The Annual Golden Joystick Awards took place on October 30th and my opinion of some of the winners is graphically represented by the picture on the left. The ‘Game Of The Year’ went to the massive – and massively bugged – Fallout 3. Bethesda’s sprawling game beat Call of Duty World at War, Left 4 Dead, Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
Fallout is a great game but should such a bug ridden product be game of the year? Publisher of the year went to.. brace yourselves.. Activision. To hell with innovation, recycling Guitar Hero every few months and publishing Call Of Duty is obviously what gamers wanted in 2009. And probably 2010. And 2011. I’m hoping that the Mayan prophecy that fortells the end of the world in 2012 will occur as I have borrowed Michael Pachters crystal balls and don’t think I can face the 2012 Activision line up of ‘Guitar Hero: Hanson’ and ‘Call Of Duty 1066: Norman Conquest’. Other award winners were LittleBigPlanet and Gears of War 2 – anyone remember those from, er, 2008?
The Golden Joysticks 2009 have shot in to the Guinness Book Of Records as the biggest Video Games awards ever with over 1.2 million UK gamers clicking on their favourites. Rumours that Afghanistan election officials were employed to count the votes have yet to be confirmed. Here is the full list of lucky winners:
