now?

    • Er no.. if thwey cant buy a PS3 they’ll buy a Wii or Xbox..

      • The gap will only be a week or 2 im guessing, not months on end. i know if i went to the shop looking for a PS3, and it was out of stock, id wait a few weeks. i wouldnt just throw money at a wii/360. its not like they have ran out of your favorite beef flavor crisps so you get salt and vinger is it…

  15. Wouldn’t it be amazing if Sony were leaking the slim stuff out on purpose as a viral campaign. People think Sony can’t keep stories under wraps, but really they were leaking false info all along. Expect a price drop and multi-coloured PS3s! *floats off into dreamland*
