I pretty much agree with Nofi's comments; a dull, soulless and vapid campaign which is more or less propped up by a decent but underdeveloped Spec Ops and good multiplayer. I'm glad I only rented it; not really the sort of game for me.

Assassin's Creed II, on the other hand, I am absolutely loving! :)

or you could review a game based entirely on its merits and failures based on the general quality of games in the genre out today. you dont have to like the genre to give an objective review

Ah right. The way you worded it sounded like you hadn't played it.
Anyway, I wasn't talking plot so much as pacing and storytelling. MW1's plot was by the books, but the parallel stories from the Ranger's invasion and the SAS' covert ops were paced much better.

By comparison, the only bit that really matches this in MW2 is Act 2 and the beginning of Act 3, where you switch between the US and TF141. It was paced better, had a sensible and clear progression from one mission to the next, within their respective plot lines, and just felt right.

But the airport scene with the twist at the end of the level was poorly handled. There hadn't been enough time with that character and you were just dumped in this situation with no lead up.
Then later on with the final twist, it was so ridiculous and unbelievable that I was actually laughing and couldn't take it seriously in the slightest. Compared with the way the nuke explosion was handled in COD4, all the twists in this one were over the top B-Movie stuff fit for 24's 6th series, compared to the excellently handled 1st series 24 stuff I was expecting.

I haven't played the sp yet, but the MP is very entertaining now all the problems with invites etc is sorted out. I prefer the online to CoD4 and can see it keeping me entertained for quite a while. The spec ops mode is challenging and a welcome addition. Hopefully, when the release the map packs they will include more co-op content like W@W with it's rather excellent zombies mode. I can't for obvious reasons rate the SP then, but the MP is easily 10/10.

I wish I played the whole game on Veteran now. I switched to Veteran about 4 levels from the end and it has been not only relatively easy, but so much more realistic and tense and it plays more like the campaign should. You feel like more of a soldier.
Multiplayer is indeed addictive and rank once again means nothing. The best players seem to be level 20 and under.

Not interested in the game but have found all the replies fascinating. If we average the comment reviews then I think 9/10 is probably close to the mark. Maybe 8½/10... so TSA has reviewed it well. One thing I'd like to see (maybe in the distant future and possibly laced with trinkets and alcohol for nofi to enjoy as no doubt the poor soul would have to code such a thing) would be to have a Readers' Reviews section. I often let it influence me if I'm borderline with an official review. Not usually because of the score (although that's very helpful) but because of the scores of comments where a few forumites/members might pick up on something different. This "something different" strikes a chord with me and tips me over into making a purchase. Just a thought. :D

Anyway, that's neither here nor there right now. Great article and fascinating comments. I might unwrap MW1 soon and give it a go. :D

I was indifferent to it

I'd like the idea of 'challenging' scenes in videogames, but what I find disgusting is the huge volume of parents who buy the game for their 11-15 years olds

I just thought it was poorly done, I felt that they'd had to hold back, so it was neither one thing nor the other (other than publicity of course)

Oh? i guess i must be the only person who really enjoyed 'No Russian'? call it a guilty pleasure if you will (and i do) but in any game i've ever played, and if game permitting, i will always kill innocents (and in game team members) just because i can.
I hold no morality towards a couple of sprites on a screen, and i'm sure most game players would agree. All this furor is, as always, just hyperbole...

This game is truely amazing! The story, although short is a brillaint experiance and online is everything that COD4 was, just better. I especially love the 4 player split screen co-op with the ability to have each player ranking up to unlock weapons n stuff.
It has to be 10/10 imo.

I've kinda been forced into playing the Call Of Duty games due to splitscreen multiplayer matches at one of my mates. Bought COD 4 a long time after it was released, never bought WAW, but got sucked into the MW2 hype. Having now played most of the single player campaign I have to say I'm disappointed and am only persevering for the sake of trophies! I have only played one session of online multiplayer which wasn't even ranked and what I'm really not looking forward to (considering that I'm not actually that good at COD) is getting my face splattered all over the show by much higher ranked players who have been caning it online from the word go! Oh well, might as well keep playing it, everyone else on my friends list seems to be! Don't know why more people haven't bought Uncharted 2, it's a much better game in my opinion.

Bought COD 4 a long time after it was released, never bought WAW, but got sucked into the MW2 hype. Having now played most of the single player campaign I have to say I’m disappointed and am only persevering for the sake of trophies! I have only played one session of online multiplayer which wasn’t even ranked and what I’m really not looking forward to (considering that I’m not actually that good at COD) is getting my face splattered all over the show by much higher ranked players who have been caning it online from the word go! Oh well, might as well keep playing it, everyone else on my friends list seems to be! Don’t know why more people haven’t bought Uncharted 2, it’s a much better game in my opinion.

but everybody has a bias don't they.
is a review fair if you only get people who love the genre to review it?
you want people who live and breathe fps to review the game, but you also want somebody who's not into fps games to give it a play as well.
if you're being objective you can still say when a game is good even if it's not your kind of game.
