The PlayStation Video Delivery Service has just gone live – if you’ve already downloaded the latest firmware (see today’s earlier stories) you should now see Store under your Videos column on the XMB, where (apparently) 800 videos await your pennies.  Prices start at £2.49 for SD rentals, going up to £11.99 for HD purchases.

We’ll return with a full blog of last night’s events later, but in the meantime rejoice in the news that the Video Store is actually all kinds of awesome.

Comments

Please note that all comments are the opinion of the individual author and not TheSixthAxis.

  1. Will the blog include info on tiny shepherds pies?

    • Almost certainly, that’s pretty much all we talked about.

      • Sweet. Don’t care about the launch, but shepherds pies matter

      • i love shepherds pie.

you know shepherds pie is made with lamb right?
        cottage pie is beef.
        :)

      • Oddly enough, the clue is in the name…

      • yeah but some people still think a shepherds pie has beef in it.
i was having a discussion on this very subject the other day.

  2. It’s not under my video column, but the option to go to the video store in the PS store!

  3. There are people living in Greece too! Greeks not only do they get what Europe gets (you all know) but EVEN less. No TV, No Music Videos, No Rock Band, No drum bundles with music games, No Video Store…and many many more F***ing NOs….

    • Greece has good weather. Swings and roundabouts, my friend, swings and roundabouts.

      • Well…I want my PS3 to be treated equally! I’m tired of the good weather.. Now that i’m an “official” member of the TSA community (i am reading blog from forever, anonymously) i wont rest till we get Vidzone, Video Store and the lots… :)

      • Food’s quite good as well. If I spoke Greek I’d consider trading.

      • It’s all Greek to me.

      • Greece, its Hell ‘init

        /coat

  4. A quick browse suggests some of the prices are a little high… £8.49 for an SD copy of Beetlejuice? I think I bought that on DVD for £3. And I got extras with it.

    • Yeah as much as the convenience of having stuff on the HDD is, is it really necessary. It’s nice at first not to have to put a disc in everytime but how many times are you going to watch that downloaded copy 2012 or whatever that you bought?

If I can get DVD’s cheaper that’s the way I’ll be going.

      • Yea, i think the rental side of the store will take off more than the buying side for that reason…

  5. Can Anyone confirm that this will be coming to Ireland anytime? Thanks

    • Heard it was ‘early next year’, the facebook option isn’t on mine after the update. Is it the same on yours?

      • FB works for me… Weird :(

      • scrap last, brain-sneeze, found facebook under the account settings (unfortunately). Great to see sony haven’t fixed the fading text problem for media servers.

  6. I think that I’ll be renting all the way with this. Still the range at launch and commitment to 50 new movies a week is very impressive.

  7. I kind of missed some finer details on this

Do you have to wait for the whole movie to download before you can watch it, or is it ‘instant’ like the 360?

Because If I decide there’s nothing on TV tonight, I know – I’ll rent a move then I have to wait for it download overnight, it’d be kind of pointless, I can get to blockbuster and back quicker

Although in reality I’d do neither as I just get unlimited movies (and games) for just over a tenner a month from LoveFilm

    • It was one of those questions that you got different answers off depending who you asked. The general concensous is that streaming starts immediately, or thereabouts.

      • Ta

    • Press release says “PS3’s progressive downloading allows viewers to start watching a film shortly after the download begins.” I’d imagine it’s similar to how you can begin watching other videos off the store as they’ve downloading.

      • Buffering….

        every 5 mins then?

  8. With the latest update installed (on the playstation store) all I get is “your favourite movies COMING LATE 2009″ not much of an update for me in the UK. As for it being on my XMB its not there only the BD Data Utility and Search for media Servers. I can’t help but feel a little deflated now after the promise of,
“you should now see Store under your Videos column on the XMB, where (apparently) 800 videos await your pennies.”
May I ask since I don’t, as with possibly many others may find, don’t have any access to full length movie downloads could I get hold of some of the,
    “good weather. Swings and roundabouts.”
Weather this time of year isn’t so fantastic. Or am I asking too much from SONY here … mmm

    • Under Video on the XMB is a PS Store icon, go there – it has all the movies

      • Wasn’t there for me at 4am after I did the update.

      • funny, i didn’t see the store icon under video.
but there is a video button in the store, at the top left.
that takes me to the video store.

    • @forevermacin – stop being a nob. It’s coming, the fact that it’s not on YOUR ps3 isn’t my fault, is it?

  9. Loooking forward to having a browse around the video store tonight, once I’ve downloaded the update. I’m keen to give it a try by renting an HD movie…umm, what shall I pick?

  10. I don’t think people are going to pay to build a collection on their PS3 with it so difficult to get the content from their PS3 to other devices (PC etc). What happens at the end of the PS3 lifespan? Just throw all that content away? I think people will continue to buy dvds, blu ray, and illegally download to a PC for streaming. This will only be used for rentals when friends are round and you spot something you want to watch there and then without the inconvenience of waiting for a download to complete.

Always welcome the new additions to PSN though. Think VidZone is my favourite so far.

  11. Anyone else have a disappearing playstation store link?

When I logged in I had no link to the store under videos, logged into another profile and it was there but then disappeared. Anyone else missing this (yep I am running 3.10).

Not a problem as I can get to the store in other ways, just strange behaviour.

  12. You forgot to mention it also requires you to live in one of the few countries it is actually released in.

  13. woohoo nice-1

    • there are a lot of good flicks on there & some good ones from back in the day well done Sony

      • does need a few more hd ones because i have a full hd tv 42 inch i want all my vids in hd

  14. Are the EU Video Stores IP Locked between UK, Germany, France and Spain? Would be nice to stream movies in english from the UK store as a german PSN user.

  15. Just started downloading 3.10. Cant wait to start downloading movies :D
