Microsoft have today launched a pilot for their ‘Reward Points’ program. Whilst those with Playstations are used to purchasing digital content with actual money, Xboxers have been using points; and what do points make? Sorry I couldn’t help myself.
The reward scheme in question is simple in principle and if it appears to be a viable way of doing things, could be rolled out onto the Microsoft system soon. But what is this scheme? I hear you cry. Well, first off, it will be of more interest if you are a Gold account holder, although Silver accounts will see some rewards too. You will basically be getting extra points for ‘doing the stuff Xbox LIVE members do all the time’, for example, renewing your Gold account on a monthly basis will net you 10 points. Points will also be rewarded for things such as purchasing from the XBL Marketplace and participating in surveys.
The full list of rewards (on the Pilot scheme anyway):
The pilot scheme is open to a very limited number of people and has begun today. We’ll keep you psted on the outcome.

Interesting. Still waiting to see whether M$ or Sony ever decide to reward gamers based on Achievement Points/Trophies. I remember hearing slight rumblings from the Sony camp about potentially doing this at some point in the future, but to be honest, I can’t see it happening. Not for tangible rewards anyway… maybe to unlock cooler profile avatars or something? (Hey, they should do that!)

I think MS does that, I know some games on 360 unlock gamer picturers and (maybe) themes are you play it through.

As a side note, Nintendo has something similar at the moment. If you help a new Wii to get connected to the net, you earn 500 points, which can get you an old NES game eg. Now the really crazy part is if you help 10 people, beside the 5000 points, you get FREE access to all of Nintendo’s own NES games in the Wii shop. If you help 20 persons, beside the 10k points (which is a shitload), you get FREE access to ALL NES, SNES and N64 Virtual Console games! O_o
I need to find my self a nursing home and help some old people

Yeah, it would be cool if you maybe got some free DLC for certain games, based on your Achievements/Trophies. Or maybe for example if you got a Platinum on a game, it would unlock some extra content.

I like the sound of it too, although I no longer own a 360
. I bet it will encourage a few more to take that leap to Gold too.

I think xbl gold has a reduced price now as well. Not sure if it is permanent though, but if it is the xbox is starting to represent better value for money.

Wait, when you say points, do you mean the points you can use to buy things on the marketplace (Microsoft Points)?

To earn rewards and participate in the Xbox 360 LIVE Rewards Pilot Program (the “Program”), you must be a legal resident of one of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia, 17 years or older, agree to these Xbox 360 LIVE Rewards Pilot Program Terms and Conditions (“Terms&Conditions”), and were informed by Microsoft (“Sponsor”, “we”, or “our”) via email confirmation that you were accepted into the Program. Void where prohibited by law.
america only for the moment it seems, who wants to bet the final scheme will be the same.

Last sentence has a typo “psted”. Unless that is a super-awesome-cool kids speak I’m missing?
Anyway, interesting news. So Sony, your move

“and what do points make?” – they make Microsoft extra money. Say you buy 4000 points, but only spend 1000 of them. straight away. The cash for the other 3000 sits with Microsoft in their bank account, generating interest until you finally spend it and they have to give the cash to whatever company you bought from, and they would only balance up their books at the end of the month so even if you spent all your 4000 points half way through the month, MS would collect the interest for the whole month. The interest on 3000 points isnt much, but there are 26 million or so Xboxes and you can bet quite a few of them have spare points laying about. It’s a craft trick loads of businesses useto make extra cash – its the same as a gift card from HMV – you might get that for Christmas but not spend it till September next year – HMV collect the interest on that gift card money for 9 months.

Free Microsoft points? Nice. Seems like it’ll take a while to save up enough to buy anything though(Seems like it’d be a bonanza for people who buy Rock Band/Guitar Hero DLC though if nothing else), but hey, nothing cheaper than something free… if you can get in to the scheme obviously
I’m supposing I’d be pushing my luck if I asked of this scheme was likely to retroactively take into account all your past renewals and purchases on XBLA if you DID get in though

It’s a discount at the most.

That’s a badly worded good point. Let me rephrase that for you.. *ahem*
“So you get rewarded small amounts of space-cash for using a service that you pay for when the competition does it for free? So?”
