  1. Noice.

    • Noice?

      :D

      • they do look noice though dexter – you have to admit that..

      • I didn’t say that they didn’t look noice, but I just thought that it was a weird choice of wording.
        :D

      • -_- sarcasm overload.. overload..overload. I was joking, and i’m picking up sarcasm dripping off of your last comment too!

      • sounds more like south london accent? Noice mate, noice!

      • Eh, leave arght mate, a’right.

      • sounds more like an irish accent to me.

      • Sounds a bit Northern to me!! ;)

      • i just assumed it was aussie. have you guys not heard of kath and kim?

  2. Catchy name “PlayStation Network Video Delivery Service”

    • LOL I thought that.

      • PNVDS doesn’t sound good either.

      • You could call it PSNVIDS – pronounce it “Pee-Ess-En-Vids”

      • Lol, Ed you could have just called it ‘PSN Vids’, instead of writing it phonetically. ;)

      • Why not have it called the PSN Video & Games area. Or VAG for short.

      • @shockwave – could have, but I’m just awkward!

    • Playstation Entertainment Network Interactive Screener

      • Umm
        That’s quite a mouthful

      • as only you could do TC

      • Awesome.

      • Seriously lmao!! You’ve just made my day!

      • best name ever =)

  3. Great news, i would however like some idea of pricing!

    • I suppose we’ll find out on the day

  4. Looking forward to this.

    • Same here. But only if they have 2012 up there on the day of release.

      • yeah I think this is great for PSN. Looking forward to the renting more than anything, but I guess it depends on pricing again. If it can’t compete with Lovefilm for me, then I wont bother.

  5. Is there any news on TV shows being released.
It’s the only reason I would use the service.

    • Yep, they have no plans for TV shows to come to the Euro version, for the time being.

      • Bit hard to justify TV programs when things like iplayer are around at no cost. Probably mor profitable to focus on movies than old TV shows.

      • tell that to itunes.
far as i’m concerned this video store is worthless until they get some tv shows.

      • If you look at the american video store they manage to justify the sale of TV shows.
Most video delivery services atm don’t show American imports – the type seen on the US store. Provided they stay up-to-date it’d give Sony an open market.

    • I think that there’s a massive rights issue with getting US TV shows out over here before they’re on Sky. Unless Sony do some serious lawyering we’re unlikely to get an interesting TV show offering.

      • Exactly – Sony are a movie company, they can badger other movie comapnies to join – Sony dont have any influence in the TV market and it would cost a fortune for them to buy shows before Sky.

      • It’s the networks that allow digital downloads, and set the price and release time. The reason you don’t get them is because right now they make more money selling shows to Sky, and on DVD sales. It’s really more about US and UK networks working together to share than Sony pulling strings. Since companies like Sky buy the rights to broadcast US shows in the UK and charge to view them, they are probably fighting digital downloads since they stand to lose the most.

      • not only do sony own movie studios but tv studios too.
and itunes have loads of tv shows throughout europe.
if we don’t get them on the ps3 it’s down to scee not putting the work in.

    • “The video store will offer high quality entertainment”
This makes me think it will not be anywhere near bluray quality, DVD most prob, possibly up to 720p

      • i really doubt that is referring to the picture quality of the videos, more likely a general statement as in it wont be a load of crap movies

      • If you download the announcement trailer off the PSN it’s in 720p – not that that really means anything; although i expect 1080p is unlikely as PSN download speeds are far too slow.

      • It makes no difference… the bittrate is more important than whether it’s 1080p or 720p

Blu-ray has a bitrate of 48mbps – and that aint going to be provided by a broadband provider for a good few years yet.

I’m a long time subscriber of SkyHD and when it first launched it broadcast in 1080i & 720p – It still does that, although I think the picture quality is far worse, and that is because they are cramming more HD channels on to the transponders meaning bitrate has to be lowered. and its because of this lowere bitrate that the quality is no where near what it was.

My point being, there is far more to a good picture than resolution alone

        (sorry for waffling)

      • Waffle away, I think that the importance of bitrate is too often overlooked. I’ve recently bought Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on blu (for the girlfriend, honest.) I previously had the film as an HD file and the bitrate difference is enormous. In a specific scene the bitrate of the rip is 6mbps while the blu-ray is nearly 40mbps. On the same TV, same settings and shown through the same PS3, the quality is huge. Most importantly, the blu-ray on 720p still looks far better than the file on 1080p. What people don’t understand is that heavy video compression can destroy huge amounts of detail no matter what your resolution is.

    • Blu-ray quality would be a large file though – there is a balance between quality and file size, unfortunately you can’t have both.

      • I can see it being quite interesting if you rent a movie and the filesize is huge.

For instance, lets say its a 24 hour rental (like on the Xbox equivelant) and you rented a film that was 2gb in size. Most normal people would spent most of that time downloading the film, which makes the service pointless.
Further more, if the films are going to be of DVD quality, why bother renting, it’s cheaper to buy if that is the case.

      • if it’s like the xbox service the 24hour period wouldn’t start until you actually started watching the movie.
and you can have the movie for 14 days before it expires, but once you watch it that reduces to just 24 hours.
of course if you start watching it before it’s finished downloading and lose your internet for 24 hours you’d be stuffed.

  6. Is the video service coming to Ireland does anyone know?

    • France, Germany, Spain and the UK

Now if the UK had helped out during the famine your forefathers wouldn’t have felt so aggrieved and would probably have spent easter 1916 tucking into their Easter eggs instead. The upshot being that many decades later the Video Store arrives on both sides of the Irish Sea at the same time.

But that’s history for you ;)

  7. There was mention in the EU Blog post for last weeks store update “Now for a small announcement, this is advance warning about next week; we are only releasing a small update next week as we have some behind the scenes work (nothing exciting, but necessary) underway, so we’ll have minimal time to update the store – normal service will resume from the 12th however” Could it be appearing on the 12th.

    • Quite probably, yes.

      • Mike Kebby (think thats his name) said that the vid store is being managed by a completely different team to the ones in charge of the store so this minimal update is nothing to do with the vid store.

    • “available on the PlayStation Network Video Delivery Service before Christmas.” – so it’s no longer even garenteed for ‘november’ :(

      • What they mean is that you’ll get the store in Nov, but some of the titles they mentioned i.e. Harry Potter and the 50% blood prince will not be available until it’s released on DVD/Br…sometime before christmas.

      • just don’t be surprised if it doesn’t launch till december, this is scee we’re dealing with, “on time” just isn’t in their vocabulary.

  8. Yeah is Ireland happening too? It said so on the first press release…

  9. Yup definitely gonna grab the Hannah Montana movie! Somplesz

    • I typed “Simplesz” damn it!

      • No, you didn’t.
