top-gow

Before you read on you should probably know that, on this subject, I am a fan boy. A real, blatant, unashamed fanboy; so please be warned that the following post may appear a bit sickly. Something happened last night that has compelled me to write a public outpouring of appreciation and gratitude to Sony and Santa Monica Studios. As you can guess by the title of this post, I played the God of War Collection.

Now, Davs is going to be bringing you the review of the 2 games in their re-vamped form so I don’t want to get into that territory, but what Santa Monica Studios have achieved, in my opinion, is nothing short of genius. If I’m really honest, they could have released the games in their original state and I still would have been happy; but now in HD and on Blu-Ray, it’s become even more of a must-have series.

In fifteen weeks they have managed to take my favourite gaming franchise and give it a whole new lease of life. There are still a few moments that remind you of the previous generation but these are quickly forgotten when enough blood to make an elevator in the Overlook Hotel jealous, fills the screen. So far, having not completed either yet (i’m not that big a fan as to miss out on precious sleep) there are no bugs, no glitches and no detraction from the brilliance that is God of War.

I am somewhat sceptical of most things these days so I thought I would do something different and make this public thank you. It just goes to show that when they are on the ball, Sony really know how to execute something. I hope this is a sign of things to come and that other classic PS2 or even PSOne games get this treatment. Ico or Shadow of the Colossus in HD, anyone?

  1. Your fanboyism is accepted and I am in total agreement, I love the GoW games and I can’t wait to pick up the collection myself! Some of the most fun I had on my PS2 was from these 2 GREAT games and I would love to play through them again in HD and with Trophies to boot!

As for Shadow Of The Colossus oh man I really hope that happens….

  2. nice one, wasn’t this only released in the US thought, did you import it?

    • I did, from Gamesbasement and it arrived quicker than Usain Bolt!

      • Not that I had Usain Bolt delivered and GoW was delivered before him…oh, you get the point!

      • He would make a great postie though, no more waiting by the letterbox for you game to arrive late mid afternoon

      • Nice that someone can get any kind of action out of Gamesbasement. They won’t respond to any emails I send asking why they won’t send a game I had preordered that they’ve had in stock for weeks now.

    • I used the £5 voucher from Games Basement and got it from there.

  3. My copy recently arrived and I’ve been really impressed with the quality of the conversion.
My hope is they do the same with the PS2 MGS games.

  4. Im glad to know that they haven’t mucked it up, Im sure its an epic set of games! :D

Thanks Gastos, I’ll be looking at a purchase when they’re out :)

  5. I really am thinking of getting this at some point…never played them!

    • Ditto, I can see no real reason why it wont be released in EU at some point next year.

  6. I got this collection from ebay last monday and having played these games on PS2 i can say that the God of war collection is a must buy, The cut scenes seem to be in a different resolution to the rest of the game (probably the original PS2 resolution) but it shows how much better they have made the graphics if nothing else, and the gameplay is second to none. The inclusion of trophy support pushes you to keep playing and i just had to import it due to the fact that i couldn’t wait for SCEE to get off their arses to release it in the UK which looks like it could be around Febuary/March next year. I am just waiting for the confirmation of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus compilation now……please, please, please. Shadow of the colossus IMO is the best PS2 game to ever grace the system and while i do still play it on my backwards compatible PS3, (which does a good job of upscaling the graphics). To play it in this type of remastered HD with trophy support would be something special indeed.

    • The cutscenes to both games are all pre-rendered Hi-res scenes and they really do add something different to the games.

  7. I really should try these games out shouldn’t I…

    • DEFINETLY!

  8. And yes! There is store that i heard it was selling GOW-Collection and voila! I got it! I ACTUALLY. I’m HOLDING IT RIGHT NOW…(Reminder : I’m in a shithole called Greece :P )

I’m going to play in about 2 hours….Oh god! And i’ve not played GOW 2 ever cause my PS2 was broken by that time..

  9. Sry for double posting!
I’m looking forward to remakes from (actually ALL) Final Fantasies, Metal Gear Solids, ICOs, Crash Bandicoots, Kingdom Hearts, Zone of the Enders etc etc…I’m seeing flies all around me flying

  10. THese are great news. I was waiting to hear reports about the collection being shite, buggy and with messed up… everything.

These are awesome news, holy hell!! Can’t wait, but I need to get a new telly to show off the HD goodness before ordering, haha

  11. Castlevania too!

  12. I’ll hold my thanks until it gets ‘localized’ and released in Europe… Amazing how long it can take, considering they already went though it when the games first came out.

  13. Really looking forward to getting back into this, our copy will be here any day now. Been going back through chains of olympus on psp to tide me over.
Its one of those games where I would play and the other half would be watching in amazement, HD, trophies, its a new package for something that never gets old.

  14. This article is obviously and blatantly xbox biased!!

  15. Fumito Ueda has recently informed that he wants to do the same thing with Ico and Shadow of the Colossus before the release of the last guardian! So if this package happen to be commercially successful there’s no reason they won’t do it….GOW3 can’t wait any longer!
