A few months ago Square Enix announced it’s purchase and take over of the UK-based Publisher – Eidos. Since then, there have been fears as to how Square Enix will adapt its newly acquired company and whether or not it will keep things open.
Square Enix have now announced their European prescence as Square Enix Europe; and the London office that used to house Eidos will remain open as it takes charge of UK, French and German sales and marketing.
Developers such as Square Enix London Studios, Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics, among others, will also remain active for the time being and Square Enix Europe CEO – Phil Rogers – is already excited for the future:
We have a formidable product-line up which truly showcases the diversity of our exceptional gaming brands
There have been ‘cuts’, however. Square Enix, as a whole, have reduced the number of staff by up to 10%, but, speaking with gi.biz, Global President – Yoici Wada – has reassured that this was not just down to the acquisition of Eidos; it was part of the company’s ‘ongoing routine’.
With Batman: Arkham Asylum recieving critical acclaim and selling very well, the newly formed company is already seeing success.
Whilst other publishers are withdrawing their interest in new IP, Square Enix have been one of the most vocal companies when it comes to supporting new IP. Wada explains:
It’s how we want to develop and nurture new IPs – we want to work on them very carefully and thoroughly, which doesn’t necessarily mean just increasing the number of people. We won’t blindly launch new IPs, but we’ll take time with each one so that they can be successful…
As an entertainment company the business won’t be viable if we don’t continue to nurture new IPs – but we don’t need to come up with something that’s dramatically new for the existing franchises, because we already have fans for those. If we carefully evolve them, that should be sufficient.
Yoici Wada is particularly excited about E3 2010 where Square Enix will, for the first time, display both company’s future titles under one massive banner.
So, with Eidos under it’s wing and everything now in place, will we see Square Enix become an even more powerful name in the industry? Obviously, people can promise the world, but the proof is in the pudding. I hope their stance on new IP is one that will stay and I hope we see a few sequels to the games that we already love; I’m looking at you Batman and Lara.

square actually having an interest in europe can only be a good thing.
they have traditionally shown little regard for europe, hopefully we’ll see a change in their attitudes.
i’m hoping that will start with the next final fantasy not taking a year to come out in europe like all the previous incarnations.

The e-mail I received from SquareEnix Europe yesterday (and again today – not sure why) had FF13 for a spring release in Europe.

Pretty big year for them with all manner of Final Fantasy’s hitting the consoles. I only hope that the acquiring of a new studio will help them make games quicker. The wait between FF is to long, it almost as bad as the gap between GT!
I still have to experience Batman AA but from what i have heard its a good game. Will be on the look out for that one in the January bargain bin.

but each new final fantasy is a whole new game with a new game world and for the last few games a brand new gameplay mechanic.
not like gt, which will be pretty much the same game apart from a new engine.
and the ff games still come out more often.

FF XII came out about the same time as the PS3 launched. So it hasn’t been too long and at least it isn’t an annual update

Though I was sad when Eidos ceased being British I was just glad it wasn’t bought by an American company. Now I love the USA, don’t get me wrong I’ve been on holiday there many a time, but most of the big publishers are American and it would be better for the games industry if control was spread out.

Megacorp is the way of the industry, and with it annual sequels.
EA were the last hope for new IP from big company’s but yesterday they turned their back on it and said they were practically only interested in titles which would sell 2m+
Sorry, but I can’t get excited about 10 different Final Fantasy games a year.

To be fair there’s pretty good reasons they turned their back on new IP, and at least they tried.

Yeah, I’m sceptical, but I do hope that they follow through with their promises for new IP. They would become hypocrites otherwise due to the fact that they have so publicly fought for it.

I don’t see the Final Fantasy series as a sequelfest like FIFA. Every modern FF game (except the few real sequels) is a complete new game with new characters, new gameplay and a new story. I hear noone complaining about GTA always being the same. This is the reason why I personally don’t like GTA as a series. I enjoyed Vice City but except for better graphics I don’t see the big difference in any of the games. Final Fantasy on the other hand always feels fresh and it really is a sign for a quality RPG I can pick up without having to fear that I might just be wasting money on a mediocre game.

I always complain about GTA, and you’re right about VC.
With FF, you say new story… maybe but the ideas are generally the same, and as for the new mechanics they’re not really any different to 360deg running in FIFA and other such annual ‘improvemnts’
In my opinion, of course.

Well, you can always break a story down to the point that it sounds like good fights evil or guy saves girlfriend. But then you could say the same thing to 70% of all games. With FF games you got a 40+ hour singleplayer experience, which in my opinion is more worth than a multiplayer mode people can enjoy for 100+ hours. A MP mode keeps itself alive pretty much by itself. Implement 2-3 modes without being too creative. DM, TDM and CTF do the trick most of the time. Rename CTF to Capture The “insert valuable item here” and you’re good to go. With a SP Story like in FF games everything is crafted into it carefully. A long story istn’t always a good one, but in my opinion and experience I always get a rich experience out of a FF game. And to get back to my FIFA comparison. If Square Enix released a FF game on a yearly basis like FIFA games, it would probably get old very fast. But with 3 year gaps between FF games it doesn’t feel so similar.

I apologize if my other post sounds a little fanboyish. It was not my intention.

I read that Square Enix is in the last stage of development for US and EU versions. Everything is progressing very smoothly and there are only some finishing touches missing. My fingers are crossed for an early 2010 release.

I hope they do a new Lara Croft game with the same time and skill as the Batman Double A. that came out. Hopefully the next E3 will sine some light on this project or just as good a game on WitchBlade or any other of TopCows comics. And its may never happen but if Lara C. where in Kingdom Hearts along with some Marvels cast; That would blow my mind and I’d pay soooooo much to play it.
