Sony have just let us know that if you’re still to dive into the PlayStation Network Video Delivery Service and can’t face the prospect of Mary Poppins’ annual televisual outing, you can now download selected horror films for a penny under a quid.  Until the 23rd of December you can rent Candyman II: Farewell to the Flesh, Evil Behind You and Poltergeist III for just 99p.

Spooky.

  1. Nice! Never heard of them but I’ll be sure to look them up on IMDB and invest!

    • Never heard of Candyman or Poltergeist? :o :o :o

      • Ermmm. Maybe heard about Poltergeist but not a horror fan :P

      • To be fair they are the bad sequels to classic horror films

      • I would have spent 99p if it was the original Poltergeist. It’s def a classic.

  2. Giving a discount on horror movies for Christmas instead of… Christmas movies?

    • Christmas movies will sell anyway. Hence discounting films that won’t.

    • Some people do not like Christmas movies and TV what better way to escape the Christmas crap with a cheap horror fest. Love it.

  3. Candyman.. Candyman.. CANDYMAN!

    • Oh no you didn’t!

      • Oh yes he did…

        He’s behind you!!!

(Well, it is panto season! ;) )

    • I hope you weren’t looking in the mirror. Not cos of the candyman, just cos you is ugly :)

  4. This is no discount. These films are so bad I’d want someone to give me a pound to waste my time watching them. And I like horror.

    • Yeah, it’s a shame – I don’t understand SCEE don’t bite the bullet and make a decent selection of films 99p, if only for a week. I’m intrigued by the video service and what the quality is like etc, but I’m not going to take a punt on a £3.50-£5.00 download of a new film. However, if I watched a film I liked for 99p, I’d be more tempted to try it in the future when a full price film comes out that I’m interested in renting because I will know what to expect.

Either that or just offer them for a silly low price like 1p, then you wouldn’t mind if it was a cr*p film or not, Virgin Media often do this on their Pay Per View Movie Service, and the only reason they do it is to show users how good the service is and reel them in to using it in the future when the 1p offer has ended…

      • The problem there is you are applying logic and sound business acumen, thats not how SCEE roll i’m afraid

  5. Sweet. Cheap as chips.

    • well if you fancy a small portion then yes cheap as

      • i’d rather have a small portion than any of those, lol

      • I prefer large portions.

  6. Offers are great, thanks Sony

However you show a startling lack of knowledge of how to make money… Surely kids movies during the school holidays would work better, and maybe even the odd Christmas movie… maybe a different one ever 24 hrs in the run up to Christmas.

    • They will sell anyway, so making them 99p is probably only going to reduce their revenue.

  7. But hasnt the download service got a bad rep? Most people say it takes ages to d/l a movie.

    • Good point, the idea of having cheap movies to show people how good the service is, only really works if the service IS good!

    • Hmmm… not here, I downloaded Moon as an HD rental on Saturday, just to try out the service and it took me 3 hours. Not bad at all.

      • That’s great for you, but I wish it was the same for me. I’m too scared to try again after my epic 16-hour wait for 50% of the film to download.

  8. What I wonder is, has anyone used it more than once… Everybody I know who’s touched it would never use it again, because it takes the best part of the day to download anything, and its much much dearer than almost every single alternative

    • How are they ever gonna combat piracy if it’s easier and faster to download a movie illegally than it is through a service like this! Sort it out Sony

    • Well lets face it if you have PSN you have internet.Who would pay to watch a movie slowly when they can watch it quicker for free online. If they had a decent asian horror movie section i would use it.I get a bit tired of pixellated screens and out of sync subs.

      • Tartan Asia Extreme FTW

      • tartans selection is a bit limited.I own most of them.Check out Asian-Horror-Movies.com.Its a great site.

    • I used it for a 2nd time last week to watch the new Harry Potter (Hadn’t seen it in the pictures, letterbox is too small for Lovefilm, no Blockbusters nearby). In SD the film took about 3 1/2 hours to download, and once I discovered that as long as you don’t play Online you can still download whilst playing games there wasn’t a problem.

Watched it twice for £4, cheaper than the pictures and as a legal way of watching films I thought it wasn’t bad at all. I will definitely be using the Video store again, although (on topic) there’s a definite case for making any film more than (say) 5 years old about a quid to rent since you can buy them on DVD for not much more – or as I mostly do, wait for stuff to come on normal telly!

      • How can your letterbox be too small for LoveFilm?

  9. Awww. I thought you ment you could purchase them for 99p!
I guess it was always too good to be true though. :(

  10. Jesus wept (it is nearly his birthday) those films are f’ing Terry Blair!!

  11. Now, if only it was out in Ireland. I still love Blu-Ray thought and wouldn’t be throwing that format away, but it would be great to just be able to browse movies when I’m bored and pick one for the night.

  12. Never heard of these films but good stuff..

  13. Rather pay for some decent anime series! :)

  14. The first film I rented from the store was about a day after its launch, Mall Cop. It took like a week to get to 60% so I cancelled it.
I found out about this 99p offer Friday night, and downloaded Evil Behind You, and it took an hour and a half to download the film in its entirety – Not bad!
Shame I can’t say the same for the film, the film was terrible.

    • A week to get to 60%?Maybe youku are running things for Sony.
