The game isn’t even on our shelves yet but apparently they have already scheduled DLC for the early part of 2010. Infinity Ward has already stated that they will be releasing 2 Map Packs for the game, which will be available to those of you with a 360 before anyone else, but whether this is what the 2010 DLC will be, we don’t know…yet.
The content of downloadable variety was hinted at when a promotional pack of the energy drink ‘Monster’, which has teamed up with MW2, stated:
Planned release Spring 2010
4 Months (ish) from game release and you will apparently have some new maps to sink your commando knife into.

why don’t they add the maps to the game, since they are deciding to up the price on release?
Bunch of money grabbing bottom wipes. Map Pacls not for me this time round.

The map packs are planned for a release which could mean that they will be working on them after release. I still won’t be buying any. Never do by map packs as I think they are pointless. 8 quid for crappy maps. No thanks.

To be honest I loved Killzone, bought the two first map packs and personally feel ripped off. Shame really, that put me off buying map packs from now on.

i just don’t get why we should pay for these map packs(even tho i have cod4 DLC(redeem-code)), make it free and it will be downloaded a lot more than before.

Glad I’m gonna get it for PC. I wouldn’t spend a dime on some maps that could have easily been in the game.

£5 says that some of the maps are ‘classic maps’ from previous CODs. A further £5 says that at least one of the maps will be from COD4.

Give me that money now!
They confirmed there will not be any ‘classic’ maps in this, due to the change in speed and size of the gameplay or something.

One more reason to not buy the game, imo… If you dont buy it, they wont do it.

Why does the 360 get them first?!

MS and activision struck up a deal. Hence the 360 bundle – http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2009/09/16/xbox-360-bags-modern-warfare-2-bundle/

bit naughty really when they could of added it to the game! in all fairness the more i hear about this game the more pissed off i get. it looks good, but not that good!
The new Battle Field game and Dragon Rising FPS’s look more fun and look to have more to offer imo. (vehicles, destructible environments, massive open battle area, tactical assaults etc) ill be leaving MW2 until it hits the bargain bin and ill be getting these other 2 instead!

How is it a bit naughty? Lots of titles don’t go for 4-ish months after release without having some DLC on the store to buy. Red Faction, for example, has had two lots of premium DLC released within 4 month of release.

yea i know, lots of people do it, but i still think its a bit off. Map packs are becoming the norm, but i fear it will slowly slide into a bad situation: ie MW3, 4maps on disk, 10 extra ones + more guns on DLC. (using MW as an example) Bit over the top maybe, but the point im trying to make is that company’s will end up putting out games that give us less bang for our buck unless we spend even more on the DLC…

Just because lots of companies do it, doesn’t mean it inst naughty.. Its a slippery slope that we all saw coming, although I didn’t think it would slip quite so quickly. IMO, its only a matter of time, before you only get the core engine on the disk and the single player levels and everything else are bought as DLC..

I disagree, I’m fine with mappacks. There’s only a finite amount of development time before the game comes out, so why not add more maps post-release? Surely that’s being a good developer and supporting your product?

@Severn2j-
I hope that day never comes, but i feel the same way mate. £40 for the disk and single player stuff, then £20-£30 for the DLC to do everything else…

Map packs are also a tool that devs use to extend the life of a game after release and stop people trading the game in.
I’ve got no problem with map packs. (Maybe having been a programmer all my working life colours my opinion.) To be honest I don’t mind having a reasonable proportion of the game as optional DLC. If I want it, I can get it. If not, then I haven’t paid for something I’ll never use.
DLC may be helping keep the price of games down. I’d say I’m still getting value for money out of the game that comes on disc. I haven’t played a game yet where I’ve felt they only shipped half of it on the disc.
Obviously enough people are paying for the DLC and it has enough advantages for the devs/pubs to make the business model worthwhile. If it gets to the point where not enough game is on the disc, hopefully reviews and previews, like TSA’s own, will pick up on it and you will just simply have the option of not buying the game. Vote with your wallets if you think it’s gone too far. We know people like Kotick are focused on revenue, as is their job, so hit them where it hurts if they start taking the piss.

Batman: Arkham Asylum did this, and it was great.
But this is Activision, so no, they will not be free.

Yeah it’s good when some companies throw in some free DLC as well as some paid for. Burnout Paradise was another game that benefited from this strategy.

It annoys me when they plan on releasing what is in my opinion an unfinished game. Just release them on the disc!

I wouldn’t say it’s unfinished. It doesn’t effect the SP so it’s an optional thing. KZ2 did the same in the same time frame, and they have released loads of DLC

Well no, it’s not strictly unfinished… but you’re not getting the whole thing.

How so? What if the maps aren’t done yet? They only have finite developers and hours.

All I mean is it bugs me when developers plan on releasing more stuff for the game… I’d prefer it if it was all there from the start.

Isn’t MW2 £30 or so on the PC? Weird how the PC gaming community won’t tolerate such charges for initial releases and DLC. Appreciate this particular DLC (for the consoles) might actually be free but ya know what I mean.
mynameisblair | 01/10/2009 16:30

They “won’t tolerate” this because they can easily get almost identical user-made maps for free.

Also, Piracy is much more rampant on the PC, so if they pulled the same stunt there, people would just torrent it instead..

So looks like we’ll all be dishing out some more hard earned cash for these map packs only a few month into having the game. I must admit though, their strategy is a good one at that. if this, aswell as the price hike for the game doesnt give them the profit margins they want then, well, oh dear…

Im willing to bet, the maps will just be copied from COD4 with a £10 price tag. Still, i reckon this will be the best selling game ever!

it can’t be the best selling game ever. Wii sports has that title with over 50 million sales but thats cheating since it comes with the Wii

Not only will I not be downloading these DLC’s, I wont even buy the game itself. They could easily put the maps in the game form the start, but they just insist on taking more gamer’s money. Its a shame some will actually buy the game and all DLC that will come out for it.
