To be honest, I’ve never really had a problem with WipEout HD’s in-game advertising but some aren’t happy with the pre-loading ones that increase the time taken to actually get into a game.  As far as I can tell the adverts are less intrusive here in Europe than they are in the US, but still, you’ve paid your money for a game, why should it then be peppered with advertising?

Well, according to this chap on the EU Forums, it’s really rather simple to remove them from your game.  “Simply make sure you are offline while you start the game,” he says, “only sign in after the entire intro sequence has completed. That’s it.”  Apparently the ads are downloaded at the beginning during the intro sequence, and assuming you have a fresh install of the game there’s no way they can be downloaded.

“This is perfectly legal and does not violate any terms of use,” he concludes.

  1. Interesting stuff, I’ll have to try this out sometime. I dont find them too much of a problem though.

  2. Nice tip. I’ll give this a try later!!

    • and simple

  3. When I read the headline I was sure it was going to be complicated. Was sure proved wrong :-)

  4. I dont mind them but I will try this out.

  5. I did try but was welcomed online by an ad. I haven’t try staying offline on the campaign though.

  6. Thanks for reporting this. The adverts are just as intrusive in Europe. In what way can an advert for a Rocky Blu Ray be non-intrusive on the loading screen of a futuristic racer? These are not loading screens, we should call them whay they are: they are advertisement screens, and Sony have no right to put these adverts in a game we alread paid for, effectively changing the product I have bought. I made a one-time transaction for an ad-free game and Sony have gone back and attempted to change the nature of this transaction – effectively having another dip in our pockets. I would not have bought the game if I had known these adverts would be put in. Every purchase implies a form of contract and this is a breach of contract with me as their customer. I believe these ads are an experiment, the thin end of the wedge, and if it is considered a success we can look forward to messages that “your game will start in 30 seconds….” for a lot more games in future. And don`t kid yourself that these are “paying” for online services. What evidence is there for that? The idea is simply to have us get used to ads so we don`t complain about them, then they become a fact of life and an extra “revenue stream” at our expense.

  7. I’ve not played WipEout for ages so don’t know how intrusive these adverts are, but I don’t think I could be seriously arsed with signing out and then back in everytime I play. Not only that having to uninstall, redownload and reinstall (asuming you got it of the PSN) :s

  8. I had no idea about this either , havent played in a while . I do remember ages ago a story that said loading times between levels had been increased as a result but i thought Sony Liverpool acted swiftly and just removed them almost the next day . Didnt know they where back .
