America, it seems, likes to buy games featuring rugby players in body armour and anything on the Wii. Oh, and lots and lots of Nintendo DS consoles, and whilst there’s no doubt already a Sony press release proclaiming that the ‘PlayStation Brand’ shifted nearly 350,000 units in July, the reality is that the PlayStation 3 sold just 122,000 against the 360′s 203,000 and the Wii’s 252,000. Still, no doubt everyone’s waiting to see what that PS3 Slim‘s all about, eh? Here’s the hardware figures for America in July, courtesy of NPD (via NeoGAF).

  • PlayStation 2 108K
  • PlayStation 3 121.8K
  • PSP 122.8K
  • Xbox 360 202.9K
  • Wii 252.5K
  • Nintendo DS 538.9K

And the software? Well, apart from the aforementioned American Football thing NCAA Football 10 the only other non-Nintendo thing in there is the 360 version of Fight Night Round 4. I’m personally a big fan of Nintendo and loved Mario Kart and Pokemon, but come on guys, is there really nothing else out there worth buying?  Sales are massively down overall as the credit crunch continues to bite, this is the fifth consecutive month of the downward slope bringing year-to-date sales to $8.16 billion, 14% down from the same time period last year.  The Xbox 360 is the only console showing a unit sales increase year-to-date

  • Wii SPORTS RESORT W/ WII MOTION PLUS (WII) 508.2K
  • NCAA FOOTBALL 10 (360) 376.5K
  • NCAA FOOTBALL 10 (PS3) 237.4K
  • WII FIT W/ BALANCE BOARD* (WII) 164.3K
  • MARIO KART W/ WHEEL (WII) 156.6K
  • MARIO KART DS (NDS) 132.2K
  • POKEMON PLATINUM VERSION (NDS) 116.4K
  • FIGHT NIGHT ROUND 4 (360) 116.4K
  • NEW SUPER MARIO BROS (NDS) 101.8K
  • EA SPORTS ACTIVE BUNDLE (WII) 96.8K

So, yeah, we’ll wait for the inevitable “it’s OK we don’t mind really” press releases coming through this morning and sit back and enjoy a lovely cup of coffee before Friday starts properly and everyone kicks into gear with some more PS3 Slim stories to pad out the fact that pre-Cologne there’s not really that much worth talking about.  Liam’s snoring, Peter’s working on some secret project and Chris is milking the cows.  It’s blissful.  Now, pass me my Wii Remote, I’ve got some Frizbees to throw.

  1. Judging by how many units sold ONLY in America is stupid. The Americans should learn that the world is bigger than America.

    • Er, they’re American figures, what else do you want them to say?

      • lol

      • Hey i resent that!

  2. No suprise to see Wii Sports Resort there, effing awesome game for the Wii :) Also quite impressive numbers for Wii Sports Resort, as it was released in the end of July. But looking at July, the only decent PS3/Xbox 360 retail game was Call of Juarez (30th june counts as July :P), but thank god for digital games like BF 1943, Splosion Man, Shatter and FP :)

    • Only 2 of those downloadable titles actually worked.

      • Yeah I guess mentioning FP was a stretch, but wasn’t BF1943 up and running properly during July.

      • It still isn’t working for a sizable amount of people now, although dome people are still reporting the same silent mic problem with FP

      • *some

        duh… iPhone

      • Sad :/

  3. 2007? Didnt realise fight night 4 and ncaa 10 were out that long ago ;)

    • Yeah I was just thinking that

  4. There appears to be so much riding on the PS3Slim that if there is just one slight thing wrong, either the price being above £199.99 or it just looking a bit funny, then Sony will just fade from the front line. That isn’t the case of course but, they really do need to pull the rabbit out of the hat if only to help themselves out.

The attraction of the Wii isn’t just about standing there waggling stuff, it’s games that focus on fun not just polygons, teraflops, streaming massive amounts of data, and other such stuff, but instead providing an experience you can share with others and have a great time whilst doings so.

I coulnt care less for graphical superiority, it’s just leaving me feeling slightly hollow, unfulfilled and disillusioned about gaming, in the mean time Nintendo are giving the vast majority of people what they want, including an amazing local multiplayer experience in practically every single quality release.

  5. The wii has a bigger audience, the wii fit and sports (games) are always going to be top as they come with the balance board and wii motion+. I have the balance board but i use it for sean whites snow boarding, not for fitness (as thats why i go down the gym?!?! how people think a computer game can make you fit is beyond me???). And of course this is a US only account of things. I bet the Japan version looks alot different. Really the EU figures should be the ones to watch. No loyalty for a US model (360) or a E.Asia model (PS3/wii) just what people think about the system…

  6. Exactly how many people are still buying wii fit, wii sports and pokemon? Oh well, expect that to change in november, when modern warfare 2 comes out, which won’t be surprising.
