In an entry on the EU Blog, Sony has confirmed that the Platinum range of Playstation 3 games has been extended with four more titles. Joining the elite group:
Killzone 2
Metal Gear Solid 4
Resistance 2
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
You will soon find these gaming treats on a shelf near you, retailing at £19.99 / €29.99.
Also, Amazon are currently listing GTA IV Platinum for an October release.

Got my platinum MGS about 2 or 3 months ago. SCEE all over it, and the good old BBFC 15. Dunno why news of it is only just surfacing.

@pax-KZ2 is one of those games that will only work from a back-up…if you can get hold of your old unit, you can put ur old HDD in and then backup.
These plat games will go nice in slim bundles over xmas i bet!

Your old HDD won’t work in a new ps3, found that out the hard way.

I had replaced my HD in the PS3 and that PS3 was fried by lightning..
When I received my replacement PS3 and replaced the HD it would not start from it and I had to reformat it.
So I reformatted it after googleing the error… and found out you first should backup with the old PS3.. in this case I was not able to..
(the HD is doing fine so it was not fried…)
I think the PS3 put’s an unique id on the disc and if that does not match it will not use it..

Sad…. I know but Id be more open to buying platinum if they changed the colour of the case. Its ‘orrible! The cover could be the same. I just want clear cases!

Do you have your games front facing?
Cos there isn’t even a hint of yellow on the spines, its a grey/silver colour. Same as the boxes, which are grey as opposed to clear.
Honestly, its not that bad when in storage. Its just a bit fugly when you want to actually play the game.
Anyway, hopefully they’ll get the redesigned cover art going for the next bout of platinums…

Ive bought 1 or 2 for the ps1 and 2. I bought drakes platinum from argos. It was an impulse when i got my new tv. The picture didnt show it was platinum so i thought id get lucky. Decided to take it as i wanted to play it in all its glory. Shame it ruins the ‘playstation’ shelf of my dvd stand. Even contemplated buying a blank case off ebay! Hah

What sort of visual cue do you suggest using (that’s easy to see from afar)? I don’t have an answer right now but am left wondering. It needs to be something that contrasts with the non-platinum titles and can be quickly recognised from 10-15 foot away (eg. wandering around a store/shop).

Why should they be in contrast? I mean like “bajere” says when they are going platinum we already can buy the original for cheap.
Why not put the original box in a cheap-rack so people know every game on the yellow space is platinum..

sorry forgot: if the Yellow bar is printed on the cover and not on the box you can download Resistance 2 cover from the playstation blog and print it..

just place in a normal box, but put in a shelf space with platinum on them…bit like the 2 for 1 red and yellow shelving strips at ASDA…

Yeah I never got one before for the ps2 for the simple reson that it would annoy me that it had a different ( awfully different ) case. Meh Im weird like that but Im sure I am not the only one.
If it wasn’t so horrible and cheap looking I would think about getting a platinum edition but I have 3/4 of the above anyway =]

I liked the original better, but your mileage may vary. A friend of mine likes better Pacific Rift. Try the PSN demo to check it out. Personally, I found Pacific Rift a bit more difficult than Motorstorm, and not in a challenging way, but in a bad way

Whoa, both Killzone 2, Pacific Rift and Resistance 2 are already platinum in europe? My, with the Slim selling like hot bread, this holidays season looks good for Sony with the winning combination of not so expensive games + less expensive console.

Yeah, I said before that I think that Q3 2009 will be the point at which Sony start to see their popularity begin to climb back up. Like you say, with cheaper console and cheaper games, it’s bound to bring some much-needed revenue for SONY. Not to mention what the recent batch of amazing exclusive games will do for them.

At a guess, not all vendors will have a cheap-shelf and each individual title needs a visual cue to show that it’s a platinum title. From stores to online shops with smaller thumbnails. Don’t get me wrong, the yellow /is/ overpowering but I’m also at a loss as what to suggest.

Like the big MGS statues made from cardboard Sony could also sent the retailers some yellow stripes of plastic with says Platinum or a nice cardboard stand for the platinum games with some extra ads on the sides of thes stands..
Or just let the retailer be creative with some yellow paper/tape etc if they do not have the place to put the cardboard versions or the stripes do not fit their racks….
I still do not understand why they should be different…
(well I do start to get it now as many people do not want the cheap looking versions maybe Sony is hoping people buy more of the expensive stuff if they keep the cheap stuff looking like well… cheap stuff..)

It still doesn’t cover the online situation. I hate to say it, but altering existing artwork (reduce, crop, add yellow borders, etc) is probably very simple compared to going down the “you need a new stand and here it is, route”. It’s then got everything covered both online and offline. Also, interesting differentiator you mention about them looking cheap on purpose.

I only have 1 platinum game – Uncharted – and it looks awful compared to the rest of my cases so I won’t be making the same mistake twice. I’d rather pick up a pre-owned copy of the original games.

Don’t know, but what with Christmas coming and Killzone being such a vital game for the PS3, i’d imagine it’s money based.
Plus, don’t forget the criteria for going Platinum is having sold over 400,000 copies which Killzone achieved probably within the first few months.
