More PSP 2 Rumours [30]
Sony Dodge PSP 2 [19]

I’ve not heard of BrightSideOfNews before, but when a site runs with the headline: “Sony PSP2 arriving in 2010, features PowerVR SGX543 graphics” it’s worth taking note.  In the article, which we’re marking as a rumour, they claim that the PSPgo is merely a stop-gap for what they’re calling the PSP2, which will be powered by a PowerVR SGX543 graphics chip.  The site says that “Sony begun work on PSP2 back in 2008″ and “unofficially announced the selection of graphics hardware” presumably referring to this press release from ImgTec.

And if the sources are to be believed, the PSP2 will be one heck of a visual powerhouse.  “According to the sources close to heart of the company,” says BrightSideOfNews, “the SGX543 for PlayStation Portable 2 can reach theoretical performance of desktop graphics cards released during this year.” They continue, “Sony could go with quad-core setup at 400MHz, paired with a dual-core CPU based on ARM Cortex architecture. This would put Sony direct in line against Tegra-powered Nintendo DS2, PowerVR-based Apple’s iPhone 4G and Palm Pre2.”

Nintendo DS2, iPhone 4G?  Am I really that far out of the loop?  “We also learned of the PSP2 planned release date, but in order to protect our sources, we’ll keep that information for another story,” concludes the site. “Let’s just say it is within the next 12 months.”

  1. Meh. I’m not convinced. At all.
The idea does excite me though, so I’ll enjoy thinking it’s true for the next five minutes.

    • I certainly sounds alittle convincing with all of the fancy specs, but didn’t Sony plan to put the cell in the PSP2? I swear I saw that on one of their Cell roadmap diagrams ages ago.

      • *It certainly

      • Not sure you could get the power for the number of cores in a cell.

  2. If they can get a quad core in a handheld without it bursting in to flames due to the heat I shall eat my proverbial hat. What a load of poo.

    • Well the new ARM Cortex-A9 is designed to go up to 2Ghz per core and currently supports up to four cores (although they’re hoping to build it up to 8). Using the new OMAP4 parts (a chipset designed to run in mobile environments) they could support multicore at 1GHz right now, so given the kind of set up they’re discussing I think it’s totally possible, but I wouldn’t expect to see it next year, the ARM stuff hasn’t started shipping yet and it’s far too close to the PSPGo! anyway. Given these factors I’d say holiday 2011.

      • Agree! Holiday 2011 makes a lot more sense. I havent YET purchased a PSPgo so this is very interesting, although i shall still get a PSPgo. Seems unlikely they would put realease’ that close to eachother.

  3. I can exclusivly reveal to TSA that there will be a slimmer PSP 2 in 2013, a slightly revised PSP 2 in 2014 and a final redesign in 2015 that will not be compatible with any of your previously purchased software.

    • You could be so right.

      • i d say

  4. yeah!!!! priced at only 600 effin QUID!!!!

  5. If all this new tech actually does comes out next year, then 2010 is going to be a bumper year…and expensive!!! ;)

  6. The guys behind God of War on the psp have been advertising for people to work on an unannounced console which could well be a psp2. I fully expect the psp2 to be download only like the pspgo but with the normal technical improvments and 2nd analogue stick. If you want your psp2 to be backwards compatible then I suggest you stop buying UMDs.

I’d be very suprised if it was released next year. Maybe it’ll be unveiled at E3 and then laucnhed in Japan for christmas but 2011 sounds more realistic as the pspgo isn’t even out in Japan yet.

    • No, thats supposedly the Wii 2 since they didn’t mention working on the Wii but saying they are working on all next-gen sytem :)
dont care for the Wii at all though, not until a 2D goddamn Metroid

  7. Actually they’re just repeating the story that appeared on Eurogamer’s Spanish site back in July:
    http://translate.google.com/translate?prev=hp&hl=es&js=n&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.eurogamer.es%2Farticles%2Fcaracteristicas-graficas-de-la-psp2&sl=es&tl=en&history_state0=

And then “dressing it up” with DS2, 4G and Pre2 speculation/fiction.

    • Actually thinking about it the Pre 2 stuff is particularly silly, the Pre’s only just come out. The 4G comment is also silly, the first 4G network is aimed to be rolled out in Japan only next year, and it’ll probably be extremely limited. However 4G is awesome, so I hope that roll-out is a success (although some of it is insane, getting a data rate of 100Mbp/s between any two points in the world just isn’t going to happen any time soon).

      • Agreed. And if cars are anything to go by, there’ll be an iPhone 3GSi next year anyway. :)

      • Not sure what’s left to go into the iPhone at this point though. The camera doesn’t suck any more does it? Does it actually take video now?

      • I think ’4g’ only means ‘next iphone’. It will be presented in summer 2010.
Actually I hope to see some ‘game iPhone’ with buttons and PSP graphic power.

      • @Raen, yeah the 3GS does take video now.

      • Oh good, so that only puts Apple around 7/8 years behind the curve?

  8. PSP2, DS2, iPhone 4G, Pre2, Game&Watch2010, Toaster 2.0 and Super Hand Fan Turbo. It’s pretty easy to just make up new versions of existing tech and because the original exists, people seem far less sceptical of the new one, even without evidence

  9. This will sell lots regardless of the fact the PSPGo just arrived so long as it has TWO analogue sticks. I mean seriously, this thing (thereotically) would have the graphics of the original Xbox right? In portable form. PORTABLE. Sure its capitalism at its finest… but its pretty, and that’s what matters, right?!

  10. And the Batteries will last for minutes and minutes on end :D

    • 1 min?

      • I’d say 1 min & 29 seconds
