Two week ago mention gaming and politics in the same sentence and you would of been laughed out of town. Since then it’s become a hot topic with questions on Modern Warfare 2 being asked in Parliment and in response, an MP setting up a Facebook group in support of negatively portrayed gamers. TSA also dabbled in a lil’ bit o’ politics when we discussed the Conservatives plans for the gaming industry which just proves what trendsetters we are.
The Facebook group was set up by Labour MP Tom Watson and he has been joined by Conservative Ed Vaizey and Labour’s Sion Simon to actively promote gaming. The group now has over 12,500 members and Watson is inviting you all to submit questions to the other MPs. Click here for the link to Facebook where you can post your questions.
Please remember to keep your questions on topic – as much as we would all like it, we can’t ask for the phone number for MP Keith Vaz so we can all shout abuse at him.

Wow. I never thought I would see the day when MPs are actually supporting video games. At least it’s a step in the right direction; I think in about 10-20 years when the our younger generation get in to the positions of power , it will become a much less “looked down upon” form of media and become more similar to the mainstream acceptability of films today.
BTW, it’s parliAment. sorry.

You know, these things do sometimes get replies. I once emailed my local MP about some stupid anti-piracy law (which would have basically given the police the right to monitor any Internet traffic to/from your computer without warrant) and I got a reply from my MP along with alittle bit extra from Jacqui Smith.

I’m Irish, so it doesn’t matter what I want asked, but I want to know what games do MPs actually play. What’s their trophy level/ Achievement score? Or is this just a desperate ploy to gain votes in the next election, only to ignore gaming then.
Forgive me if I’m being a bit cynical, but Irish politics is a joke. Did u hear about the Finance minister who “didn’t” have a bank account? He became Taoiseach! (Prime Minister, if u don’t speak Irish)

Ed Vaizey has a Wii, I think he’s getting an Xbox and PS3 shortly.

Haha. Yeah it would be funny to find out their trophy level/achievements score!!
I suspect it wouldn’t be particularly high!!

It a no-win situation: if it’s low, they don’t know what they’re talking about. If it’s high, why are they playing games instead of representing the people?!

Don’t forget this story from earlier this year http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2009/03/20/games-important-to-uk-economy/ which shows that some (not many) do recognise the importance of video games. This Early Day Motion was actually tabled by Ed Vaizey so he is showing himself to be a constant supporter of the video games industry.
While on the on the subject of EDMs, our friend Keith Vaz has recently tabled one on the Modern Warfare 2 subject and can be read here http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=39530&SESSION=899
If nothing else this comment gives people the chance to discuss early day motions in a completely different way, which reminds me, back in 5!
