It’s not an update to the servers, though, which last time we checked were dramatically underpowered, with our first attempt at watching a HD movie aborted after 6 hours of fruitless downloading. No, for those of you with quick enough connections, the PlayStation Movie Delivery Service is now getting some new films: Terminator Salvation, Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Bruno, Star Trek, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and “many more“!
Sounds great, although we were told the Video Store would update with “50 new titles every week” when we attended the rather grand opening launch party for the service. Interesting, then, that even most of the titles listed above as ‘new’ are already up there – let’s hope the Store updates with a good selection this evening, or whenever it is that the thing updates. As for the speed, well, I’m assuming that’ll all come soon enough, because I personally can’t even stream a trailer.

I also had problems streaming the trailers and I am on a 20Mbit connection, hopefully it can only improve from now on.

I get relatively good speeds for downloads even though my connection is 0.5 Mbps.
Store downloads aren’t too horrific. Haven’t tried the movie store yet though

I have to be honest, I have tried this twice and watched the films right from the start. It was if it was streaming, guesss I was lucky.

As usual with any new release of a service across all platforms, speed and availability of the servers is not great.
It can only get better though…hopefully
I would have liked the same amount of interaction on the blog for videos as is for the current store update by Mike Kebby

Sony seem to be messing this up. Less than impressed with the service and as for 50 a week? Never gonna happen. Oh and it’s expensive and the sound is crap and there is a complete lack of HD content or rentals. Yeah so average service. No wonder their not advertising it. “It only does everything” (small print: Badly if your in the EU)

Haha I like your last line
I reckon the 50 a week is the summation of new content such as new rental content on existing “buy-only” titles.

Expensive? Really? On a par with Blockbuster and itunes so…….? I agree the Stereo sound sucks but the picture quality on HD is spot on .
I dont see why they won’t keep up with the 50 per week comment. They made a similar commitment to Singstar and although it was a slow start they are (still) releasing a decent amount of content regularly.

a lot of Blu-rays are cheaper to buy by quite a lot. They need some serious promo work. You can get a huge range of BR stuff new for about £7.

Yeah I’m only looking at it from a rental perspective, as thats all I’d use it for.

I haven’t seen any decent Blu-rays for £7 new.
I agree though that SD content pricing is pretty high. It’s almost as if Sony take the RRP as gospel regardless of reality. Not even places like HMV stick to the RRP most of the time

if you look around you can deffo get blu rays for as little as £7 new – not newly released, but still new. I rarely pay more than £10 for a bluray

These movies were already on there.
But Bruno and Star Trek (at least) were ‘buy’ only, is the update that they are now up for rental?

To be fair its a new service so give it some slack.
My usual defense of the PSN is that its free.. But erm.. This isnt free at all, so hopefully they sort this sharpish.

Sony pays for the PSN’s running costs… who pays Sony? Magical but generous pixies?

The publishers and developers pay pretty hefty fees to Sony which contribute to much of the PSNs running costs.
Your basic point seems to be that nothing is free and we all pay for it in some way; correct me if I’m wrong. Based on that you’re saying free DLC doesn’t exist because its funded by you buying the original game. Also free websites don’t exist because they’re funded through advertising and that money comes from their customers.

Next you’ll be trying to tell me the NHS is free, and not a hugely expensive tax rip-off which I can get for a fraction of the price by actually *shock horror* paying for it

No but to those that don’t pay tax it’s free to them.
I was just trying to be clear about the point you were making. Nothing is free, you always pay for it somewhere down the line. As they say “there’s no such thing as a free lunch”.

Whats your point CC? I don’t remember paying any £40 subscription fees for the PSN like I would on certain other consoles. Seems to me like your just spoiling for a row ?
cc_star | 27/11/2009 13:20

5869 TSA Points | Member since: Forever
1) it’s about 26 quid… it’s no more £40 than MW2 is £55
2) The point is Sony or the publishers are paying for it and who pays them? we do obviously
3) No row, just the fact that there isn’t a free lunch and some waking up and smelling the coffee of the real world of economics, its a fact that the PSN costs money to run and its not funded by a charity. fact.

You know what I mean. But yes you have to buy the console, and the console works perfectly. The extra addition of PSN is however free, other than DLC etc which works fine for me whenever I use it. No need to get so technical, my initial comment was basically saying that the video delivery service is an issue that needs to be fixed and isn’t acceptable.

Don’t get CC on about the free service. Facts are PSN is a bit crap and the defense of it being free is waring thin. And the online aspect is HUGE but not being done properly.

Yeah I noticed haha. Although personally, I am one of those lucky ones that has never had a problem with the PSN. I’ve personally had more lag and problems with Xbox Live than PSN but I guess its down to experience, and perhaps the most noted cases are on PSN.
The only problem I have with PSN is that it doesn’t have a lot of the party features that Xbox has like party chat and easy game joining systems etc (other than MW2 that did it quite well)

I noticed some new films on there that were not on there yesterday AM but this was yesterday night so not entirely sure when the updates happen. With regards to the issues with downloading I am running a 16MB line that is pretty much running at full speed, I have so far only downloaded a SD film (i’m tight like that) but that gave me problems . Might have to give an HD one a shot to see how that looks.

Update the servers first before adding new stuff? Whats the point in adding new films when its going to take you 6+ hours to get to watch it. I rather walk down to blockbusters.

Singstar UK currently has 1082 songs.
Released Dec 07, 30(?) songs with the disc.
Approx average of 40 songs per month?
Hmmmm a few dozen? Do you even own Singstar?

Has anyone found any HD films to buy?
It seems daft to have big tentople releases like Star Trek and Terminator salvation only available to buy in SD on a piece of kit that is supposed to convince everyone to go out and buy a Bravia.

I see, it’s a pity. I for one would still buy Blurays even if I was given the option to download HD movies. The download option is all the better for those drunken impulse PSN splurges.

Yet another “blog” feature that is lacking in comparison to the US one. With regards to the US Game store update, on the blog they list the file sizes of everything, on the UK one it’s been said that they only way they could do that would be if they downloaded each one individually. (ie it’s not SCEE’s fault). A similar thing now with the Movie store update. With regards to the US one, the blog lists everything HD and SD that has been added. On EU blog, response to number 8 when asked “Any chance of a proper breakdown this week. Because I would like to see the 50 that were added this week without having to navigate the store constantly”, the reply was “It’s not up to us really” !!??. Well, if it’s not up to SCEE who are adding to the titles to the store, then who’s job is it?
