I’ll be glad when today is over as we seem to be getting a Modern Warfare story every few seconds. The latest is that MP Tom Watson (Labour) has set up a Facebook group that ’aims to coordinate responses to articles in the media which, gamers claim, do not give a fair view of their hobby’. The catalyst for this action is the views of another MP, Keith Vaz (Labour) who keen readers may recall from my previous article, is a bit a numpty when it comes to games. According to *sigh* The Daily Mail, Keith Vaz has looked at Modern Warfare 2 and decided,
“I am absolutely shocked by the level of violence in this game and am particularly concerned about how realistic the game itself looks.”
Vaz is to raise the issue in Parliament today, hopefully with Tom Watson and Ed Vaizey on standbye to shoot him down. Those of you wishing to joing the Facebook can click here.

Joined this earlier after following a link in the BBC technology blog, glad to see someone has gamers backs in parliaments.
I do find it amusing that the generally the only times the largest mainstream hobby in the UK gets a mention is when there is controversy though.

Look, it is pretty violent as a game… What was previously viewed as unacceptable is becoming pretty normal these days.
I personally do enjoy shooters, but I have started to steer clear of them of late due to the escalating violence levels… I think games should be a means of escape rather than über realism. But that is just my two cents.

Keith Vaz can do one…you cant expect everyone to understand. People still smash up Art, fight against various music artists…so on and so on…
A little recognition as an industry would be nice though. Especially with what this country has given to games.

Keith bloody Vaz… doesn’t surprise me one bit.
Tom Watson, I just realised, was educated in my 2nd choice high school across town! Hows about that…

Just saw Vaz and Watson debate this on Sky News. Well I say debate, Vaz just sat there like the hot steaming turd that he is and espoused the Daily Mail readership with his predictable, pious tone we’ve all grown to love.
Watson was disappointing. He pretty much distanced himself from MW2 and said he wouldn’t play it and neither would his kids. If he had any balls, he would have taken Vaz on with a clear message that gamers are not deviants and contribute considerably to the economy. And then shot him in the face with a concealed Colt M1911.
