‘Starhawk’ Entering Next Phase

‘Starhawk’, the sequel to Warhawk, starting to take shape?

As we mentioned earlier in the year the team behind PS3 exclusive Warhawk are hard at work on a new project, thought to its sequel, Warhawk is probably my favourite game of all time. Around the same time these rumours leaked Sony trademarked ‘Starhawk’ so it probably doesn’t take a genius to work out that is the project which the new team at Lightbox Interactive are working on. I’m an avid follower on Twitter of Dylan Jobe the Studio Director over at Lightbox and am forever in hope that he’ll make a schoolboy error and let something slip, but unfortunately for me he hasn’t slipped up yet releasing any details at all on the project.

What he has said throughout this early development process is that he’s been meeting regular deadlines for milestone builds to present to Sony’s Santa Monica studios, but last night the team appear to have reached a key point in ‘Starhawks’ early development as he Tweeted “Getting my thoughts in order for next week — Another milestone. It’s really great to see it take shape! But I think the most exciting thing is that we’re going to be starting our focused, internal playtests very soon!! I call them “Hate-Sessions”. It’s when everyone in the studio plays the game and gets to bash on the stuff they don’t like, and we only say the stuff we don’t like. I don’t care about what we’re doing well, only about fixing the bad systems or interactions. I know it may seem odd and overly simple but it works for us.”

Although there’s not too much substantial to go on, I’m practically the most excited person in the world for any news whatsoever on the sequel and am pleased to hear it reach a stage where they can internally play it – rip it to pieces and improve on what they’ve done so far. Once this phase is out the way I’m hoping they let a screenie or even a movie leak and then on to closed beta testing where I hope my ridiculous amount of hours spent in Warhawk don’t go unnoticed, please!

  1. I saw that too, got me excited also. It’ll be interesting o see a single screen.
Also reminds me, we still need o set up a Warkawk meet, I found someone who can host 12 people.

    • :) ready when you are….

      • 7pm on the 30th good for you?

      • hmmm its a bit far away to know what im doing yet, but i can probably make sure ive got nothing going on now i ahve a date in mind. Where do you want to discuss game details.. on the forum thread?

      • Yeah, I’m making a TSA meets as soon as I get a lil help.

      • I love warhawk but haven’t been on it for the best part of a year. Maybe we could get a boot camp/refresher game going on every now and then, encourage some tsa members to pick up the title?

      • just rediscovered Warhawk – defo my top PS3 game yet. noobs can get by on servers with less players, its not too hard to get into still I reckon, esp as you can go ‘off piste’ on a zone mission etc.

  2. omg omg omg. This is possibly my most anticipated game currently in development. i would give up buying games for the coming months if it meant this were to come sooner. you’re not alone in your excitement cc

    • I’ve told you a million times, do not exaggerate.

      • *looks sheepish* sorry

  3. Spotted that tweet this morning too, glad it’s coming together, even if he can’t tell us anything at all.

  4. this might get interesting =D

  5. Holy holy holy shit, cc_star explodes!

  6. Have been considering getting round to purchasing Warhawk for while but since I heard about this earlier in the year I’ve been more hesitant. I didn’t want to buy Warhawk, have all the players migrate over to the sequel and leave the servers empty enough for them to be closed down, as this obviously renders any multiplayer-only title useless.

    • I wouldn’t expect this to be shown too much until next year, maybe as late as june’s E3, a release could then be late 2010 or even early 2011.

So it’s up to you – It really is a fantastic online game, IMO the best, but it isn’t for everybody as the learning curve is quite steep, and as it’s been active for over 2 years now it’s fair to say that people still playing it are experienced, although I seem to play with/against loads of people who are either useless or noobs.

      • There’s no need to call me useless or a noob!

      • LOL @ CC.

All you play is Warhawk and Disney Sing it ! (which he claims is his daughters’)pfft !   ;)

  7. Sounds interesting. I wish I had a job there. Testing the game looking for flaws with the code monkeys would be great :)

  8. Nooooo. I just know I’m going to be disappointed with any sequal to Warhawk. I’d agree and say its my favourite game of this gen of consoles. I know I’ll expect too much of it. Besides I’ve never really got on with the expansion packs and normally try and avoid the servers hosting the new levels. I think Warhawk should be left alone forever and then, maybe, just maybe, in about 10 years I’ll finally reach General rank.

  9. They should rename it Terrahawks! I wonder what happened to my Sergeant Major Zero action figure?

    • I loved Terrahawks, but Zelda scared the hell out of me.

Just trying to remember if anyone ever won the game of naughts & crosses – gonna have to hit YouTube I think

    • Blast from the past. Used to love that show. And yeah Zelda scared the crap out of me too.

  10. Lightbox? i thought it was Incognito?

    • ah, a quick Google search tells me that its formed from former Incognito members…

  11. My youngest son loves Warhawk, he plays it more than any other game and he squeals with delight just at the prospect of Starhawk… If anyone has any good tips about getting pistol kills for Warhawk please pass them on as it’s the only Bandit badge he’s yet to get!
Can’t wait to see screens or hear more about this sequel!!

  12. This is great Warhawk was a brilliant online game. I never play it anymore i don’t know why… I don’t think i ever had lag through all the time i played it which was amazing.

  13. Tis interesting to see how Starhawk works, will it be like colony wars or Warhawk in Space?! I can’t wait!!

  14. Sounds like it has potential, but I never actually played Warhawk so I’m not too sure what too expect.
Seems an interesting game though. :)

    • It was 32 players online with no lag. Most of the time it’s like an offline game and you don’t realise it’s online. Good game modes and weapons made it good. Oh and great maps and dlc :) Go Warhawk!

      • Is it online only? I’ve seen screenshots of 4 players on one console so was wondering if there is offline multiplayer.

      • Split Screen off AND online, i suppose i should have said multiplayer only. I picked it up for a mates birthday for £2.99 in Gamestation pre – owned he thought i spent loads (don’t tell him)

  15. Strange… they tweet this near TGS

    • Nah – coincidence only
It’s a US project, and its a shooter – this would be very small news in Japan

He often Tweets about milestone builds but this is the 1st time he’s added anything to it
