And other games, apparently.

CVG is reporting that a sequel to Rare’s Xbox 360 launch platformer Kameo has been cancelled due to a shift of emphasis towards Natal. According to the site, the recent restructuring at Microsoft has seen the canning of “more than one traditional franchise sequel” although Kameo 2 is the only one named.

Rare, who we assume would have been behind the second in the series, is one of Natal’s main developers right now, so that makes a lot of sense, but I’m at a loss as to what else was secretly in development.

Microsoft’s position on the refocus was made clear earlier in the year.  “The company is reviewing the current composition of its development teams and there is the possibility that a small number of current positions could be lost as a result of these changes,” said a statement from the American giant.

  1. So basically… “Natal will give us more money so tough luck.”

    • That’s what Nintendo did. Worked like a treat.

      • it has been working, beginning to look like that bubble may just have sprung a leak, not quite ready to burst yet.

    • “Natal will give us more money so tough luck.”

Microsoft might be in for a shock when Natal is released if they really think that’s the case :)

      • i agree there i wonder the price point…

    • Time will tell if that decision bites them in the backside (to put it politely!!) ;)

  2. Depressing that good original games will get cancelled for waggling shovelware.

Can’t wait for Dance party: Natal Dance, though!

    • Ante Natal game should be interesting too. I seriously can’t see Natal being a hit at all.

  3. *hums ‘Natal KilledThe Kameo Star’*

    • ha +1

  4. Not really much of a loss, is it? Kameo wasn’t exactly a good game, but then, what Rare game post N64 has been?

It’s pretty puzzling how they’re gone so long now without releasing anything new, did they even work on any of the Viva Pinata games after the first one?

    • Agreed, I am not aware of a single person who actually considered Kameo anything memorable or even above a passable title.
Not a huge loss really for 360 owners as I’m sure Natal will kick ass (although it does not seem to interest me as my Nintendo Wii will always provide the best motion-sensing games).

    • conkers bad fur day was good.
but then that was just a port of the n64 game so doesn’t really count i suppose.

  5. If this was the case, then Rare would of been better off at Nintendo anyway. What was the point of developing for Natal, since they could of done the same with the Wii if they stayed with Nintendo.

  6. I forgot about Kameo game didn’t even know there was going to be a 2nd one. Heard some good and bad reviews about this game but I think I will have to give it a miss. I’m sticking to my PS3 lol.

    • it was a fun game, not bad for a launch title.
they never did release the version for the original xbox did they?
i remember a few articles showing the differences between the two versions so they were making one, guess that was before ms killed the first xbox stone dead.
still i picked up quite a few xbox games ultra cheap after that :)
