This is a follow up to Lewis’ post that listed the options for a premium PSN service. Amidst all the reactions was some confusion about what the different premium features, such as Trophy Alerts, were. Now thanks to Engadget here is the list. The table from the earlier post is included again at the end.

Your argument makes no sense. Yes, I am aware of the concept known as “Saving Money” but if saving 75p a week is going to make a big difference to a persons financial situation I would suggest they have a lot more to worry about than gaming and the price of a PSN subscription.

Some good features here, but why cant everyone just have them for free? The selling point for me was that there were no additional costs, and i reckon this will put off many potential customers, as they will just get the much cheaper 360.

The much cheaper 360 which costs twice as much when you factor in the cost of live,wireless,blu ray player etc.

i hate the idea of this – My view of Xbox Live was that you buy a console, and then choose to either get the poor silver offering, or pay for options that really should be included in a single package for everyone.
I have sung praises about the psn to friends looking at getting a console, and now it seems that Sony are going the same way as MS, segregating their customer base. If they decide to charge then fine, it will simply improve the service, but i wish they would just charge everyone a flat amount for all of the features on offer.
Just to moan a bit…
Customer Service Priority Access – Ha! I have spent time on the phone to Sony saying their shoddy hardware is no longer working, and of course I had to pay for the privilege anyway. Asking me to pay extra so i can get nowhere faster isn’t very appealing.
Early Access to Store content – i’d rather wait for a week than pay for this
I could go on but i’m boring myself already

EU already has music video service, and some countries have a catchup TV offering (although as far as I’m aware it’s only one provider in each country, from the multitude on offer)
So there will be some differences

Aside from the yes and no’s people already mentioned, I really disagree with the Menber only in-game content. If i pay for a game I really expect to be able to play all of it unless of course its DLC.

Has it not occurred to anyone that Sony aren’t actually charging you for access to these things. Its common knowledge that Sony make a $40 dollar loss on every slim sold, what they are charging for is their poor business decision made 3-4 years ago during the development of the PS3 which has caused them to lose money hand over foot.
I honestly can’t see how this is being embraced, its the PS3 equivalent of the Poll Tax in my opinion

@BC
I can’t see a problem with it , as you probably know.
I hope the vocal minority moaning about it means Sony launch a halfway house service which is neither here nor there.
I also can’t see why anyone has a problem with it, things like playing online, psn messaging, chatrooms, in-game chat, iPlayer, Vidzone and every single thing else will remain free, forever! – Everything else is EXTRA, its not taking a single thing away from the standard service
This is purely for people who want more – if you’re not one of the people who want more, then I don’t think that should affect people who are willing to pay for more benefits, especially one’s as good value as these.
@joe
I think you need to moderate your tone!

Thank you CC_Star for pointing that out, a little less of the personal insults would be welcomed just because I disagree, second time it has happened this week. What is going on at this place recently

I like the fact we can still play online for free if we choose to, but there are definatly some features in there that I guess I would pay for, although it would be with resent, since when I bought my PS3 it was with the intent that it would remain free, this was widley advertised and was the main reason for not buying an Xbox for me.
But I can say that subscription has done alot of good for the 360 and because people are choosing to pay for it, they arn’t willing to do much that would get them banned etc so it gets rid of alot of nonsense, so there are pro’s and cons to a subscription based service. I guess we will have to see how it all pans out if it does turn out to be true, there will have to be a lot of backend changes to make it worth while. The playstation Store downloads are still to slow and I got 20meg BB, Game updates are to slow, we (the uk) have to wait much longer than other regions to get certain content, will that be quicker if we subscribe? etc etc

One thing that I think is stupid is that the two lower price account options have different things that the premium ones dont. Such as Token Wagering. Surely the highest price should have every feature, then lower to three quaters, then to a half and maybe even a quater. I would be willing to pay for these awesome features if there was a complete option (everything in one)

I don’t think I’ll pay, the actual features are enough for me. …Still I’d like to have the cross-game chat.

Collectively this is an amazing bunch of stuff. Start watering it down either through what is actually cost effective (and then the usual SCEE factor) though and you start to look at them in much more detail and thinking, “hang on, this is something that actually puts me off playing (lack of automatic patches is my bug bear), why do I have to pay extra for something that other services (such as Steam) do without hassle)?”
I know there is the argument that Sony don’t owe you anything once you’ve bought the machine and unless there was a written contract between you (and what EULA says it will actually give you extra stuff?) – no they don’t legally owe you. But they need your loyalty which should not be confused with fanboyism. Brand loyalty is a very real thing in all of us which affects all of us whether you like it or not.
e.g. Me. An important question for Sony at the moment is will my next console and subsequent several years of game, video, sub purchases etc be with Sony or MS? Sony need to provide me with a user experience that starts influencing my future buying decisions now and my perception of the services offered by both companies NOW will affect my buying decisions for at least a decade. It’s why I got a PS3, I loved my PS2 and Xbox just didn’t seem that impressive.
But this generation things have changed and now both companies are offering great (and similar) services. I only have one console (due to time and money) but I often look at the 360 with green eyes.
The grass is always greener on the other side to begin with and then add on other factors and odd decisions by Sony and I can say they’ve currently lost my brand loyalty. MS haven’t secured it yet and I’m not going waste money buying a new console of this generation. Price comparison of subs, wireless cards etc on sites like this are all well and good but perceived quality by the general public is much more important and MS are VERY good at it.
So at the moment I’m in the middle, Sony are currently one sale down on the next generation before they’ve even built it. No mad claims here of “and I bet I’m not the only one!”. Thats what marketing and industry analysts get paid for, just showing why after sales support has to be done right (but still cost effectively of course!).

not a good or bad idea. if they want to charge people a subscription, the servers needs to be much better to stop crashes and glitching. As for customer service calls aren’t we al customers of sony, we all bought a ps3, so should all be entitled to the same level and care of customer service. for the 50 pound price tag i would expect some sort of a movie download agreement like 3 films a month, if not then at least the option to buy a further subscription maybe ten pounds a month for a movie subscription at 3 to 5 films a month at the users choice. To be honest i understand sony wanting us to pay for the servers but they are now trying to charge for items that as a company they should be providing to all there consumers in the first place. I think microsoft got the xbox live right but sony are way off on there offers, come on sony give your customers what they want not your offers that should already be free or that your penalising customers for if they don’t subscribe!
