Reading back through the recent “Fallout 3″ articles at The Sixth Axis, I am guessing that the reason for the information was released over a long duration was to avoid having to announce that the testing/quality assurance process of the re-released title (including the introduction of the downloadable content & PS3 Trophy support) was not going as well as intended.

It’s OK… there was no need for the explanation you provided, but thank you for your time.

I explained how an embargo works, and how the system works. The reason for spreading them is that it simply keeps focus on the game for longer. You have one piece of information come out at one time, and another come out at another time. They get two stories on Fallout, it keeps it in the public mind for longer. Another example would be Borderlands, they’ve had press come every two weeks or so with a two week embargo. That means that they get a new story about Borderlands every two weeks and keeps PR for the game flowing well.

Joystiq going earlier could be that they simply had a different embargo to get an exclusive on the information. If I’ve missed anything I really don’t know what you’re asking.

You are all reading more into my initial post than I intended.

I was asking if the reason for the delay in releasing the information was known. So far the responses have tried to educate me on how press releases are timed, but only providing best guesses at the reason to why this was required.

Joystiq also seems to have had a similar embargo, but they chose to release the details a few hours early; maybe I should ask there instead… although, if a genuinely innocent question meets with a similar response perhaps I should not bother. It just seems odd to release the information in two parts; why not all at once… on 17 September? I do not see the gain for a two-step approach, in this case.

My mention of whether any advance copies or promotional items were available also seems to have been taken like a personal attack on nofi.

Sorry if you are offended on his behalf.

This game hasbeen gathering dust for months now, just doesnt float my boat…very buggy/glitchy and quite a bore walking around all over the place without really doing much but hoarding items.

Will pick it back up one day though, doubtful to be until 2010 though with all the other great stuff coming our way.

DLC is so far out of my mind for thisgame its like a little speck of dust on my radar.

I really don’t know what you’re on about. Sometimes websites are given information which has to be withheld until a specific time and date for any number of reasons. Everyone knew that the DLC and GOTY was coming to the PS3, it’s just the cost and specific date. This could be withheld for any number of reasons, an example being to prevent the damage of sales. If a website/publication leaked the date of the GOTY edition, it would put people off buying the regular edition. Same as the PS3 Slim – if it had been outright confirmed as coming on a specific date early on it would have hurt sales of the existing models. As the writer/administrator of a news website you should be fully aware of these types of things.

As for suggesting there were incentives involved, it’s quite a silly accusation. If a developer or publisher provides a site with this information it’s just a matter of courtesy and trust that prevents the site from leaking it. We all know how damaging leaks can be.

An embargo means that the publisher won’t let a media outlet report on them officially. While not always a legally binding document it tends to put you significantly in the publishers/PR company’s bad books if you break it. These are imposed for a number of reasons, from stopping secrets coming out early to ensuring that press arrives at the correct time for a particular title. It may not be that you’re offered anything other than a good working relationship for keeping something under embargo.

I’m not sure what you don’t understand – the release dates and pricing for the DLC was embargoed, worldwide, until the time and date I said. That’s how these things sometimes work.

Sorry, I was not ‘implying’ anything. I know you have received other promotional items before; you have reported on these before here at The Sixth Axis.

No, I did not include any more information than I had available at the time of writing at 1upGamers.com, but I did not revisit the thread as I am not a fan of what I have seen of “Fallout 3″. My Collector’s Edition remains as sealed as it was when I bought it in GAME’s sale last December. If I ever run out of something to play, it is there for emergencies, or for trading with somebody for a game I favour more.

I was just curious [some would say I was like that anyway] as to why the additional information was retained. Why the big secret?

Haha, indeed it is. This, Fifa 10 and Uncharted 2 are what I want, but I think I’ll just get Fifa.
Fallout 3 is the best game on PS3 in my view, so you should understand I’m hyped that all this contents on the way.

I think that it doesn’t matter which magazine, website, retailer calls something their Game of The Year, that the publisher will then release a GoTY edition.

With so many print and online magazines around there’ll be quite a few ‘games of the year’.

I guess it will say on the back of the box whose particular opinion they used to claim the accolade…
