Presumably just for today, and obviously whilst stocks last, HMV are selling the brand new PSPgo for just £148.99, a massive saving off the RRP of £225 (which is what I paid for it at launch).  This is an absolute bargain – I’m a massive fan of Sony’s new portable and Tom loves it too – it would make an amazing Christmas present if you’re feeling generous.

It’s online only, mind, don’t set off wandering to your local store unless you’re happy paying full price.

  1. Hmm that is tempting as I still don’t own a PSP at all, but I don’t know weather I would like the PSPgo or a PSP 3000, cheap UMD’s is tempting on the used game market, missing out on that could be like shooting myself in the foot.

    • Psp go is better and more comfortable

      • yh 100% ture but when i click on the hmv link it said that the psp go was £199.99

  2. Is there a list anywhere of what games are available for the PSP Go? Checking the store on your PS3 seems like a bit of a ballache when you’re only slightly interested (such as by offers like this).

    You fancy doing one Al?

    • Just get the PSP Media Go! software from Sony. Browse the store on your PC.

      • Only if you have a PSP connected. It’s a pain in the ass

      • You don’t need a PSP connected to browse.

      • Don’t you? Last time I tried to use install it I was told I needed to connect my PSP.

      • Yes, my PC…

        …I’m a Mac.

      • Which is why I’m not seriously tempted, just interested. There are PCs I could use though, if I HAD to.

    • The Wikipedia page has a list for all regions and is fairly well maintained.

    • Umm? Just browse the store directly on the PSP?

The only downside with this was I had to enable the 802.11b (yes b!) on my router

      • The point (I assume) was that he wanted to know what’s available before purchasing the Go, to see if it’s worth while.

  3. ooh tempting but it would be something Id buy and never use :( got an original PSP that is just gathering dust at the mo!

  4. PSP3000 is also up to custom firmware. And since the psp titles have no online functionality (at least 99% of them) i think its better to get the 3000 model. You also get something physical when you buy games, not digital bytes.

Judging from the sales too, i consider the PSPgo to be a falure. The world and the storage space available, along with the prices are not ready to switch to digital yet.

  5. Might get it but all I want is Chains of Olympus, WipeOut and the Comic Reader

  6. That is absolutely superb value when you consider the PSP 3000 with a game thrown in is selling for £139.95 on average. I think anyone worried about UMD games should seriously consider getting this offer and an older used PSP (cheap) and have the best of both worlds. Wow £148.99….excellent.

  7. Thats madness

  8. Like NoFi I’m a massive fan of the Go although I started out as one of the most cynical. I’ve got all the games I want with me all of the time, it has really made me use my PSP much much more probably 400% more as it’s almost always with me!

Game pricing was an issue until the PSN cards came out which through Zavvi gives a nice 20% discount of every PSN purchase so my recent splurge on LBP cost £17.59 and AC Bloodlines at £19.19 don’t feel quite so bad… admittedly the £10 or so each I may get back at trade in with a UMD is lost but I actually feel it’s a price worth paying to have fast loading games with me at all time. Plus my music and comics are on there too now:-)

That’s enough sales pitch, go buy one!

  9. That’s a great deal, but I’m still not tempted as I don’t want to lose the ability to be able to play my UMD discs.

  10. Not surprised by this. Only that the retailer I’m working for over Christmas hasn’t done the same, customers just are not interested in a unit that costs £100 more and has less functionality and ties them into the online service.

I know there is more to it than that when considering which PSP to go for but the important factor is what the customer wants and perceives when comparing them.

My typical conversation with a customer at the moment is:
Cust: Hi, I want to buy a PSP please.
Me: OK, which one are you looking for, the normal one or the new PSPgo. (pointing to PSPgo)
C: (face screws up at sight of PSPgo and goes red when sees price tag)
    Me: ah, fair point.

    • Then that’s your job as a salesperson to point out the OTHER benefits: massively better screen, bluetooth (for Dualshock 3 play), much better form factor, fits in your pockets, comes with 16GB onboard, etc etc. :p

      • hehe, thought someone might say that :P

I get two types of customer, ones who have looked into what they want and have therefore already made the decision or those that have no idea of either and are just on instruction from the kiddies to get a PSP.

If I can’t get a picture of what they need then I give them them an unbiased run down of each system (as a mere xmas temp I have no long term interest in pushing the PSP over the go to get return sales – I am all for digital distribution). They take that information and the price points and so far none have gone for the go unless under specific instructions to buy one.

Its all very good having the nice features and all but the reality is that if the general public don’t see the value in them (i.e. that they cost so much more!) then it just won’t sell no matter how a nice a way you put it.

As ever Sony have gone mental on the initial price and will take ages to come down. Personally I think people sticking with the PSP will have a positive side effect as it will ease the handheld market into digitial distro. People have the older units and games but also buy games on PSN rather than forcing it and then no one will care if the PSP2 has no physical media.

I just think the PSPgo is either too late to market (I’d rather wait for a PSP2 than the PSPgo) or too expensive to be relevant.

  11. ahh now you have given me a major christmas dilema. Should I get one? Anyone got on and can give me and honest answer on is there enough available on this to justify it?

    • The two links in the article should be enough. I love it.

    • More than enough, it’s surprising how amazing the screen is, how useful the pause game function is, how handy mobile tethering can be, how tiny it is and just how convenient having all your games, some music and some comics/movies on one place is. My best portable console buy EVER!

      • What pause game function is this. On my (now broken) 1000 and my current 2000, pressing start generally pauses a game for me! Or do you mean where you can flick the switch at the side, and put it into ’sleep’ mode, where if you flick the switch again, the game resumes exactly where you left off?

      • It’s a suspend function that saves game state and returns you to the XMB, accessed via the In-game Kurosumediaba:

    • I just have reservations that the support of titles is not good enough from Sony. Is this as bad a folks make out, just just people liking a good moan.

      • Sony’s support is fine.  It’s the other publishers that are lacking.

  12. I must sahibought the pspgo and it was the best move i made. I sold all my old psp games, console and various other bits and bobs on eBay and it pretty much paid for the go. The games are wicked and I dnt have to worry bout losing my umds or forgetting one!! I love the go!!!

  13. if it had a umd i’d get a go but considering how many umd titles i have and how much less content is available online i won’t be buying a umdless psp for a while.
it’s a nice machine and all, i like the way you can use a sixaxis to control it but i just can’t get past the lack of umd.
reminds me, i’m going to have to get a bigger memory stick once that comic book store opens :)

  14. £150?

I’m just about 2 and a half grand short then!

  15. They added Powerstone Collection to the download store the other week so it’s certainly getting more and more attractive. If the 3000 had the bluetooth for DualShock play it would make harder to choose again. I have an originak DS in the meantime though, no rush.
