In the last month Team TSA has made it into the top 2000 F@H teams. It is getting harder to climb up the ranks as we get higher but with 88 members having contributed our team is growing. Join us for some paper cut-free folding and hopefully by next month we will break into the top 1500.
What is Folding@Home?
It is an application the makes use of your PS3’s processing power to solve biological puzzles. These particular puzzles are looking at how protein molecules assemble themselves or ‘fold’. Proteins are exceptionally important molecules and F@H’s biomedical research is currently studying diseases like Alzheimer’s, Huntingdon’s, Parkinson’s and cancer as well as working to develop new antibiotics.
Other research aided by F@H recently has been the, very topical, study of the influenza virus looking at how mutations might affect transmission rates of different strains of the virus to help predict and understand future pandemics. It is not only biomedical science that benefits either. Earlier this year two of the principal scientists behind F@H presented a paper entitled “Folding@home: lessons from eight years of distributed computing” at the IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium.
By contributing to F@H you are helping advance biology, chemistry and computer science, you get to do your bit for the good of humanity, become part of the most powerful distributed computing cluster in the world, according to Guinness, and join in with TSA’s community. If you often listen to music stored on your PS3’s HDD then your PS3 could be Folding while you listen. So go on, join our team and see how high you can climb in our list of TSA’s top 50 folders.
How do you Join the Team?
The first step is to make sure that you change your PS3’s F@H identity from the default “PS3″ to your TSA ID. It could be anything but if you use your TSA ID it will help us recognise you. Then you will need to tell the F@H application you want to be in our team.
Not Just For PS3s
Remember that you do not have to ‘Fold’ only (or at all) on your PS3 to contribute. See last month’s update, Cb’s recent post or the forum for more info.

“hopefully by next month we will break into the top 1500.”
That would be nothing short of stunning. Still hammering everything that’ll fold here.
Looking forward to my 3rd month with you guys (folding).

Just as a tiny mention, I think my WU score is wrong. Haven’t done that many.
Think it should’ve read 250 WUs… not 450.

well you have to forgive me, I type out each persons points and WU each day, so that’s 5,280 figures a month I have to type in, so it’s not my fault the odd stat is wrong, the important one (points) is right though
.
But yeah, you’d done 250 WU’s.

Oh my god, forgiven in a moment. What a horrendous task to type all those numbers in. Is there no better way for it to be done! I think we all owe you a pint.

Aye, or TSA points for every month, It’d be nice if nofi could get a sidebar implimented into the hopepage for the team rank, number, WU’s and points

So thanks to Uncharted 2 I lost my 1st place, it was worth every minute. Planning to get back on top by the end of November.

I’m in there as jonathan_Carson! But alas, due to my change to a slim and donor name carson321, I am slowly dropping position but promise to reappear soon under my more easily attributal guise!

Yes you will as long as you specify the same donor name. I am folding on 3 machines right now.

Thanks, I think I might set up my PS3 to turn it on automatically once left idle for a while. It wont happen much but its better than nothing at all.

As sonicsteve said you can, on an unlimited amount of machines.
I run 2 on my PC (2CPU’s, 1 GPU), my PS3, and my sisters netbook, and the odd time her PS3. All running under my name, and getting different WU’s.
Ideally you should be running it on as many systems as you can (and have permission to do)

@Roynaldo, if your not using your PS3, but downloading something from the PS Store, put folding@home on, and things will download whilst folding.
I’d also recommend putting it to shutdown after completeing a WU, saves you downloading a new one when its less likely to finish.
If I’ve confused you, ask in the forum

It was hardwork to pass Jas-n, and it has been difficult holding my spot just ahead! Just using my PS3 since the FH app seems to cause my PC to shutoff!

Every time this list is published I tell myself I need to get into Folding again. I had about 8 work units on my old PS3 but then it refused to upload them so I lost all faith, thinking it was just pointless. Will definitely leave my PS3 on over teatimes though from now on to get back into it.
